Variations in cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden between West and South European countries are rarely reported. To address this knowledge gap, The Lancet Regional Health-Europe convened experts from a broad range of countries to assess the current state of knowledge of cardiovascular disease inequalities across Europe. This Review is specifically focused on West and South European countries.

Background: The aim of this study is to assess the current status of metabolic and behavioural risk factors for cardiovascular diseases among the adult population in South and Southeast Asia using World Health Organization (WHO) STEPS data.

Methods: We used WHO STEPS surveys data in ten South and Southeast Asian countries. Weighted mean estimates of prevalence of five metabolic risk factors and four behavioural risk factors were calculated by country and overall region.

Background: There is a strong societal belief that parents are role models for their child's dietary behaviours in early life that may persist throughout the life course. Evidence has shown inconclusive dietary resemblance in parent-child (PC) pairs. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine dietary resemblance between parent and children.

Purpose: Dietary patterns (DPs) during pregnancy have been well researched. However, little is known about maternal diet after pregnancy. The aim of the study was to explore maternal DPs longitudinally, examine trajectories over 12 years after pregnancy and identify associated factors.

This Review provides an epidemiological overview of global mortality from acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Across the regions of the world where data are available, mortality from ACS - including premature (age <70 years) mortality from ACS - was higher in men than in women. In both sexes, age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) for ACS in 2020 were highest in lower-income global regions.

Background: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK imposed a national lockdown prompting change to daily routines. Among behaviours impacted by the lockdown, diet and physical activity may be particularly important due to their association with mental health and physical health. The aim of this study was to explore people's experiences of how lockdown impacted their physical activity, dietary behaviours and mental health, with a view to informing public health promotion.

Aim: To a) understand the perceptions and experiences of patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions in relation to their physiotherapy care and their acceptability of 'Making Every Contact Count Healthy Conversation Skills' (MECC HCS) as a brief intervention within this care and, b) explore the mechanisms through which MECC HCS might facilitate behaviour change and enhance self-management in patients with MSK conditions.

Methods: This study adopted an exploratory qualitative design, in which individual, semi-structured interviews with participants were conducted. Eight participants were interviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the rising prevalence of modifiable non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors among adolescents globally, highlighting concerns about their clustering in certain individuals.
  • Utilizing data from 140 countries, the research analyzed trends in nine specific NCD risk factors, finding a significant increase in adolescents dealing with four or more factors from 14.8% to 44% between 2003-2017.
  • The findings revealed substantial variation in the prevalence of these risk factors across countries and regions, with South-East Asia showing the highest discrepancies, indicating a public health issue that varies greatly by location.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to the UK government enforcing lockdown restrictions to control virus transmission. Such restrictions present opportunities and barriers for physical activity and healthy eating. Emerging research suggests that in the early stages of the pandemic, physical activity levels decreased, consumption of unhealthy foods increased, while levels of mental distress increased.

Background: Countries in the South and Southeast Asia region grapple with significant challenges due to the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) in women. An understanding of the country specific DBM geographical and socioeconomic distribution in South and Southeast Asian countries will enable targeting of DBM interventions towards high-risk populations in the region. This study aimed to analyse anthropometric indicators for women's nutrition at national and subnational levels in seven South and Southeast Asian countries and assess the association between nutritional status and socioeconomic factors.

Aim: To explore the current use and perceptions of the Wessex model of Making Every Contact Count (MECC), incorporating Healthy Conversation Skills (HCS), focussing specifically on physiotherapists supporting people living with musculoskeletal conditions.

Methods: A mixed method, sequential explanatory design was employed. This article reports the first phase of the study, in which an online questionnaire was administered, consisting of items relating to perceived acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, sustainability, and uptake of MECC HCS.

Background: As the World Health Organization urges countries to strengthen their noncommunicable disease monitoring and surveillance activities, setting-specific innovations are emerging. Diet - a key, modifiable risk factor for chronic diseases - is particularly challenging to capture reliably. By socially validating self-report dietary survey tools, we may be able to increase the accuracy and representativeness of data for improved population health outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • This Review discusses the serious impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the WHO European Region, highlighting it as the leading cause of death.
  • A significant concern is premature deaths (under 70 years), resulting in over 60 million lost years of life annually in Europe.
  • There are notable disparities in CVD-related health outcomes and data availability between countries, emphasizing the need for consistent monitoring and evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies to address these inequalities.

Article Synopsis
  • The WHO emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors, particularly in countries like Nepal, where NCDs account for two-thirds of annual deaths.
  • A comprehensive survey conducted in Nepal from February to May 2019 involved 6,475 participants aged 15-69 to evaluate behavioral and biochemical risk factors linked to NCDs using the WHO STEPS method.
  • Key findings revealed that a majority (97%) of participants consumed fewer than five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, with significant rates of smoking (17%), alcohol consumption (6.8%), and obesity (24.3%), while factors such as age, sex, and education influenced the prevalence of

Article Synopsis
  • - Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the top cause of death worldwide, and poor maternal nutrition may contribute to these diseases and their risk factors in adult children.
  • - A review of research from 27 studies across 10 countries found that maternal exposure to famine during pregnancy is associated with negative metabolic outcomes (like blood pressure and glucose levels) in adult offspring, but evidence linking maternal BMI and diet to these outcomes is less clear.
  • - Overall, while some connections between maternal famine exposure and NCD risk in offspring were observed, the findings are inconsistent and warrant further investigation into maternal nutritional impacts during pregnancy.

Microfinance has emerged as an effective approach to address health outcomes, particularly infectious diseases and maternal and child health. However, there remains a significant knowledge gap about microfinance and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). This review synthesises current evidence on microfinance and NCDs, including NCD-specific modifiable risks, health-seeking behaviour, and financing mechanisms of adults using microfinance services.
