Entorhinal cortex (EC) LIII and LII glutamatergic neurons make monosynaptic connections onto distal apical dendrites of hippocampal CA1 and CA2 pyramidal neurons (PNs), respectively, through perforant path (PP) projections. We previously reported that a brief train of PP stimuli evokes strong supralinear temporal summation of excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in CA1 PNs that requires NMDAR activation, with relatively little summation in CA2 PNs in mice of either sex. Here we provide evidence from combined immunogold electron microscopy, cell-type specific genetic deletion and pharmacology that the NMDARs required for supralinear temporal summation of the CA1 PP EPSP are presynaptic, located in the PP terminals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects both grey and white matter (WM), but considerably more is known about the former. Interestingly, WM disruption has been consistently observed and thoroughly described using imaging modalities, particularly MRI which has shown WM functional disconnections between the hippocampus and other brain regions during AD pathogenesis when early neurodegeneration and synapse loss are also evident. Nonetheless, high-resolution structural and functional analyses of WM during AD pathogenesis remain scarce.

AbstractTropical ectotherms are thought to be especially vulnerable to climate change because they have evolved in temporally stable thermal environments and therefore have decreased tolerance for thermal variability. Thus, they are expected to have narrow thermal tolerance ranges, live close to their upper thermal tolerance limits, and have decreased thermal acclimation capacity. Although models often predict that tropical forest ectotherms are especially vulnerable to rapid environmental shifts, these models rarely include the potential for plasticity of relevant traits.

The effects and interactions of incubation time and chick preplacement holding time on mortality at placement, utilization of yolk sac, crop filling rate, early feeding-drinking behavior, and broiler live performance were investigated. Ross 308 broiler hatching eggs from a 39-week-old flock were set in two identical setters in a commercial hatchery, with the setting time 12 h earlier in one machine. The slender anole, Anolis apletophallus, is a small arboreal lizard of the rainforest understory of central and eastern Panama. This species has been the subject of numerous ecological and evolutionary studies over the past 60 years as a result of attributes that make it especially amenable to field and laboratory science. Slender anoles are highly abundant, short-lived (nearly 100% annual turnover), easy to manipulate in both the lab and field, and are ubiquitous in the forests surrounding the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, where researchers have access to high-quality laboratory facilities.

G-Quadruplexes (G4s) are ubiquitous nucleic acid folding motifs that exhibit structural diversity that is dependent on cationic conditions. In this work, we exploit temperature-controlled single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (smFRET) to elucidate the kinetic and thermodynamic mechanisms by which monovalent cations (K and Na) impact folding topologies for a simple G-quadruplex sequence (5'-GGG-(TAAGGG)-3') with a three-state folding equilibrium. Kinetic measurements indicate that Na and K influence G4 formation in two distinctly different ways: the presence of Na modestly enhances an antiparallel G4 topology through an induced fit (IF) mechanism with a low affinity ( = 228 ± 26 mM), while K drives G4 into a parallel/hybrid topology via a conformational selection (CS) mechanism with much higher affinity ( = 1.

Sexual size dimorphism is widespread in nature and often develops through sexual divergence in growth trajectories. In vertebrates, the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor (GH/IGF) network is an important regulator of growth, and components of this network are often regulated in sex-specific fashion during the development of sexual size dimorphism. However, expression of the GH/IGF network is not well characterized outside of mammalian model systems, and the extent to which species differences in sexual size dimorphism are related to differences in GH/IGF network expression is unclear.
