Article Synopsis
  • - Present active contour methods have difficulty with image segmentation due to inhomogeneities in texture, color, or intensity, leading to imprecise differentiation of image components and computational inefficiencies due to complex mathematical formulations.
  • - These methods can become trapped in local minimum energy configurations, affecting convergence and performance, especially in areas with weak or subtle boundaries.
  • - The proposed approach integrates region-based, edge-based, and saliency-based techniques, using a zero crossing feature detector and a saliency function to enhance the model's effectiveness, allowing for selective object segmentation in both homogeneous and inhomogeneous images.

Background And Purpose: Isolated posterior cerebral artery occlusions (iPCAO) were underrepresented in pivotal randomized clinical trial (RCTs) of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in ischemic stroke, and the benefit of EVT in this population is still indeterminate. We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis to compare the safety and efficacy of EVT compared to best medical management (BMM) in patients with iPCAO.

Methods: We searched Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane databases up to May 2023 for eligible studies reporting outcomes of patients with iPCAO treated with EVT or BMM.

Level set models are suitable for processing topological changes in different regions of images while performing segmentation. Active contour models require an empirical setting for initial parameters, which is tedious for the end-user. This study proposes an incremental level set model with the automatic initialization of contours based on local and global fitting energies that enable it to capture image regions containing intensity corruption or other light artifacts.

Background: Thyroid nodules are an extremely common entity, and surgery is considered the ultimate diagnostic strategy in those with unclear malignant potential. Unfortunately, strategies aiming to predict the risk of malignancy have inadequate specificity. Our group recently found that the microenvironment of thyroid cancer is characterized by an enhanced immune invasion and activated immune response mediated by double-negative T lymphocytes (DN T) (CD3CD4CD8), which are believed to enable or promote tumorigenesis.

Telomere biology disorders (TBDs) are a spectrum of multisystem inherited disorders characterized by bone marrow failure, resulting from mutations in the genes encoding telomerase or other proteins involved in maintaining telomere length and integrity. Pathogenicity of variants in these genes can be hard to evaluate, because TBD mutations show highly variable penetrance and genetic anticipation related to inheritance of shorter telomeres with each generation. Thus, detailed functional analysis of newly identified variants is often essential.
