Studies have been made on the microscopic identification of red jinseng, dog bone, indian bread, yanhusuo and datura flower in Zhuanggu Shenjin Capsules, as well as on the identification of ginsengside and tetrahydropalmatine by TLC and the determination of icariin by dual wavelength TLC-scanning. The content of the latter compound should be no less than 0.380mg/g and the average rate of recovery 97.

Measurements were done by electron resonance and spectrophotometry, and observations were made on the volume, weight, necrosis incidence rate of sarcoma tissues, and mortality in all groups. The OFR and MDA content in sarcoma tissues in the HBO group was significantly higher than those of the control groups (P < 0.

Methods standardized by the US Centers for Disease Control were used for measuring different parameters, and quality control was emphasized to assure comparability between workers and farmers. Three 24-hour recalls were collected from each participant in each survey.

Recently, possible involvement of the abnormal production of IL-6 in autoimmune symptoms was suggested in patients with cardiac myxomas, Castleman's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. However reports of IL-6 abnormal production in patients with IDDM are rare.

Thirty-two male rats in the experiment were randomly divided into four groups: normobaric air group, normoxic hyperbaric nitrox group, nonconvulsion HBO group and convulsion HBO group. L-Enk content in striatum and hypothalamus was determined by radioimmunoassay.

The distribution of recombinant human interleukin-2 (rhIL-2) after intravenous administration of 125I- or U-14C-labeled rhIL-2 is reported in the major organs of the rat. Five minutes after the administration of U-14C-labeled rhIL-2, the radioactivity had been rapidly cleared from the plasma, while 38% of the dose was found in the kidneys, confirming that the major site of clearance for rhIL-2 is the kidney. After 1 h, a large fraction of the radioactivity had disappeared from the kidney and was found in the carcass.

Seventy two cases of lung cancer treated by intrapericardial total pneumonectomy were reported. Pre-operative vital capacity were 50% of the estimated values. After the operation, 5 cases were complicated by respiratory failure, but none was related to pericardiotomy.

Total pneumonectomy combined with thoracoplasty should be applied to tuberculosis-destructed lungs unresponsive to anti-TB treatment, of which the clinical symptoms are evident and both the maximum ventilation and vital capacity are 50% of the estimated values, and in which no organic disorders of the heart are found on examination. But for those below the age of 18, or with the left lung destructed alone, obvious left deviation of the mediastinum, relatively smaller residual cavity on the left side and negative sputum, simple total pneumonectomy should be considered. Postoperative care to improve the resistance of the respiratory system and to prevent recurrent infection is of significance to better long-term response.

Ninety-seven strains of Mycobacterium leprae recovered from patients with previously untreated multibacillary leprosy were tested for dapsone susceptibility. The specimens originated from Shanghai Municipality, Jiang-su Province and Fu-jian Province. Approximately 28% of the strains either did not infect the mice or the results of susceptibility were inconclusive due to the low proportion of viable organisms in the bacterial populations.

The antimycobacterial activities of two newer ansamycins, isobutylpiperazinylrifamycin SV (R-76-1) and cyclopentylrifamycin SV (DL 473), were compared with those of rifampin (RMP) both in vitro and in vivo. In terms of minimal inhibitory concentrations against a number of cultivable mycobacteria, R-76-1 was about eight times more active in vitro than RMP; whereas DL 473 was only slightly more active than RMP. Therapeutic activities of R-76-1 versus RMP and DL 473 versus RMP were compared, respectively, in the experimental infection of mice with Mycobacterium lepraemurium by different treatment schedules (immediate and delayed) and dosage regimens.
