Background: Individuals living with chronic conditions (CC) typically have a higher risk of more severe outcomes when exposed to infection. Although many studies have investigated the relationship between CCs and COVID-19 severity, they are generally limited to clinical or hospitalized populations. There is a need to estimate the impact of pre-existing CCs on the severity of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection symptoms among the general population.

- Data was collected through a survey conducted from April to August 2022, revealing that about 17.2% of adults with confirmed infections and 16.7% of those with confirmed or suspected infections experienced PCC.
- Key factors increasing the likelihood of PCC included being under 65, having more pre-existing health conditions, and experiencing a more severe initial infection, while factors like male sex at birth and identifying as Black were linked to lower odds of developing PCC.
Because of the large number of infected individuals, an estimate of the future burdens of the long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection is needed. This systematic review examined associations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and incidence of categories of and selected chronic conditions, by age and severity of infection (inpatient vs. outpatient/mixed care).
