This study synthesized cellulose-g-poly(acrylic acid) with high water absorbency using the cellulose extracted from pineapple leaves. The synthesis experiment used a novel combination of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the cross-linker and the initiator, respectively. Experimental results showed that the concentrations of AIBN and EGDMA had significant effects on the structure and the water absorbency of the cross-linked materials.

Background: Cognitive impairment, including dementia, is frequently under-detected in primary care. The Consortium for Detecting Cognitive Impairment, including Dementia (DetectCID) convenes three multidisciplinary teams that are testing novel paradigms to improve the frequency and quality of patient evaluations for detecting cognitive impairment in primary care and appropriate follow-up.

In this descriptive, qualitative study, we conducted eight focus groups with diverse informal and formal caregivers to explore their experiences/challenges with nursing home (NH) to emergency department (ED) transfers and whether telehealth might be able to mitigate some of those concerns. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Transfers were commonly viewed as being influenced by a perceived lack of trust in NH care/capabilities and driven by four main factors: questioning the quality of NH nurses' assessments, perceptions that physicians were absent from the NH, misunderstandings of the capabilities of NHs and EDs, and perceptions that responses to medical needs were inadequate.

The present study illustrates the design, fabrication, and evaluation of a novel multifocal point (MFP) transducer based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film for high-frequency ultrasound application. The fabricated MFP surface was press-focused using a computer numerical control (CNC) machining tool-customized multi-spherical pattern object. The multi-spherical pattern has five spherical surfaces with equal area and connected continuously to have the same energy level at focal points.

The fabrication of nanotherapeutic systems capable of stimuli-responsive drug delivery and photoacoustic imaging (PAI)-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) is considered significant for chemo-photothermal therapy applications in cancer therapy. In the present study, the Prussian blue nanoflake (PBNF) decorated mesoporous silica hybrid nanoparticle (PB@MSH-EDA NPs) is reported for PAI-guided chemo-photothermal therapy applications. The amine group enriched mesoporous silica channels can be used to encapsulate an anticancer drug for chemotherapy, and the surface decorated PBNFs can convert a near-infrared (NIR) laser (808 nm) into heat for photothermal therapy and can also be used for PAI applications.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) using nanoparticles have gained significant attention for its therapeutic effect for cancer treatment. In the present study, we fabricated polypyrrole nanoparticles by employing bovine serum albumin-phycocyanin complex and the formulated particles were stable in various physiological solutions like water, phosphate buffered saline and culture media. The formulated nanoparticles did not cause any noticeable toxicity to MDA-MB-231 and HEK-293 cells.

Multifunctional nano-platform for the combination of photo-based therapy and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for cancer treatment has recently attracted much attention to nanotechnology development. In this study, we developed iron-platinum nanoparticles (FePt NPs) with the polypyrrole (PPy) coating as novel agents for combined photothermal therapy (PTT) and PAI. The obtained PPy-coated FePt NPs (FePt@PPy NPs) showed excellent biocompatibility, photothermal stability, and high near-infrared (NIR) absorbance for the combination of PTT and PAI.
