Objectives: This qualitative study aimed to develop an understanding of patients' barriers and facilitators of conversations about dentine hypersensitivity (DH) with their dentist.
Methods: The Theoretical Domains Framework shaped the topic guide for 26 participants who were troubled (High H) or not particularly troubled (Low L) by DH. Inductive thematic analysis of anonymised, transcribed, online focus group conversations was undertaken to identify reasons for non-discussion of DH during dental consultations.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence and associated risk indicators for dentine hypersensitivity (DH), erosive tooth wear (ETW), gingival recession (GR), and gingival inflammation (bleeding on probing, BOP), with clinical and questionnaire data from seven European countries.
Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, seven-European country, epidemiological study in systemically healthy adults. Participants completed a questionnaire regarding oral hygiene, diet and lifestyle factors.
Objectives: Dementia patients are challenging to manage dentally. This study determined whether individuals with mild dementia and periodontitis, could be recruited, retained and demonstrate sustained oral health improvements over 2 years following personalised professional periodontitis treatment. The feasibility of same visit cognition measurements was assessed.

Methods: A single-centre, non-randomised, clinical study in healthy adult volunteers. Eligible participants with ≥1 tooth with either a qualifying Schiff score ≥2 following cold air-blast or tactile Yeaple score of ≤20 g were allocated to tactile or air-blast group.
Objectives: To determine whether video-technology oral hygiene advice (OHA) improved clinical plaque and bleeding on probing (BOP) scores in individuals diagnosed with gingivitis, compared to conventional OHA after 3-months.
Methods: This parallel, randomised 2-arm treatment, single-centre study, assessed Turesky Plaque Index (TPI) and BOP at baseline and 3-months in adult participants with mild-moderate gingivitis. Eligible participants with smartphones were randomised at baseline to intervention (tailored video OHA), or control (conventional OHA).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: This systematic review with network meta-analysis synthesises available randomised controlled trials evidence concerning efficacy of self-administered dentifrices for management of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain.
Study Selection: Following systematic review registration (CRD42019154064), three data bases (MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL) were searched to December 2022 for parallel randomised controlled trials conducted in adults diagnosed with DH, using at least two recognised stimuli, assessing the short-term efficacy of home-use dentifrice treatment in reducing pain. Thirty-two studies and 4,638 participants were included.
Introduction: Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are neurodegenerative conditions characterized by incremental deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) and α-synuclein in AD and PD brain, respectively, in relatively conserved patterns. Both are associated with neuroinflammation, with a proposed microbial component for disease initiation and/or progression. Notably, Aβ and α-synuclein have been shown to possess antimicrobial properties.

Methods: Two recent sensitivity trials conducted by the Bristol Dental School Clinical Trials Group are reviewed.
Results: The methodology used was effective to establish efficacy of the products evaluated.
Aims: To determine whether personalised Oral Hygiene Advice (OHA) using an intra-oral-camera (IOC) combined with standard OHA as provided in general dental practice reduces plaque levels after 4 weeks more than the provision of standard OHA.
Materials And Methods: 22 healthy adult participants diagnosed with gingivitis took part in this pilot parallel-designed, randomised, examiner-blind, 2x-treatment, study regarding their home-care oral hygiene habits and attitudes to oral health. An IOC-image was taken and plaque, gingival and bleeding scores were recorded.
Background A new world classification of periodontal diseases and conditions was developed in 2017 and implemented throughout the United Kingdom by the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.Method A retrospective audit was undertaken at Bristol Dental Hospital (BDH) (December 2019 to March 2020) to assess uptake of the new classification in referral letters and its implementation by staff. In total, 75 consecutive new patient referrals seen at BDH were manually searched for diagnosis/classification.

The effect of providing power-brushes was also evaluated.
Materials And Methods: NHS dental practices were cluster-randomised to intervention or control (2:1).
Aims: The survey's aim was to establish which universities and other educational organisations deliver postgraduate and specialist training in Periodontology in the 31 countries who are members of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and to obtain details of how these programmes are organised, funded, regulated and evaluated.
Methods: A questionnaire and covering letter were emailed to all national periodontal societies. The questions were on the name of country, official recognition, training programmes, entry to specialist training, specialist training assessment and recognition after completion of training.
Prior observational studies have reported that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with decreased caries risk in children. However, these studies are prone to bias and confounding so do not provide causal inference. Genetic variants associated with a risk factor of interest can be used as proxies, in a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, to test for causal association with an outcome.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: To determine the efficacy of a cosmetic aluminium lactate/potassium nitrate/hydroxylapatite toothpaste for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain as compared to a control toothpaste containing potassium nitrate.
Methods: The study was a randomised, examiner-blind, two treatment arm, parallel controlled trial in healthy adults with at least 2 sensitive teeth (Schiff >2). At baseline, immediately after treatment and at 7 and 14 days of twice-daily brushing of the test or control toothpaste the sensitivity of 2 test teeth was measured following iced-water (Schiff and VAS) and tactile (Yeaple probe) stimuli, and a whole mouth plaque score was obtained.
Objectives: To determine whether a microneedle patch combined with 5% topical lidocaine reduces dental injection pain more than a patch without microneedles combined with 5% topical lidocaine.
Methods: This proof of principle randomised, two-treatment, double-blind, crossover split-unit design study in 16 healthy participants investigated levels of perceived pain from 3 increasing pain provoking challenges, when topical 5% lidocaine dental gel was applied to the oral mucosa with a microneedle patch and a patch with no microneedles, prior to infiltration with local anaesthesia on 2 visits. Pain was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) and 4-point verbal rating scale (VRS).

The use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques has generated a wide variety of blood microbiome data. Due to the large variation in bacterial DNA profiles between studies and the likely high concentrations of cell-free bacterial DNA in the blood, it is still not clear how such microbiome data relates to viable microbiota. For these reasons much remains to be understood about the true nature of any possible healthy blood microbiota and of bacteraemic events associated with disease.

Data And Sources: A Procter & Gamble Oral Care archive of clinical studies was reviewed from 2000 to 2020. Eligible studies were Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) investigating bioavailable gluconate-chelated SnF toothpaste efficacy compared to controls in adult participants measured following tactile (Yeaple force) and/or evaporative stimuli (Schiff score) in-vivo, duration <2 months (DH); or by erosive toothwear (profilometry) from in-situ samples, duration 10-15 days.
Objectives: To determine if an oxalate strip reduced fluid flow in dentine samples and whether this reduction was maintained following a 14 day intra-oral period.
Methods: Dentine tubule fluid flow was measured by a modified Pashley cell in 40 acid-etched dentine discs 1 mm thick, diameter >10 mm, with an acquired pellicle, pre-equilibrated with Hartmann's solution and conditioned by toothbrushing, pre and post treatment (10 min) with an oxalate (3.14 %) gel strip or no treatment.
Objectives: To design and validate a new index to assess tooth wear (TW) in the cervical region and its association with gingival recession (GR), for use both in research studies and as resource in General Dental Practice, with focused prevention and management strategiesparticularly related to aetiology of dentine hypersensitivity provided for each Code score.
Methods: Codes to reflect clinical presentations of the cervical region in health and disease recording both TW and GR were defined. Validation of the Code was undertaken by 3 trained examiners who scored buccal and lingual surfaces of eligible teeth in 42 adult healthy volunteers.
Objectives: To compare a calcium silicate and sodium phosphate toothpaste (CSSP) with a fluoride negative control toothpaste for dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain reduction after 14, 28 and 29 days.
Methods: This was a double blind, parallel study in 247 healthy adults with DH (Schiff score >2, tactile 10-20 g) in 2 teeth in different quadrants of the mouth. After acclimatisation, participants were randomised to CSSP or control toothpaste.
Objectives: To compare the pain/discomfort experienced by patients in supportive periodontal therapy, following treatment with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler, designed for use with warmed water irrigation, and a magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler.
Methods: This was a single-centre, randomised, split mouth study with regard to side, and crossover with regard to treatment order. Patients attending general dental practice for supportive periodontal therapy were randomised to receive treatment from one scaler on the left and the other scaler on the right-hand side of the mouth, the left side of the mouth always being treated first.
Our understanding of erosive tooth wear and its contributing factors has evolved considerably over the last decades. New terms have been continuously introduced, which frequently describe the same aspects of this condition, whereas other terms are being used inappropriately. This has led to unnecessary confusion and miscommunication between patients, professionals, and researchers.
