We propose a new technique to fabricate a highly specialized optical element, a hybrid planar Grating/Fresnel lens (G-Fresnel), which is particularly useful to improve or enable more-affordable miniature/portable spectrometers. Both the Fresnel and the grating surface are fabricated simultaneously by sandwiching soft PDMS between a hard grating and a pre-replicated negative Fresnel surface. Several adhesion reduction techniques are also investigated that help improve both fabrication and cost efficiency (by reducing the solidification time) as well as the lifetime of the mold.

A diamino-bis(phenolate) chromium(III) complex, CrCl(THF)[L], 1, where [L] = dimethylaminoethylamino- N, N-bis(2-methylene-4,6- tert-butylphenolate), has been synthesized in high yield and characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. This complex combined with 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) or bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)ammonium chloride or azide salts (PPNCl or PPNN) shows improved activity over previously reported amine-bis(phenolate) chromium(III) complexes for copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and CO to yield poly(cyclohexene) carbonate (PCHC). Kinetic studies of the complex/DMAP system showed the activation energy for polycarbonate formation to be 62 kJ/mol.

Measuring the ion distribution pattern in a drift tube under atmospheric pressure is very useful for studies of ion motion and design of ion mobility spectrometers (IMS); however, no mature method is available for conducting such measurements at present. We propose a simple and low-cost technique for profiling the two-dimensional ion distribution in any cross section of a drift tube. Similar to particle-image velocimetry, we first send sample ions with fluorescence properties into the drift tube and use a receiving plate to collect and accumulate them.

Recently, accumulating evidence provides that dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is considered to play vital roles in tumor progression. Based on microRNA arrays, we found that microRNA-448 (miR-448) was significantly downregulated in breast cancer tissue specimens. In our study, we were in an effort to clarify the function, the direct target gene, and the molecular mechanisms of miR-448 in breast cancer.

Considering the advantages and research status of microfluidic chip coupling with mass spectrometry (MS), a microfluidic chip-based multi-channel ionization (MCMCI) for the extraction of untreated compounds in complex matrices without sample pretreatments was developed. Quantitative analysis of human urine spiked with various rhodamine B concentrations was also performed, and good linearity was obtained. Comparing to the macro ionization device, MCMCI significantly improved the integration of ionization source, simplified the operation of such a device, and greatly increased the signal intensity with much lower gas pressure.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic progressive lung disease with few treatments. Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to be beneficial in pulmonary fibrosis because they have immunomodulatory capacity. However, there is no reliable model to test the therapeutic effect of human MSCs in vivo.

Background: Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is a genetic disorder of lymphocyte homeostasis due to impaired apoptosis. It was initially regarded as a very rare disease, but recent studies show that it may be more common than previously thought. Defects in a couple of genes have been identified in a proportion of patients with ALPS, but around one-third of such patients remain undefined genetically.

Busulfan is an alkane sulphonate currently used as an anticancer drug and to prepare azoospermic animal models, because it selectively destroys differentiated spermatogonia in the testes. However, few studies have focussed on the exact effects of busulfan treatment on the epididymis currently. The present study assessed the effect of busulfan on epididymal morphology and the blood-epididymis barrier in mice.

We introduce and investigate a method to identify the feature point of an electrocardiogram (ECG) to provide real-time and accurate trigger signals for pulsatile ventricular assist devices (PVADs). An important part of this method is an improved data processing algorithm, in which a differential calculator and another a low-pass filtering were added to avoid drift in the original signal and systematically delay caused by physical devices. The method was systematically illustrated in this article and a test-setup was built based on the LabVIEW program development environment.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT), a circulating acute-phase reactant antiprotease, is produced and secreted by cells of endodermal epithelial origin, primarily hepatocytes, and by immune cells. Deficiency of A1AT is associated with increased risk of excessive lung inflammation and injury, especially following chronic cigarette smoke (CS) exposure. Exogenous administration of mesenchymal progenitor cells, including adipose tissue-derived stromal/stem cells (ASC), alleviates CS-induced lung injury through paracrine effectors such as growth factors.

We report the rational design of metal-organic layers (MOLs) that are built from [Hf O (OH) (HCO ) ] secondary building units (SBUs) and Ir[bpy(ppy) ] - or [Ru(bpy) ] -derived tricarboxylate ligands (Hf-BPY-Ir or Hf-BPY-Ru; bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, ppy=2-phenylpyridine) and their applications in X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy (X-PDT) of colon cancer. Heavy Hf atoms in the SBUs efficiently absorb X-rays and transfer energy to Ir[bpy(ppy) ] or [Ru(bpy) ] moieties to induce PDT by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ability of X-rays to penetrate deeply into tissue and efficient ROS diffusion through ultrathin 2D MOLs (ca.
