Genetic parameters and litter trait trends of Danish pigs in South Vietnam.

Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and various litter trait trends of Danish pigs in South Vietnam, including the number born alive (NBA), number weaned (NW), and litter weight at the 21st day (LW21).

Methods: Records of 936 Yorkshire sows with 3361 litters and 973 Landrace sows with 3161 litters were used to estimate the variance components, genetic parameters, and trends of NBA, NW, and LW21. The restricted maximum likelihood method was applied using VCE6 software to obtain the variance components and genetic parameters.

A protocol for the cryoconservation of breeds by low-cost emergency cell banks - a pilot study.

A protocol was developed for collection and storage of somatic cell samples under adverse conditions with little infrastructure, for somatic-cell banks as a backup for endangered livestock breeds. The procedure, which is uniform across species, includes sample collection with ear taggers with an integrated tag/vial system, and recording of global positioning system (GPS) coordinates, digital images and breed information. In a pilot study, the procedures were tested on six local Vietnamese populations of pigs, sheep and goats.

Light-induced layer by layer thickening in photosensitive liquid crystal membranes.

Photosensitive smectic membranes of pure liquid crystal (LC) were studied under white light illumination. A thickness increase is observed in the illuminated film area. Appropriate light and thermal conditions lead to a thickening layer by layer process.

Faceted monodomains of liquid crystal smectic blue phases.

Smectic blue phases (BP(Sm)) are mesophases of thermotropic liquid crystals, which exhibit both three-dimensional orientational order, such as classical blue phases, and smectic positional order. The BP(Sm) phases appear as the three-dimensional counterpart of the twist grain boundary phases. By growing large faceted monocrystals of BP(Sm) phase, we provide, for the first time at the length scale of the lattice parameter, information on the symmetry of the orientational unit cell.
