Pigmented extramammary Paget's disease of the axilla mimicking melanoma: case report and review of the literature.

Pigmented Paget's disease is a rare variant that is often confused clinically and histologically with melanoma in situ. Herein, we describe a case of pigmented extramammary Paget's disease involving the axilla of a 79-year-old white male thought initially to represent malignant melanoma clinically and histologically. Review of the literature reveals that pigmented variant of Paget's disease, either mammary or extramammary, could be initially misdiagnosed as melanoma unless this entity is considered in the differential diagnosis, and additional confirmatory studies are performed.

p16 expression differentiates between desmoplastic Spitz nevus and desmoplastic melanoma.

Background: Loss of p16 in melanomas reflects worse outcomes for patients. It is associated with depth of invasion, ulceration, vascular invasion, lymph node metastases, metastases, recurrence of melanoma and decreased 5-year survival. Desmoplastic melanoma is an insidious malignant melanoma subtype that commonly occurs on sun-damaged skin of the head and neck area in elderly patients.

p16 expression in conventional and desmoplastic trichilemmomas.

The expression of p16 in cutaneous neoplasms is upregulated in melanocytic neoplasms, ultraviolet radiation-induced neoplasms, such as actinic keratoses and squamous cell carcinomas, and in lesions related to human papillomavirus, such as Bowen's disease and bowenoid papulosis. In cervical dysplasia and tonsillar carcinoma, there is such a close relationship between p16 and human papillomavirus (HPV) to the extent that p16 immunostaining is used as a surrogate marker for the presence of HPV proteins. In this study we were interested in the expression pattern of p16 in trichilemmomas.

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: three case reports and review of the literature.

We describe 3 cases of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and review the literature describing clinicopathologic features of 211 cases and the outcome. Of these, 74% of the cases affected women with median age of 52 years. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain or mass (57%), Budd-Chiari syndrome (17%), and deep vein thrombosis (4%).

In vitro comparison of agar and microbroth dilution methods for determination of MICs for Mycoplasma hominis.

Ten replicates of three Mycoplasma hominis strains were tested by microbroth and agar dilution against levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, gatifloxacin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and clindamycin. Both methods provide reproducible results. Agar dilution tends to yield higher MIC values for some drugs.

Bacillus cereus bacteremia in a preterm neonate.

Bacillus cereus is an uncommon but potentially serious bacterial pathogen causing infections of the bloodstream, lungs, and central nervous system of preterm neonates. A case of bacteremia caused by B. cereus in a 19-day-old preterm neonate who was successfully treated with vancomycin, tobramycin, meropenem, and clindamycin is described.

In vitro activity of ertapenem (MK-0826) against multi-drug resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae compared with 13 other antimicrobials.
