The current study aims to identify candidate insertion/deletion (INDEL) markers associated with photoperiod sensitivity (PS) in rice landraces from the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The whole-genome sequencing of 20 accessions was conducted to analyze INDEL variations between two photoperiod-sensitivity groups. A total of 2240 INDELs were identified between the two photoperiod-sensitivity groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Lignin is a plentiful polymer that has many potential future applications but converting it into valuable products can be expensive, making it suitable for medium- to high-value uses.
  • Two promising areas for its application include creating new types of polymers for plastics and using lignin in flow batteries as redox species, benefiting from its low cost and renewability.
  • Oxidative lignin depolymerization is a key process to produce low molecular weight, multifunctional compounds, which could lead to sustainable advancements in both the plastic and energy storage industries.

Photoreforming is a clean photocatalytic technology for simultaneous plastic waste degradation and hydrogen fuel production, but there are still limited active and stable catalysts for this process. This work introduces the brookite polymorph of TiO as an active photocatalyst for photoreforming with an activity higher than anatase and rutile polymorphs for both hydrogen production and plastic degradation. Commercial brookite successfully converts polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic to acetic acid under light.

This study makes an ecological economic comparison between three different rice farming strategies in the Mekong Delta. Interviews were made with 30 farmers with two crops of rice and low dikes (2RLd), 30 farmers with three crops of rice and high dikes (3RHd) and 18 farmers with two crops of rice and one crop of fish (2RF). 2RF farmers had the highest annual net income and benefit cost ratio, because of low production costs and high yields of rice and fish.

Increased agriculture and aquaculture production in the Mekong Delta during the last two decades has improved farmers' income, national export earnings and reduced poverty, but has also impacted on the environment and ecosystem services (ES) of importance to peoples' livelihoods and well-being. Through group discussions, interviews and questionnaires, this study assesses stakeholders' perceptions of the status and trends of ES in the Mekong Delta and how these have been influenced by agriculture development. 15 of 24 ES were assessed to be impacted negatively by agriculture intensification, and especially supporting and regulating ES (SRES).

Background: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), accompanied by classification systems for cytology, can offer a cheap and convenient option for the diagnosis of breast cancer in women with suspicious breast lumps. In this study, we aimed to assess the accuracy of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) Yokohama system in a Vietnamese oncology centre.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2021 to April 2022 at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are carcinogenic pollutants. However, the average concentration in 1 h of some pollutants belonging to BTEX, such as benzene, in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is higher than the national standard QCVN 06:2009/BTNMT by about ten times. This research is the first to calculate the emission of BTEX for developing countries on a city scale.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found three special chemicals called sesquiterpene lactones in a plant from Vietnam.
  • They figured out what these chemicals look like using special tests, and one of them has never been found in Vietnam before!
  • The chemicals showed they can help fight cancer by killing bad cells and stopping their growth, so researchers think they might be useful in developing new cancer treatments.

Origin of the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) has been intensely debated in the scientific community since the first infected cases were detected in December 2019. The disease has caused a global pandemic, leading to deaths of thousands of people across the world and thus finding origin of this novel coronavirus is important in responding and controlling the pandemic. Recent research results suggest that bats or pangolins might be the hosts for SARS-CoV-2 based on comparative studies using its genomic sequences.

As semiconductor photocatalysts showing their efficient redox ability upon illumination, new development of materials to enhance the pollution degradation is gaining popularity, especially on their oxidation ability. In this study, a highly stable ternary Fe-ZnO/WO nanocomposite photocatalyst has been synthesized in order to improve charge transfer of photocatalytic oxidation under 30W LED light (425-470 nm) to efficiency degrade the Levofloxacin (LVF) in the solution. This catalyst was characterized and analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, X-ray XPS, UPS, PL, TRPL, LSV, EIS, and Photocurrent.

Even though the matter was not widely acknowledged, informal recycling plays a vital role in waste treatment in many developing countries. In Vietnam, the management of waste collection and treatment faces many difficulties, as there is no statistical data or description of the informal sector in waste collection and recycling to clarify their role, their scale, and their capacity. This paper presents the preliminary data processed by informal waste collectors and aggregators in six Vietnamese cities, namely, Vinh, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh, and Hanoi.

In previous studies, we isolated the known compound saponin XII from the roots of Miq. Here, we show that this compound reduced the number of acute myeloid leukemia OCI-AML3 cells as evaluated by a hemocytometer. Flow cytometry analyses demonstrated that the reported activity was associated with a significant increase of apoptosis and of cells in the G/G phase of the cell cycle, with a decrease of cells in the S and G/M phases.
