Microscopic satellite metastases are an adverse prognostic feature in primary cutaneous melanoma patients. The prognostic significance of microsatellites, including their number, size and distance from the primary melanoma, using the 8th edition American Joint Committee on Cancer definition, has not previously been evaluated. This study sought to determine the prognostic significance of microsatellites in histopathologically reviewed cases.

Although surgery is the mainstay in common practice, recent literature is reporting a more conservative approach. We compared the local control rate for surgery, surgery with radiotherapy, radiotherapy alone and a wait and see policy in a systematic review.

The aim of our study was to systematically review different SLNB techniques and perform a meta-analysis for corresponding identification and false-negative rates.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature on SLNB in patients with early stage breast carcinoma and melanoma was performed.
Background: Patients with palpable melanoma groin metastases have a poor prognosis. There is debate whether a combined superficial and deep groin dissection (CGD) is necessary or if superficial groin dissection (SGD) alone is sufficient.
Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze risk factors for deep pelvic nodal involvement in a retrospective, multicenter cohort of palpable groin melanoma metastases.
Background: In order to define patients eligible for only a superficial groin dissection or a combined superficial and deep groin dissection, this study aimed to determine the incidence of deep lymph node metastases (LNM) in patients with melanoma metastasized to the groin, to identify patient and melanoma factors that predict deep nodal involvement, and to analyze the impact of deep nodal involvement on survival and recurrence.
Methods: Patients who underwent a combined superficial (inguinal) and deep (iliac and obturator) complete (CLND) or therapeutic lymph node dissection (TLND) of the groin between 1994 and 2012 were analyzed.
Results: QueryDeep LNM were found in 8 of 62 CLND patients (13 %) and in 21 of 67 TLND patients (31 %).
Background: In the US, whether a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is performed depends on tumor and patient factors, including socioeconomic status (SES) and type of health care insurance. We analyzed which patient and tumor characteristics influenced the use of SLNB in a country where every patient has equal access to healthcare.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with a cutaneous invasive melanoma of ≥1 mm between 2004 and 2011 and living in the northeastern part of the Netherlands were selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry.
Background: Pathologists sometimes disagree on the diagnosis of melanoma or its histopathologic staging, which may have implications for treatment and follow-up. For this reason, melanoma patients referred to Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) for further treatment routinely have their pathology slides reviewed by MIA pathologists. This study sought to determine whether diagnosis, staging, and treatment of melanoma patients changed significantly after central pathology review.

In a plane Couette cell a thin fluid layer consisting of water is sheared between the sides of a transparent band at Reynolds numbers ranging from 300 to 1400. The length of the cell's flow channel is large compared to the film separation. To extract the flow velocity in the experiments, a correlation image velocimetry method is used on pictures recorded with a high-speed camera.

This study sought to assess and compare the precision, reproducibility, and completeness of external pathology reports and pathology reports generated by central review of each case in a large cohort of primary cutaneous melanoma patients.
Methods: Details of matched external pathology reports and corresponding review reports for 4,924 primary cutaneous invasive melanomas diagnosed and treated at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) between 2001 and 2011 were analyzed.
Background: Combined whole-body FDG-PET and CT provide the most comprehensive staging of melanoma patients with palpable lymph node metastases (LNM). The aim of this study is to analyze survival of FDG-PET and CT negative or positive melanoma patients and to assess which factors have independent prognostic impact on survival of these patients.
Methods: Patients with palpable and histologically or cytologically proven LNM of melanoma, referred to participating hospitals for examination with FDG-PET and CT, were selected from a previous study.
Background: Diverticulitis can be complicated by a colovesical fistula (CVF). This phenomenon is relatively uncommon in surgical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate diagnostic and surgical management of CVF at our medical centre.

A transition in hydraulically induced granular displacement patterns is studied by means of discrete numerical molecular dynamics simulations. During this transition the patterns change from fractures and fingers to finely dispersed bubbles. The dynamics of the displacement patterns are studied in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell filled with a dense but permeable two-dimensional granular layer.

Case Description: A 42-year-old woman was referred to the emergency department with symptoms indicative of obstructive icterus.

The effect of an interstitial fluid on the mixing of sedimenting grains is studied numerically in a closed rectangular Hele-Shaw cell. We investigate the impact of the fluid compressibility and fluid viscosity on the dynamics and structures of the granular Rayleigh-Taylor instability. First we discuss the effect of the fluid compressibility on the initial fluid pressure evolution and on the dynamics of the particles.

We analyze the granular Rayleigh-Taylor instability of densely packed grains immersed in a compressible or an incompressible fluid using numerical simulations and two types of experiments. The simulations are based on a two-dimensional (2D) molecular dynamics model and the experiments have been carried out in systems of grains immersed in water/glycerol (incompressible fluid) and in air (compressible fluid). The variation of the interstitial fluid is shown to generate different dynamical patterns and mixing properties of the granular systems.

Patient surveys show that many patients want broad information about their disease and treatment. Often they are interested to participate in the process of medical decision making, which could be realised with the concept of shared decision making where patient's values and needs are considered to the same extent as the treatment recommendations of evidence-based medicine. In depression care, it has been demonstrated so far that the active involvement of patients contributes to higher motivation for treatment.
