Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to see if ovarian surgery during detorsion affects short-term ovarian function as measured by ultrasound compared to just detorsion.
  • Researchers reviewed data from 119 patients under 18 with confirmed ovarian torsion, assessing outcomes based on whether they underwent additional surgery during detorsion.
  • Results showed no significant differences in ovarian appearance or volume on ultrasound between those who had surgery and those who did not, suggesting surgery does not negatively impact ovarian function.

Objective: The ability to predict the need for emergency Cesarean delivery holds the potential to facilitate birth choices. The objective of the RECIPE study (Reducing Emergency Cesarean delivery and Improving the Primiparous Experience) was to externally validate a Cesarean delivery risk prediction model. This model, developed by the Genesis study, identified five key predictive factors for emergency Cesarean delivery: maternal age, maternal height, BMI, fetal head circumference (HC) and fetal abdominal circumference (AC).

Background: The RECIPE study aims to validate a risk prediction model for intrapartum caesarean delivery which has been developed by our group. The Genesis study was a prospective observational study carried out by the Perinatal Ireland Research Consortium across 7 clinical centres in Ireland between October 2012 and June 2015. Genesis investigated a range of maternal and fetal parameters in a prospective blinded study of 2336 singleton pregnancies between 39 + 0-41 + 0 weeks' gestational age.

Objective: Contemporary approaches to monitoring quality of care in obstetrics often focus on comparing Cesarean Delivery rates. Varied rates can complicate interpretation of quality of care. We previously developed a risk prediction tool for nulliparous women who may require intrapartum Cesarean delivery which identified five key predictors.

Background: In Ireland, pregnant women are not routinely screened for subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH).

Aim: Our objective was to compare the intelligence quotient (IQ) of children whose mothers had been diagnosed with SCH prenatally with matched controls using a case-control retrospective study.

Materials And Methods: In a previous study from our group, 1000 healthy nulliparous women were screened anonymously for SCH.

Introduction: The management of emergencies in Jehovah's Witnesses presents several challenges to obstetricians and gynaecologists. We present two cases of ectopic pregnancies in Jehovah's Witnesses recently managed in our institution. This is the first case review series of its kind that we could identify.

Aims: Activation of Notch signalling results in hyperplasia and tumorigenesis in murine mammary epithelium. However, there is little information regarding the expression of Notch1 in premalignant lesions and early breast cancer. We investigated expression of Notch1 in breast cancer development and its association with molecular subtypes.

The phospholipid transfer protein STARD10 cooperates with c-erbB signaling and is overexpressed in Neu/ErbB2 breast cancers. We investigated if STARD10 expression provides additional prognostic information to HER2/neu status in primary breast cancer. A published gene expression dataset was used to determine relationships between STARD10 and HER2 mRNA levels and patient outcome.

The oncoprotein c-Myc is frequently overexpressed in breast cancer and ectopic expression in breast cancer cell lines attenuates responses to antiestrogen treatment. Here, we review preliminary data aimed at further elucidating a potential role for c-Myc in clinical endocrine resistance in breast cancer. Immunohistochemical and semi-quantitative PCR revealed that c-Myc protein and c-myc mRNA were frequently overexpressed in both ER-positive and ER-negative breast carcinoma.
