A new class of peptidomimetic is reported in which one of the amide C=O bonds of the peptide backbone is replaced by an oxetane ring. They are synthesised by conjugate addition of various α-amino esters to a 3-(nitromethylene)oxetane, reduction of the nitro group and further coupling with N-Z protected amino acids to grow the peptide chain. Structural insights are provided by X-ray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulations.

At present, resource recovery by irrigation of wastewater to plants is usually driven by the value of the water resource rather than phosphorus recovery. Expanded irrigation for increased phosphorus recovery may be expected as the scarcity and price of phosphorus increases, but providing the necessary treatment, storage and conveyance comes at significant expense. An alternative to taking the wastewater to the plants is instead to take the plants to the wastewater.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) forecasts a 34% increase in the world population by 2050. As a consequence, the productivity of important staple crops such as cereals needs to be boosted by an estimated 43%. This growth in cereal productivity will need to occur in a world with a changing climate, where more frequent weather extremes will impact on grain productivity.

Microalgae in waste stabilization ponds (WSP) have been shown to accumulate polyphosphate. This luxury uptake of phosphorus is influenced by the wastewater phosphate concentration, light intensity and temperature, but the dynamics of how these factors affect luxury uptake with respect to time are not understood. With improved understanding of the dynamics of this mechanism and how it could be manipulated, a phosphorus removal process utilizing luxury uptake by microalgae might be developed.

Phosphorus removal in waste stabilization ponds (WSP) is highly variable, but the reasons for this are not well understood. Luxury uptake of phosphorus by microalgae has been studied in natural systems such as lakes but not under the conditions found in WSP. This work reports on the effects of phosphate concentration, light intensity, and temperature on luxury uptake of phosphorus by WSP microalgae in continuous culture bioreactors.

On 25 April 1998, a breach of the tailings dam of the Los Frailes pyrite mine in southwestern Spain resulted in the release of 6 million m3 of acidic water and toxic sludge high in heavy metals. Contaminated material extended 40 km downstream, affecting agricultural land and parts of the wildlife-rich Doñana Natural and National Parks, including the Entremuros, a very important area for birds. We report on the concentrations, distributions and bioavailability of zinc and cadmium in soil and vegetation from the Entremuros in November 1998 and October 1999, following 2 'cleanup' operations.
