Previous studies evaluated the prognostic role of hematological parameters in predicting outcome in patients with infective endocarditis (IE). However, only a few studies evaluated the role of hematological parameters in patients undergoing surgery for IE. The aim of this study was to review our 20-year experience with the treatment of native (NVE) and prosthetic (PVE) valve endocarditis and to evaluate the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to monocyte ratio (NMR), and systemic inflammatory index (SII) on early and long-term outcomes of patients undergoing surgery for NVE and PVE.

University students in Central Italy: do they follow proper dietary habits?

Background: Eating a healthy diet is acknowledged as one of the main factors in preventing malnutrition and non-communicable diseases. As young students represent a group more prone to poor dietary habits, the aim of this study was to analyse the dietary habits of a group of undergraduate students attending university in a city of central Italy, Siena.

Methods: 4,700 students were invited to participate in a cross-sectional study completing an online self-administered questionnaire about their food habits.

Patient-Tailored Therapy for Complex Aortic Arch Anatomy: An Evolving Research Field with Custom-Made Solutions.

The treatment of complex aortic pathologies requires specialized techniques and tailored approaches due to each patient's unique anatomical and clinical challenges. The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) new guidelines identify the aorta as the body's 24th organ and reiterate that multidisciplinary aortic teams are recommended for shared decision-making to determine optimal treatment strategies. Patients treated for conditions such as aneurysms, dissections, intramural hematomas, or penetrating aortic ulcers may develop complex forms over time, necessitating careful follow-up and timely corrective actions.

Three Decades of Experience with Aortic Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis.

Turbulent blood dynamics in the left heart in the presence of mitral regurgitation: a computational study based on multi-series cine-MRI.

In this work, we performed a computational image-based study of blood dynamics in the whole left heart, both in a healthy subject and in a patient with mitral valve regurgitation. We elaborated multi-series cine-MRI with the aim of reconstructing the geometry and the corresponding motion of left ventricle, left atrium, mitral and aortic valves, and aortic root of the subjects. This allowed us to prescribe such motion to computational blood dynamics simulations where, for the first time, the whole left heart motion of the subject is considered, allowing us to obtain reliable subject-specific information.

Validation of a new model of selective antegrade cerebral perfusion with circulatory arrest in rats.

Background: Selective antegrade cerebral perfusion (SACP) is adopted as an alternative to deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) during aortic arch surgery. However, there is still no preclinical evidence to support the use of SACP associated with moderate hypothermia (28-30°C) instead of DHCA (18-20°C). The present study aims to develop a reliable and reproducible preclinical model of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with SACP applicable for assessing the best temperature management.

The area destined for agricultural production in Paraná state in Brazil is ~6 million hectares, of which 79% are under no-tillage systems (NTS) that can positively affect earthworm populations. Furthermore, earthworm abundance and richness can be valuable soil quality. This study assessed earthworm communities in long-term no-tillage sites (NTS) and nearby secondary Atlantic Forest (SF) fragments.

Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate the presence of dysphagia in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and to correlate swallowing impairment with hypnologic and anatomic parameters.

Methods: The study population includes 36 patients suffering from OSA. Patients were divided into two groups using the presence of dysphagia as a distinctive parameter.

Introduction: Total kidney volume (TKV) is a qualified biomarker for disease progression in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Recent studies suggest that TKV estimated using ellipsoid formula correlates well with TKV measured by manual planimetry (gold standard). We investigated whether the ellipsoid formula could replace manual planimetry for follow-up of ADPKD patients.

Here, we present a case study on long-term no-tillage farming systems in Brazil, where Glyphosate (GLY) has been applied for more than 35 years.

Voice Differences When Wearing and Not Wearing a Surgical Mask.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to investigate the impact of surgical mask on some vocal parameters such as F0, vocal intensity, jitter, shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio in order to understand how surgical mask can affect voice and verbal communication in adults.

Methods: The study was carried out on a selected group of 60 healthy subjects. All subjects were trained to voice a vocal sample of a sustained /a/, at a conversational voice intensity for the Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), wearing the surgical mask and then without wearing the surgical mask.

Challenging removal of a knotted nasogastric tube following insertion under general anaesthetic.

A 74-year-old man presented with acute small bowel obstruction secondary to recurrence of a caecal tumour. The patient underwent laparotomy and formation of loop ileostomy and had a nasogastric tube (NGT) inserted in the theatre. In this study, we assessed voice/speech symptoms in 48 parkinsonian patients staging <3 on the modified Hoehn and Yahr scale and 37 healthy subjects using the Robertson dysarthria profile (a clinical-perceptual method exploring all components potentially involved in speech difficulties), the Voice handicap index (a validated measure of the impact of voice symptoms on quality of life) and the speech evaluation parameter contained in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III). Accuracy and metric properties of the Robertson dysarthria profile were also measured.
