Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is increasingly used to investigate mechanisms of brain functions and plasticity, but also as a promising new therapeutic tool. The effects of rTMS depend on the intensity and frequency of stimulation and consist of changes of cortical excitability, which often persists several minutes after termination of rTMS. While these findings imply that cortical processing can be altered by applying current pulses from outside the brain, little is known about how rTMS persistently affects learning and perception.

We report on a case of a 54-year-old man who was admitted to hospital with diffuse muscular pain and recurrent vomiting. Diagnosis of an adenocarcinoma of the esophagus was established by endosonography-guided biopsy. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple nodular lesions within the skeletal musculature; CT-guided biopsy proved the metastatic origin of the primary tumor site.

We report about a male 50-year-old patient with known non-small cell lung cancer and tumor-associated stenosis of the right main bronchus already treated with Neodym-YAG-laser coagulation. Eight months later the patient was readmitted to hospital and revealed complete occlusion of the right main bronchus and subtotal stenosis of the distal trachea and the left main bronchus. Conventional tracheobronchoscopy failed to visualize the post-stenotic parts of the left main bronchus due to the length and degree of stenosis.

Nano-and microparticles of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were formulated using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose (HMHEC) or polyethyleneimine (PEI) as stabilizers. The uptake by murine Peyer's patches (PPs) and the binding to Peyer's patches-free tissue (PPFT) of these particles was investigated using fluorescence microscopy providing qualitative information about the tissue distribution of particles. Observations of intestinal cryo-sections showed significant discrimination in the uptake by PP of nano-and microparticles.

Poly(MePEG2000cyanoacrylate-co-hexadecylcyanoacrylate) (PEG-PHDCA) nanoparticles have demonstrated their capacity to reach the rat central nervous system after intravenous injection. For insight into the transport of colloidal systems across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we developed a relevant in vitro rat BBB model consisting of a coculture of rat brain endothelial cells (RBECs) and rat astrocytes. The RBECs used in our model displayed and retained structural characteristics of brain endothelial cells, such as expression of P-glycoprotein, occludin and ZO-1, and immunofluorescence studies showed the specific localization of occludin and ZO1.

Patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and intractable pain showed a shrinkage of cortical maps on primary (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) contralateral to the affected limb. This was paralleled by an impairment of the two-point discrimination thresholds. Behavioral treatment over 1 to 6 months consisting of graded sensorimotor retuning led to a persistent decrease in pain intensity, which was accompanied by a restoration of the impaired tactile discrimination and regaining of cortical map size in contralateral SI and SII.

We undertook a study of the mechanism by which Dr-positive bacteria invade epithelial cells. Our findings show that Dr-positive bacteria enter via a zipper-like mechanism that is independent of the Dr-induced mobilization of F-actin and of the signaling molecules that control Dr-induced F-actin rearrangements. We also observed that Dr-positive IH11128 bacteria entered cells that were positive for the caveola marker VIP21/caveolin (HeLa and Caco-2/Cav-1 cells) to the same extent as those that were not (parental Caco-2 cells).

Dual oxidase 2 (Duox2) is a cell surface glycoprotein that probably provides thyroperoxidase with the H2O2 required to catalyze thyroid hormone synthesis. No functional H2O2-generating system has yet been obtained after transfecting Duox2 into non-thyroid cell lines, because it is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Purpose: We sought to assess the diagnostic accuracy of routine chest radiography for the acute aortic syndrome (dissection, intramural hematoma, penetrating ulcer, or nondissecting aneurysm).

Methods: During a 6-year period, 216 patients (143 men, 73 women; mean [+/- SD] age, 58 +/- 17 years) underwent chest radiography for suspected acute aortic syndrome. Several studies suggest that the Rh complex represents a major interaction site between the membrane lipid bilayer and the red cell skeleton, but little is known about the molecular basis of this interaction. We report here that ankyrin-R is capable of interacting directly with the C-terminal cytoplasmic domain of Rh and RhAG polypeptides. We first show that the primary defect of ankyrin-R in normoblastosis (nb/nb) spherocytosis mutant mice is associated with a sharp reduction of RhAG and Rh polypeptides.

We investigated three patients with partial cortical blindness after brain injury by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) before and after the application of a daily visual stimulation-therapy over a period of 6 months. Before therapy, fMRI data showed a severely reduced blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal in primary visual cortex when compared to healthy volunteers. Following several months of rehabilitative therapy a neuropsychological improvement of visual functions was accompanied by an increase in BOLD signal of residual perilesional regions whereas fMRI data of the control group remained unchanged.
