Background: Racial and ethnic disparities have been reported for HCC prognosis, although few studies fully account for clinically important factors and social determinants of health, including neighborhood socioeconomic status.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study of patients newly diagnosed with HCC from January 2010 through August 2018 at 4 large health systems in the United States. We used multivariable logistic regression and cause-specific Cox proportional hazard models to identify factors associated with early-stage HCC presentation and overall survival.
Purpose: MRI is a potential alternative to ultrasound for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection. We evaluated the impact of ultrasound and dynamic abbreviated MRI (AMRI) exam quality on early-stage HCC detection.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter case-control study among patients with cirrhosis (cases with early-stage HCC per Milan Criteria; controls without HCC) who underwent both a liver ultrasound and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) AMRI within 6 months in 2012-2019.
Background & Aims: Guidelines recommend that sub-centimeter nodules on ultrasound be followed with short-interval surveillance ultrasound, given assumed low risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and suboptimal diagnostic imaging performance in lesions <1 cm. We performed a systematic review to estimate HCC risk among patients with cirrhosis and sub-centimeter nodules detected on ultrasound.
Methods: We systematically searched Ovid MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for relevant articles published between January 2005 and July 2024.
Background: Residence in ethnic enclaves and nativity are both associated with survival in Hispanic patients with cancer, although their prognostic significance in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unknown. We aimed to determine the association between nativity, neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES), and ethnic enclave residency with overall survival in Hispanic patients with HCC.
Methods: Hispanic patients diagnosed with HCC from 2004 to 2017 were identified in the Texas Cancer Registry.
Introduction: Test results are immediately released to patients through patient portals. We characterized patient and provider time-to-review of liver imaging results.
Methods: We identified 401 patients with cirrhosis enrolled in the portal with ≥1 liver imaging.

Racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities exist in the prevalence and natural history of chronic liver disease, access to care, and clinical outcomes. Solutions to improve health equity range widely, from digital health tools to policy changes. The current review outlines the disparities along the chronic liver disease health care continuum from screening and diagnosis to the management of cirrhosis and considerations of pre-liver and post-liver transplantation.

It consists of compensated, decompensated, and further decompensated stages; median survival is more than 15 years, 2 years, and 9 months for each stage, respectively. With each stage, there is progressive worsening of portal hypertension and the vasodilatory-hyperdynamic circulatory state, resulting in a progressive decrease in effective arterial blood volume and renal perfusion.

Globally, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related death and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. The predominant cause of HCC is shifting from viral to nonviral causes, in parallel with the high global prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and increasing alcohol consumption in many countries. There have been promising recent advances in the treatment of all stages of HCC; however, improvements in early detection, increased utilization of HCC surveillance, and equitable access to HCC therapies are needed to curb increases in HCC mortality.

Recent deceased-donor allocation changes in the United States may have increased high-Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT); however, outcomes in these patients remain poorly defined. As the incidence of ALD increases, we aimed to characterize recent trends in ALD LT frequency and outcomes, including racial and ethnic disparities.
Methods: Using United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network data (2015 through 2021), we evaluated LT frequency, waitlist mortality, and graft survival among US adults with ALD (alcohol-associated hepatitis [AH] and alcohol-associated cirrhosis [AAC]) stratified by race and ethnicity.
Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis and post-treatment monitoring of primary liver cancers. Clear, consistent, and actionable communication of imaging results is crucial to avoid miscommunication and potential detrimental impact on patient care. In this review, we discuss the importance, advantages, and potential impact of universal adoption of standardized terminology and interpretive criteria for liver imaging, from the point of view of radiologists and clinicians.
