Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate 'intactness scores': the remaining proportion of an 'intact' reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region's major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to construct an algorithm to regionalize the site of origin of NPVTs using only intracardiac bipolar electrograms from 2 linear decapolar catheters positioned in the posterolateral right atrium (along the crista terminalis with the distal bipole pair in the superior vena cava) and in the proximal coronary sinus (CS).
Forensic medical practitioners are in a unique position as they observe the exact pathology of various diseases in thousands of autopsies performed each year. Most medico-legal autopsies reveal an underlying, natural disease as the cause of death. Such data, relayed to the various stakeholders in the public health sector (including clinical medical practitioners), contribute to determining the population health status as well as identifying and dealing with priority areas.

Vervet monkeys () are considered pests by farmers and homeowners. Consequent attempts to exterminate problem adult vervet monkeys often result in orphaned young offspring, which are sometimes taken to wildlife rehabilitation centers. We assessed the success of a novel fostering program at the Vervet Monkey Foundation, South Africa.

To explain these differences, we analyzed long-term time trends in the incidence of the most common histological subtypes of CM: superficial spreading melanoma (SSM), lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM), and nodular melanoma (NM).
Methods: Using data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry and Statistics Netherlands, the number and rates of cases diagnosed with SSM, LLM, and NM from 1989 to 2016 were analyzed by age, calendar period, and birth cohort of people born in successive periods from 1925 to 1973.
A phase 1b, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multiple ascending dose study (NCT02858973) was conducted to assess the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of the new antituberculosis agent telacebec (Q203). A total of 47 healthy adult subjects entered the study; 36 received telacebec, and 11 received placebo. Telacebec at doses of 20, 50, 100, 160, 250, and 320 mg was orally administered once daily with a standard meal for 14 days.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe death of a young person is most often a tragic occurrence, more so when this death was unexpected. Forensic pathologists are mandated to investigate such deaths, and there has been a strong move internationally towards genetic testing as an additional investigative tool. The aim of our article is to bring the advantage of implementing the so-called molecular autopsy in a local setting to the attention of medical practitioners.

It is common for the cause of many such infant deaths to remain unexplained even after a full medico-legal death investigation, and then to be categorised as a sudden unexplained infant death (SUID). Fortunately, advances in molecular-based diagnostics allow researchers to identify numerous underlying inherited cardiac arrhythmogenic disorders in many SUDI cases, with a predominance of variants identified in the gene.

Unfortunately, the use of tissue samples for molecular diagnostic applications is challenging; thus, the forensic pathology FFPE tissue archives in Africa have been a largely unexploited genetic resource, with the usability of DNA obtainable from these samples being unknown.
Intervention: The study, conducted from January 2015 to August 2016, determined the usefulness of FFPE tissue as a reliable source of genetic material for successful post-mortem molecular applications and diagnostics.

Child sun protection has recently been linked to the future disappearance of fatal melanoma in adults in successive generations. In the Netherlands, however, mortality rates from melanoma have increased gradually from the 1950s, with some indication of stabilisation since 2010, which may be compatible with a birth cohort effect by sun-protective measures and screening. To study the trajectories ahead a trend analysis was applied.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the safety and feasibility of PDL closure after LAAO.
Objectives: This study sought to report the incidence of device-related thrombosis (DRT) and thromboembolic (TE) events when an alternative to clopidogrel is prescribed in loss-of-function (LOF) allele carriers of the cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) gene.
Background: LOF polymorphisms of the CYP2C19 gene are associated with reduced hepatic bioactivation of clopidogrel.
Methods: A total of 1,002 Watchman patients were included.
Coxiellosis, or Query (Q) fever, a disease caused by the intracellular bacteria , was recently described in a managed breeding herd of white rhinoceros () in the southeastern United States. Clinical disease often results in abortion and could represent a conservation challenge for this species. In addition to the reproductive and herd management consequences, coxiellosis is also a zoonotic disease.

Background: Interventional therapies aiming at excluding the left atrial appendage (LAA) from systemic circulation have been established as a valid alternative to oral anticoagulation in patients at high thromboembolic risk. However, their efficacy on stroke prophylaxis may be compromised owing to incomplete LAA closure. Additionally, the need for an alternative thromboembolic prevention may remain unmet in patients with contraindications to oral anticoagulation whose appendage anatomy is unsuitable for some conventional devices commercially available.

NCDs are predicted to surpass infections like human immunodeficiency virus, tuberculosis and malaria as the leading cause of mortality in SSA over the next decade. Heart failure (HF) is the dominant form of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and a leading cause of NCD in SSA.

Methods: In an open-label, single-group study in which follow-up is ongoing at three South African sites, we investigated treatment with three oral drugs - bedaquiline, pretomanid, and linezolid - that have bactericidal activity against tuberculosis and to which there is little preexisting resistance. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of the drug combination for 26 weeks in patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis and patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis that was not responsive to treatment or for which a second-line regimen had been discontinued because of side effects.
