Selenium-enriched probiotics have attracted much attention due to the physiological activities of both probiotics and selenium (organic selenium). In this study, we investigated the mitigating effect of selenium-enriched GG (LGG@Se) and its pathway on alcohol-induced liver injury (ALI) in mice. The results showed that LGG@Se was superior to LGG and sodium selenite in alleviating ALI.

Objectives: Glutathione S-transferase alpha (GSTα) is an important antioxidant enzyme closely associated with the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The alterations in GSTα protein levels associated with Alzheimer's disease and their impact on cognitive abilities remain unclear. Thus, investigating the fluctuations of GSTα protein levels in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential.

This study aimed to examine whether an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-based parenting program, incorporating topics of emotional and stress management, parenting skills training, autism-related education, and self-care learning, could be successfully implemented, well-received, and beneficial for parents of children with autism. We randomly assigned 40 parents to either participate in the eight-session ACT-based parenting program or receive usual care only. The program was found to be feasible, with many parents willing to participate and complete the sessions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between albumin-corrected anion gap (ACAG) levels and all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with congestive heart failure.
  • The analysis of data from 7,787 patients showed that higher ACAG levels are associated with increased mortality risk, especially in patients with lower left ventricular ejection fractions.
  • Mediation analysis identified factors like red cell distribution width and acute kidney injury as contributing to this relationship, suggesting ACAG could help identify higher-risk patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a high mortality rate, and current diagnostic methods like LI-RADS often lead to indeterminate results, complicating accurate diagnosis.
  • Researchers developed four deep learning models using CT scans, finding that the Spatio-Temporal 3D Convolution Network (ST3DCN) performed best, significantly outperforming standard radiological interpretation in identifying HCC.
  • The ST3DCN model demonstrated strong diagnostic accuracy in both internal validation (AUCs up to 0.919) and external testing (AUC of 0.901), indicating its potential as an effective tool for HCC diagnosis.

In this study, we investigated the ameliorative effects of selenium-enriched FZU3103 (Lf@Se) and its pathway on alcoholic liver injury (ALI) in mice. The results showed that Lf@Se was superior to Lf and inorganic selenium in alleviating ALI. Oral Lf@Se effectively prevented lipid metabolism disorders, improved liver function, promoted alcohol metabolism, and alleviated liver oxidative damage in mice.

High molecular weight polysaccharides (GLPH, ≥300 kDa) are the major compounds of Ganoderma lucidum with improving liver function. However, the effect of GLPH on improving acute liver injury (ALI) wasn't revealed. Herein, the ameliorating effects and mechanisms of GLPH were revealed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-ALI mice.

Background: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been widely used in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, yet the practical performance of FIT combined with questionnaire-based risk assessment (QRA) remains undetermined. Moreover, risk factors for distinct CRC precursors identified in screening have been rarely compared.

Methods: This study was based on a population-based CRC screening in China, with 2,120,340 participants completing both FIT and QRA.

  • Infected skin wounds are complex and pose significant challenges for healing, necessitating effective treatments to promote tissue regeneration and combat infections.
  • A dual peptide-coordinated dynamic hydrogel was designed using gelatin, melittin (an antibacterial peptide), and an angiogenic peptide to enhance infection control and support tissue repair.
  • The hydrogel shows excellent biocompatibility and dynamic properties, allowing for injectability and self-healing, which makes it ideal for treating irregular and deep wounds while accelerating healing through antibacterial action and new blood vessel formation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the incidence of the prostaglandin-associated periorbital syndrome (PAPS) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension after using topical prostaglandin analogues (PGAs) for 3-6 months.
  • Among the 55 patients studied, key indicators such as interpupillary distance and exophthalmos were measured, alongside subjective assessments of periocular changes, showing significant changes primarily at the 1 and 3-month marks.
  • Results indicated that bimatoprost resulted in the highest incidence of PAPS, with noticeable periorbital changes like eyelash growth and hyperpigmentation increasing over time.

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is a major cause of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in many countries. Hepatocyte proliferation, autophagy and antioxidant capacity are crucial to the prognosis of APAP-induced liver injury, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we found that human antigen R (HuR) protein expression was markedly increased in the model of APAP-induced liver injury, and conditional hepatocyte-specific HuR knockout aggravated APAP-induced liver injury in mice.

Background: Both genetic factors and lifestyle play a critical role in colorectal cancer (CRC), but the extent to which an increased genetic risk can be offset by a healthy lifestyle remains unclear.

Methods: We included 51,171 participants from the PLCO cohort. A polygenic risk score was created based on 205 genetic variants associated with CRC, and a healthy lifestyle score was constructed based on six lifestyle factors.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a promising technology for sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. However, a fully passive RIS cannot independently process signals. Wireless systems equipped with it often encounter the challenge of large channel matrix dimensions when acquiring channel state information using pilot-assisted algorithms, resulting in high pilot overhead.

Chinese rice wine (CRW) is an alcoholic beverage made mainly from rice or grain through saccharification and fermentation with Jiuqu (starter). Jiuqu makes an important contribution to the formation of the flavor characteristics of rice wine. Hongqu and Maiqu are two kinds of Jiuqu commonly used in CRW brewing.

Article Synopsis
  • - The E. sabinae complex, a group of small arthropods within the Eriophyoidea, presents challenges in identifying distinct species due to their similar physical traits and limited morphological variation.
  • - By analyzing thousands of genetic data points from 55 specimens, researchers identified ten separate species within this complex, demonstrating both genetic isolation and instances of gene flow among them.
  • - The study indicates that these species experienced rapid evolutionary changes and distinct population sizes during the Quaternary period, showcasing the complexity of species delimitation and the potential for genetic mixing across species lines.

(starter) makes an important contribution to the formation of the flavor characteristics of rice wine (HQW). Qu (GTQ) and Qu (WYQ) are two kinds of commonly used in HQW brewing, but the comparison of the two kinds of HQW is still insufficient at present. The objective of this study was to compare the dynamic changes of amino acids (AAs), higher alcohols (HAs), bioamines (BAs), volatile flavor compounds (VFCs), and microbial communities in HQW fermentation, with GTQ and WYQ as starter.
