[Unusual alcoholic weaning, complicated: do you check the blood phosphate?].

A 65 year old alcoholic man was hospitalized because he was tired, hypotonic, with postural tremor. The neurologic symptoms increased during the first two days despite an adequate therapy for alcoholic weaning with hydratation, benzodiazepines and vitamins. A severe hypophosphatemia is diagnosed, associated with hypovitaminosis D, mild hypomagnesemia, mild hypokaliemia and a refeeding syndrome.

Case report: pseudotendon formation after a type III flexor digitorum profundus avulsion.

Background: Avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon is a common injury to the hand that virtually always requires surgical repair for restoration of normal finger function.

Case Description: We report a case of a Type III flexor digitorum profundus tendon avulsion in which the patient refused surgery yet attained nearly full active ROM and an excellent functional result via the formation of a pseudotendon, as observed on MRI obtained 2.5 years after the initial injury.

Use of medical comorbidities to predict complications after hip fracture surgery in the elderly.

Background: Comorbidities before and complications following hip fracture surgery can impact the return of function. We hypothesized that the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification of medical comorbidities is a useful surrogate variable for the patient's general medical condition and would be a strong predictor of perioperative medical complications following hip fracture surgery.

Methods: A retrospective review of the cases of 197 elderly patients who had undergone operative management of a hip fracture was performed.

Age-dependent recruitment of neutrophils by fetal endothelial cells: implications in scarless wound healing.

Purpose: Fetal dermal wounds heal with minimal inflammation and absent fibrosis. Later in gestation, a transition to adult-like healing with marked inflammation and scarring is observed. Interaction with endothelial cells (ECs) is imperative for leukocyte transmigration, a critical step in the inflammatory cascade.
