spp. are ubiquitous molds that cause a wide range of clinical syndromes depending on the immune status of the host. Herein, we present a case of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis on long-term immunosuppressive medications, with a persistent dry cough and left-sided chest pain for over a year, who presented with acute sternal drainage.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world, and accounts for more solid tumor deaths than any other carcinomas. The prognostic values of , , and p53-loss are unknown in lung cancer. We have conducted survival analyses of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients from the University of Minnesota VA hospital and those from the Wake Forest University Hospital.

This essential-for-survival signal demonstrates elevated expression and activity in all cancers examined, and is considered an attractive target for cancer therapy. Here, we present data on the efficacy of a tenfibgen (TBG) coated nanocapsule which delivers its cargo of siRNA (siCK2) or single stranded RNA/DNA oligomers (RNAi-CK2) simultaneously targeting CK2α and α' catalytic subunits.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCK2 is a master regulator protein kinase which demonstrates heightened expression in diverse cancer types and is considered a promising target for therapy. Given its ubiquitous expression and potent influence on cell survival, cancer cell-directed targeting of the CK2 signal is an important factor for development of an anti-CK2 therapeutic. We previously reported on the malignant cell specificity and effect on CK2 signaling of a tenfibgen (TBG) based nanocapsule for delivery of the CK2 small molecule inhibitor 2-dimethylamino-4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-1-benzimidazole (DMAT) in cultured prostate cancer cells.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is coactivated by the μ-opioid receptor (MOR), expressed on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and human lung cancer. We hypothesized that clinically used opioid analgesics that are MOR agonists coactivate EGFR, resulting in growth- and survival-promoting signaling.
Methods: We used H2009, a human adenocarcinoma NSCLC cell line, with constitutive EGFR phosphorylation, which showed increased expression of MOR and the δ-opioid receptor by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.
Aim: To determine the cellular location and expression of MUC17 mucin in specimens of normal, inflamed and neoplastic colon.
Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of human surgical resection specimens (n=106) was performed with a specific antibody to the MUC17 apomucin protein. A semi-quantitative scoring system was used to measure MUC17 expression.
In contrast to primary gastric adenocarcinomas, germ cell tumors are potentially curable even when metastatic. It is therefore essential for clinicians and pathologists to be aware of the spectrum of unusual manifestations of germ cell malignancies. Here we report on a 55-year-old man who presented with clinical and endoscopic features indicative of a primary gastric carcinoma.

Two weeks after one oral dose of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) at 65 mg/kg body weight, female Sprague-Dawley rats started treatment with TAM (10 microg/rat) by subcutaneous injection, I3C (250 mg/kg body weight) by oral gavage, TAM+I3C or their respective vehicles three times per week, for up to 20 weeks. Significant increases in the median latency of malignant mammary tumors and decreases in the mean tumor mass per rat were due to TAM.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFT cells use the vascular adhesion molecules E- and P-selectin to enter inflamed skin. Previous studies have indicated the possibility for diversity in the synthesis of E- and P-selectin glycan ligands by activated T cells due to their different requirements for the O-glycan branching enzyme core 2 beta1,6-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I and its independent regulation. It is known that T cell staining by the mAb HECA-452 (referred to as cutaneous lymphocyte-associated Ag (CLA) T cells) correlates with E-selectin binding, yet whether these cells uniformly bind P-selectin is less clear.

Experimental Design: Eligible patients had unresectable pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma, measurable disease, no prior therapy, and performance status 0-1 by Cancer and Leukemia Group B criteria. Gefitinib (500 mg p.
Purpose: Reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) assays for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have been described to identify lymph node micrometastases. These assays are not quantitative and can be confounded by false-positive results. The purpose of this study was to determine whether quantification of CEA in lymph nodes could more readily identify clinically relevant groups.

The BMP3B promoter sequence was previously identified as a target for aberrant DNA methylation in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Aberrant DNA hypermethylation in the BMP3B promoter is associated with downregulation of BMP3B transcription in both primary human lung cancers as well as lung cancer cell lines.

A secondary objective was to assess the impact of comorbid illnesses on survival.

The MUC2 mucin gene is highly expressed in the colon and associated colorectal tumors and may be a candidate marker for colorectal cancer micrometastases. We have used RT-PCR to detect expression of MUC2 mRNA transcripts in order to identify possible lymph node micrometastases in node negative (Stage I and II, or Dukes A and B) colorectal cancer patients.
