Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) eradication on the long-term clinical course of functional dyspepsia (FD) over a 7-year follow-up period.
  • Among 1685 screened patients, 211 with FD were Hp-positive, and patients were monitored with a structured symptom questionnaire to assess improvements in three FD symptom clusters (ulcer-like, dismotility-like, and reflux-like).
  • Results showed that while there was slight improvement in symptoms post-eradication, only a small percentage of patients remained symptom-free long-term, indicating a tendency for FD symptoms to recur.

During a whole year (July 1, 2001-June 30, 2002) the cases found were 591. We demonstrated that the problem concerns mainly elderly patients, almost equally distributed between males and females, a quarter of the sample being represented by patients who had recently undergone surgery and whose discharge difficulties were mostly related to mixed social and sanitary problems.
