Introduction: Achieving viral suppression is key in the global strategy to end the HIV epidemic. However, the levels of viral suppression have yet to be described in many resource-limited settings.

Methods: We investigated the time to virologic failure (VF; defined as a viral load of ≥1000 copies/ml) and changes in CD4 counts since starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) in a cohort of HIV-infected adults in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Evaluation of Opportunities to Improve Hematopathology Diagnosis for Vietnam Pathologists.

Objectives: We evaluate the need for, feasibility of, and impediments to improving hematopathology diagnoses for cancer hospitals in Vietnam.

Methods: Two hematopathologists from the United States visited three major cancer treatment hospitals in Vietnam to workshop a sampling of difficult hematopathology cases. With Vietnamese pathologists, they toured histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and ancillary laboratory facilities.

This paper reports on the in situ observation of phase transformation in an iron carbide nanocrystal encapsulated in a graphitic shell by means of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). A FeC nanocrystal in orthorhombic (o-FeC) structure with carbon graphitic cover is captured at the initial time of the experiment. Little is known about how patients in developing countries, such as Vietnam, are satisfied with eye care services. The purpose of this study was to assess the satisfaction with health services and its associated factors among patients attending a national institute of ophthalmology in Vietnam. In a cross-sectional study utilizing quantitative methods, 500 inpatients and their relatives attending a national institute of ophthalmology in Vietnam were approached for data collection.

Further Molecular Analysis of G6PD Deficiency Variants in Southern Vietnam and a Novel Variant Designated as G6PD Ho Chi Minh (173 A>G; 58 Asp>Gly): Frequency Distributions of Variants Compared with Those in Other Southeast Asian Countries.

We conducted a survey of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency among newborn babies at Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh, southern Vietnam. A total of 90 deficient babies were detected, including 85 in the Kinh ethnic group, 4 Chinese, and 1 in the K'Ho minority group. In the Kinh ethnic group, G6PD variants such as G6PD Viangchan (n=32), Kaiping (n=11), Canton (n=8), Chinese-5 (n=7), Union (n=5) and Quing Yuan (n=4) were detected.

Molecular Screening for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV): Detection of Genomic EBNA-1, EBNA-2, LMP-1, LMP-2 Among Vietnamese Patients with Nasopharyngeal Brush Samples.

Epstein-Bar virus (EBV) is considered to be intimately associated with development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the most common and high incidence cancer of the head and neck in Asian countries, especially in Vietnam. In this study, we validated associations between highly conserved segments of the EBV genome, including EBNA-1, EBNA-2, LMP-1, LMP-2 and nasopharyngeal cancer, with the aim of applications with non-invasive brush samples for early diagnosis and as a prognostic biomarker. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to assess the presence of EBNA-1, EBNA-2, LMP-1, LMP-2 in nasopharyngeal brush samples from Vietnamese NPC patients and non-cancer controls.

Patterns of antimicrobial resistance in intensive care unit patients: a study in Vietnam.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a major concern in developing countries. The present study sought to define the pattern of antimicrobial resistance in ICU patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Methods: Between November 2014 and September 2015, we enrolled 220 patients (average age ~ 71 yr) who were admitted to ICU in a major tertiary hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

We derive a number of exact relations between response functions of holomorphic, chiral fractional quantum Hall states and their particle-hole (PH) conjugates. These exact relations allow one to calculate the Hall conductivity, Hall viscosity, various Berry phases, and the static structure factor of PH conjugate states from the corresponding properties of the original states. These relations establish a precise duality between chiral quantum Hall states and their PH conjugates.

Ceftazidime/avibactam comprises the broad-spectrum cephalosporin ceftazidime and the non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor avibactam. This phase 3, randomised, double-blind study (NCT01726023) assessed the efficacy and safety of ceftazidime/avibactam plus metronidazole compared with meropenem in patients with complicated intra-abdominal infection (cIAI) in Asian countries. Subjects aged 18-90 years and hospitalised with cIAI requiring surgical intervention were randomised 1:1 to receive every 8 h either: ceftazidime/avibactam (2000/500 mg, 2-h infusion) followed by metronidazole (500 mg, 60-min infusion); or meropenem (1000 mg, 30-min infusion).

Broadly reactive aptamers targeting bacteria belonging to different genera using a sequential toggle cell-SELEX.

Conventional cell-SELEX aims to isolate aptamers to a single unique target bacteria species. We propose a method to isolate single-stranded DNA aptamers that have broad reactivity to multiple bacterial targets belonging to different genera. The key of the proposed method is that targets of interest are changed sequentially at each SELEX round.

Synthesis of multivalent glycopeptide conjugates that mimic an HIV epitope.

Recently, we reported a directed evolution method which enabled us to discover sequences of glycopeptides that bind with picomolar affinity to HIV antibody 2G12 and are of interest as HIV vaccine candidates. In this manuscript, we describe the syntheses of several of these large (~11-12 kDa) glycopeptides by a combination of fast flow peptide synthesis and click chemistry. We also discuss the optimization of their attachment to carrier protein CRM197, affording antigenic and immunogenic conjugates ready for animal vaccination.

Low implementation of Xpert MTB/RIF among HIV/TB co-infected adults in the International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) program.

Phenolic Compounds from the Lichen Lobaria orientalis.

The chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of Lobaria orientalis collected in the southwestern part of Central Vietnam led to the isolation of new β-orcinol depsidones, lobarientalones A and B (1 and 2), and diphenyl ethers, lobariethers A-E (3-7). These types of structures are often reported in different lichen species, but the absolute configuration of the stereogenic acetal center has not been defined. Transversus Abdominis Plane Block and Free Flap Abdominal Tissue Breast Reconstruction: Is There a True Reduction in Postoperative Narcotic Use?

Introduction: The use of the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is increasing in abdominally based autologous tissue breast reconstruction as a method to provide postoperative donor site analgesia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the TAP block in the immediate postoperative period.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent autologous microsurgical breast reconstruction over a 2-year period (2013-2015) was conducted.
