Background: Valproate (VPA) as a first-line antiepileptic drug is useful for the most types of epileptic seizure treatment. Previous studies observed that VPA influenced one-carbon metabolism (OCM), consequently, DNA methylation. However, other individual genetic variations, as well as VPA, modify DNA methylation.

Background: Chronic non-healing wounds present a substantial economic burden to healthcare system; significant reductions in quality of life for those affected, and precede often serious events such as limp amputations or even premature deaths. This burden is also likely to increase with a larger proportion of elderly and increasing prevalence of life-style diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Reviews of the evidence on the burden of illness associated with chronic wounds have not been comprehensive in scope and have not provided an assessment of the distribution of the health care costs across categories of resource use.

Background: With the availability of next-generation sequencing technologies, genomic prediction based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data is now feasible in animal breeding schemes and was expected to lead to higher predictive ability, since such data may contain all genomic variants including causal mutations. Our objective was to compare prediction ability with high-density (HD) array data and WGS data in a commercial brown layer line with genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) models using various approaches to weight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Methods: A total of 892 chickens from a commercial brown layer line were genotyped with 336 K segregating SNPs (array data) that included 157 K genic SNPs (i.

We propose a scheme for designing a new optical receiving system that can reduce the received-energy spot size via integration of a compound parabolic concentrator with a hemispherical lens. SolidWorks is used to model the receiving system, while TracePro is employed for simulations. The field of view is set to 30° and the radius of the compound parabolic concentrator outlet is 5 mm, which is also the radius of the hemispherical lens.

We report on a nanoinfrared (IR) imaging study of ultraconfined plasmonic hotspots inside graphene nanobubbles formed in graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. The volume of these plasmonic hotspots is more than one-million-times smaller than what could be achieved by free-space IR photons, and their real-space distributions are controlled by the sizes and shapes of the nanobubbles. Theoretical analysis indicates that the observed plasmonic hotspots are formed due to a significant increase of the local plasmon wavelength in the nanobubble regions.

Rationale: Ingestion of a fishbone is a common cause of esophageal injury, but spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition due to the esophageal penetration by a swallowed fishbone. Prompt diagnosis can be seldom made owing to incomplete patient history taking and difficulties in imaging evidence identification.

Patient Concerns: We describe the case of a 62-year-old woman who was stuck in her throat by a fishbone, and complained of back pain, paresis of the lower limbs and fever, successively.

Osteosarcoma (OS) has become one of the most common primary malignant tumors in the children and adolescents with a poor prognosis owing to its high malignant and metastatic potential. Although increasing evidence indicates that miR-451 could inhibit the growth and metastasis of OS, its effect on angiogenesis in OS is still very poor. What is more, the mechanism by which miR-451 affects the OS has not been fully elucidated.

The newly discovered intracytosolic pattern recognition receptor nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) has been studied as an important indicator of T helper 2 (Th2) inflammation, and its effect on regulatory T (Treg) cells is likely to modulate the immune response. In this study, we attempted to study the expression of NOD2 and its impact in human airway smooth muscle cells (HASMC). Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to measure the expression level of NOD2 in HASMC and comparisons were made between those from asthmatic and non-asthmatic donors; we found that NOD2 was significantly upregulated in asthma patient tissues and cell lines.

The current standard treatment for ovarian cancer is aggressive surgery followed by platinum-based combination chemotherapy. Recurrence and chemotherapeutic drug resistance are the two main factors that account for the high mortality of most ovarian cancers. Liposomal doxorubicin is primarily used for the treatment of ovarian cancer when the disease has progressed after platinum-based chemotherapy.

The operation of each hair cell within the cochlea generates a change in electrical potential at the frequency of the vibrating basilar membrane beneath the hair cell. This electrical potential influences the operation of the cochlea at nearby locations and can also be detected as the cochlear microphonic signal. The effect of such potentials has been proposed as a mechanism for the non-local operation of the cochlear amplifier, and the interaction of such potentials has been thought to be the cause of the broadness of cochlea microphonic tuning curves.

Preservation of residual hearing after cochlear implantation is now considered an important goal of surgery. However, studies indicate an average post-operative hearing loss of around 20 dB at low frequencies. One factor which may contribute to post-operative hearing loss, but which has received little attention in the literature to date, is the increased stiffness of the round window, due to the physical presence of the cochlear implant, and to its subsequent thickening or to bone growth around it.

In the imaging process of satellite-based pushbroom hyperspectral imager, attitude motions of satellite platform, represented by vibrations, will cause aliasing of the object information comes from different sub-areas of the detector, leading to degradation of hyperspectral image quality. In order to suppress and correct the imaging errors caused by satellite vibrations more effectively, spatial and spectral degradation mechanisms of typical dispersive pushbroom imaging spectrometer caused by satellite vibration are studied in this paper, including theoretical simulation and experimental study. With the analysis of spectral mixing process during exposure, the relationship between spectrum of ground object and satellite attitude is obtained, and a degradation model of pushbroom spectral imaging is presented.

Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a cytokine that is able to downregulate inflammation. Its overexpression is directly associated with the difficulty in the clearance of chronic viral infections, such as chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV infection, and infection-related cancer. IL-10 signaling blockade has been proposed as a promising way of clearing chronic viral infection and preventing tumor growth in animal models.

Micromonas strains of small prasinophyte green algae are found throughout the world's oceans, exploiting widely different niches. We grew arctic and temperate strains of Micromonas and compared their susceptibilities to photoinactivation of Photosystem II, their counteracting Photosystem II repair capacities, their Photosystem II content, and their induction and relaxation of non-photochemical quenching. In the arctic strain Micromonas NCMA 2099, the cellular content of active Photosystem II represents only about 50 % of total Photosystem II protein, as a slow rate constant for clearance of PsbA protein limits instantaneous repair.

Background: Chronic wounds impose a significant and often underappreciated burden to the individual, the healthcare system and the society as a whole. Preliminary literature search suggests that there are at present no reliable estimates on the total prevalence of chronic wounds for different settings and categories of chronic wounds. Such information is essential for policy and planning purposes as the increasing number of elderly and the prevalence of lifestyle diseases point in the direction of an increased burden.

We show that the surface plasmons of a two-dimensional Dirac metal such as graphene can be reflected by linelike perturbations hosting one-dimensional electron states. The reflection originates from a strong enhancement of the local optical conductivity caused by optical transitions involving these bound states. We propose that the bound states can be systematically created, controlled, and liquidated by an ultranarrow electrostatic gate.

One of the hypotheses about the pathogenesis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the dysfunction of serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission. While certain 5-HT receptor subtypes are likely critical for the symptoms of PTSD, few studies have examined the role of 5-HT receptor in the development of PTSD, even though 5-HT receptor is critical for contextual fear extinction and anxiety-like behavior. Therefore, we hypothesized that stimulation of 5-HT receptor in the dorsal hippocampus (DH) could prevent hippocampal autophagy and the development of PTSD-like behavior in animals.
