Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) that leave positive tumor margins after excision have a higher chance of recurring, making complete removal crucial during treatment.
The study assessed the reliability of the Whole Specimen Intraoperative Frozen Section Analysis (WIFSA) technique by comparing it to the standard postoperative analysis in over a thousand BCC cases and tracking recurrence rates for up to 10 years.
Results showed that WIFSA had a 98.8% agreement with postoperative analysis and a low recurrence rate of 2.1% in BCCs with a tumor-free margin after an average follow-up of 5.6 years.
