The burden of research ethics review falls not just on researchers, but also on those who serve on research ethics committees (RECs). With the advent of automated text analysis and generative artificial intelligence (AI), it has recently become possible to teach AI models to support human judgment, for example, by highlighting relevant parts of a text and suggesting actionable precedents and explanations. It is time to consider how such tools might be used to support ethics review and oversight.

In this topical review, we integrate 3 concepts-public health practice, community engagement, and cross-sector governance-to consider the following question: What is the underlying relationship between public health and cross-sector governance according to which the field can understand the role of community engagement in achieving health equity? We begin with an overview of public health practice and the practice of community engagement. Next, we position these practices in the broader turn toward cross-sector governance. The integration of these themes reveals that common tools for community engagement fail to address questions about how services should be funded, how resources should be distributed, and which members of the community have a claim to services.

Selected patients with early-stage melanoma have a "hidden high risk" of poor oncologic outcomes. They might benefit from clinical trials, and ultimately, if warranted by trial results, judicious everyday use of adjuvant therapy. A promising tool to identify these individuals is the immunoprint assay.

The black-box nature of most artificial intelligence (AI) models encourages the development of explainability methods to engender trust into the AI decision-making process. Such methods can be broadly categorized into two main types: post hoc explanations and inherently interpretable algorithms. We aimed at analyzing the possible associations between COVID-19 and the push of explainable AI (XAI) to the forefront of biomedical research.

Background: Masculinity norms play a crucial role in men's help-seeking behaviors, service-use, and coping strategies for depression. While previous studies provided evidence for the association between gender role orientations, work related attitudes, stigmatization of men with depression and depressive symptoms, it remains unclear to what extent gender role orientations change over time and whether psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment have an impact on these transformations. Additionally, the role of partners in supporting depressed men and the impact of dyadic coping on these processes have not been explored.

There is a significant risk for ongoing and treatment-resistant courses of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in patients after solid organ transplantation. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for the development of hepatitis E, including the dietary habits of patients. We conducted a retrospective single-center study with 59 adult kidney and combined kidney transplant recipients who were diagnosed with HEV infection between 2013 and 2020.

Locomotor skill transfer is an essential feature of motor adaptation and represents the generalization of learned skills. We previously showed that gait adaptation after crossing virtual obstacles did not transfer to the untrained limb and suggested it may be due to missing feedback of performance. This study investigated whether providing feedback and an explicit goal during training would lead to transfer of adaptive skills to the untrained limb.

Women of childbearing age show increased fertility after kidney transplantation. Of concern, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, and allograft dysfunction contribute to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. We performed a retrospective single-center study, including 40 women with post-transplant pregnancies after single or combined pancreas-kidney transplantation between 2003 and 2019.

Locomotor training based in virtual reality (VR) is promising for motor skill learning, with transfer of VR skills in turn required to benefit daily life locomotion. This study aimed to assess whether VR-adapted obstacle avoidance can be transferred to a physical obstacle and whether such transfer is retained after 1 week. Thirty-two young adults were randomly divided between two groups.

In the 60+ years that the modern concept of informed consent has been around, researchers in various fields of practice, especially medical ethics, have developed new models to overcome theoretical and practical problems. While (systematic) literature reviews of such models exist within given fields (e.g.

Use of head-mounted displays (HMDs) and hand-held displays (HHDs) may affect the effectiveness of stability control mechanisms and impair resistance to falls. This study aimed to examine whether the ability to control stability during locomotion is diminished while using HMDs and HHDs. Fourteen healthy adults (21-46 years) were assessed under single-task (no display) and dual-task (spatial 2-n-back presented on the HMD or the HHD) conditions while performing various locomotor tasks.

Obstacle avoidance is one of the skills required in coping with challenging situations encountered during walking. This study examined adaptation in gait stability and its interlimb transfer in a virtual obstacle avoidance task. Twelve young adults walked on a treadmill while wearing a virtual reality headset with their body state represented in the virtual environment.

Background: In de novo kidney transplant recipients (KTR) treatment with belatacept has been established as a comparable option as maintenance immunosuppression, preferably as a strategy to convert from calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)- to belatacept-based immunosuppression. Switch to belatacept demonstrated improved renal function in patients with CNI-induced nephrotoxicity, but risk of transplant rejection and the development of donor-specific antibodies (DSA) are still a matter of debate. Only few data are available in patients at increased immunological risk and late after transplantation.

Donor-reactive immunity plays a major role in rejection after kidney transplantation, but analysis of donor-reactive T-cells is not applied routinely. However, it has been shown that this could help to identify patients at risk of acute rejection. A major obstacle is the limited quantity or quality of the required allogenic stimulator cells, including a limited availability of donor-splenocytes or an insufficient HLA-matching with HLA-bank cells.

Microscopic hematuria is a common feature of patients with Alport syndrome, a familial nephropathy due to mutations in COL4A3, COL4A4 or COL4A5. These genes encode for α3, α4, and α5 type IV collagen polypeptide chains (collagen IV α345), crucial for the structural component of the glomerular basement membrane. Even patients with mild phenotype, namely isolated microhematuria (X-linked females with thin basement membrane on electron microscopy or heterozygous carriers of COL4A3 or COL4A4 mutations), can potentially progress to proteinuria and to end-stage renal disease.

Article Synopsis
  • - Occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) is identified by HBV DNA presence in HBsAg-negative individuals; this study assessed its prevalence in chronic haemodialysis (CHD) and kidney transplant recipients (KTxR).
  • - Among 417 CHD patients, there were no cases of OBI, while KTxR had a very low prevalence (<1%) of OBI, with one HBsAg-negative patient testing positive for HBV DNA in serum.
  • - Findings suggest routine HBV DNA screening isn't necessary for CHD patients, but pretransplant screening for KTxR is advisable; testing HBV DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) appears unnecessary. *

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is an opportunistic infection diagnosed in immunocompromized patients. After solid organ transplantation, early infection has decreased as a result of effective prophylaxis, but late infections and even outbreaks caused by interpatient transmission of pneumocystis by air are present in the SOT community. Different risk factors for PJP have been described and several indications for PJP prophylaxis have to be considered by clinicians in patients even years after transplantation.

In order to accurately diagnose child abuse or neglect, a physician needs to be familiar with diseases and medical conditions that can simulate maltreatment. Unrecognized cases of abuse may lead to insufficient child protection, whereas, on the other hand, over-diagnosis could be the cause of various problems for the family and their potentially accused members. Regarding child abuse, numerous cases of false diagnoses with undetected causes of bleeding are described in the scientific literature, but, specifically concerning leukemia in childhood, only very few case reports exist.
