Rapeseed, strawberry and raspberry seed oils are a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants such as tocols, bioflavonoids and phytosterols. The aim of the study was to determine changes in the blood lipid profile of rats fed with rapeseed, strawberry and raspberry seed oils and their effects on selected parameters of oxidative status. The experiment was carried out on male Wistar rats.

Protective effect of zinc on cadmium embryotoxicity and antioxidant status of blood plasma in newly hatched chicks.

Among the multiple mechanisms of cadmium toxicity proposed, the most common is the disruption of the cellular antioxidant system, which may be limited by pre- or co-treatment with zinc. The aim of this study was to determine if simultaneous zinc supplementation of hen's egg could reduce embryotoxic effect of cadmium. Egg albumen was injected on day 4 of incubation with cadmium alone (50 nmol per egg) or in combination with zinc (100 and 500 nmol).

Effect of cadmium injected in ovo on hatching results and the activity of plasma hydrolytic enzymes in newly hatched chicks.

The aim of the study was to determine the toxicity of cadmium ions in chick embryos, using plasma hydrolytic enzyme as its biomarker. Hatching eggs (n = 300) from Ross 308 broilers were incubated under standard conditions. On day 4 of incubation, 50 μl of saline solution, containing Cd ions at a concentration from 0 (control group) to 24 μg, was injected in ovo into the egg albumen.

Effect of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on steroid concentrations in blood and gonads of chicken embryo.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) injected at the early stage of incubation on hormonal activity of the chicken ovary and testis during the second half of embryogenesis measured by steroid concentrations in blood plasma and gonads. Adsorption of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) on multiwalled carbon nanotubes-silicate film: application to bioelectrocatalytic dioxygen reduction.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were entrapped in sol-gel processed hydrophilic silicate thin film on tin-doped indium oxide support. Microscopic images show that the nanotubes form large agglomerates of largely separated nanotubes covered by silicate film. The measurements of capacitive current prove that approximately 10% of them remain electrochemically active.

Ion transfer processes at ionic liquid based redox active drop deposited on an electrode surface.

Ion transfer across the boundary formed at an ionic liquid drop deposited on an electrode immersed in aqueous solution, generated by electrochemical redox reaction at the electrode-ionic liquid interface, is studied to obtain information about the ability of anions to be transferred into a room temperature ionic liquid.

Hydrophobic silica sol-gel films for biphasic electrodes and porotrodes.

Hydrophobic sol-gel films from methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) are deposited onto glass and tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates. Uniform and microporous films of ca. 200 nm thickness are obtained and investigated by scanning electron microscopy and by electrochemical techniques.

[Intramedullary osteosynthesis for treatment of pseudarthrosis].

The main causes of long bone fractures healing complications are: insufficient vascularisation of the bone fragments and excessive movement in the fracture site. Intramedullary osteosynthesis preceded by intramedullary reaming (internal decortication) ensure refreshing of the bone ends and a good mechanical stabilisation in cases with pseudoarthroses. Long bone fractures healing complications occurring during either conservative or operative treatment can be treated using this method.

[Selected aspects of treatment of trochanteric fractures by the Ender method].

Basing on the 963 patients treated for trochanteric fractures with Ender nailing in the years 1974-1995, some remarks concerning operational technic and complications have been presented. Among the injured there were 641 females--average 75 y and 322 men--average 71 y. Two fractures of metaphysis occurred during the operation procedure treated successfully with plastic splint.

[Osteosynthesis with elastic nailing for treatment of tibial fracture].

Results of treatment of 163 tibial fractures in 47 females and 116 males aged 15-76 operated with closed elastic intramedullary osteosynthesis are presented. A bundle of universal intramedullary nails preshaped depending on fracture pattern served for osteosynthesis in 144 closed fractures, 18 open fractures of first degree and 1 second degree open fracture. In all cases but one fracture healed.

[Epidemiology of proximal femur fracture and results of therapy in patients treated at the Orthopedic-Trauma Ward of the Railway Hospital in Warsaw in the years 1986-1990].

A retrospective analysis included 441 hospitalized patients with fractures of the proximal femoral bone, treated at the orthopedic-traumatology ward in 1986-1990. Such patients constituted 9.12% of all patients treated during those years.

[Intramedullary osteosynthesis of tibial shaft fractures].

Thirty seven patients with fracture of tibia were treated by closed method intramedullary osteosynthesis with Küntscher nail (22 cases) and with elastic rods designed by the authors. Complete bony union was achieved on average after 30 and 47 weeks in fresh and old fractures respectively. There was 1 case of mild osteitis after second osteosynthesis and 1 patient with multiple trauma has died.

[Treatment of the Achilles tendon rupture by the Ma and Griffith method].

The method has been presented and the results in 13 patients have been given. The results have been compared with those obtained in 8 patients treated by the open method. A more favorable evaluation has been achieved by the patients treated by the closed method.
