Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of second litter syndrome (SLS) on the reproductive performance of sows, especially focusing on metrics like piglets born alive (PBA) and farrowing intervals (FI) across up to five reproductive cycles.
  • About 47.8% of sows experienced SLS, which significantly decreased their accumulative number of piglets born alive for the first two parities but showed comparable performance in later parities compared to sows without SLS.
  • The study concludes that SLS does not significantly harm future reproductive performance, suggesting that sows affected by SLS may not need to be culled, and calls for further research on the underlying mechanisms of PBA fluctuations.

A total of 94 Camborough-48 gilts at day 85 of gestation were randomly allocated into 2 groups: (1) control diet; (2) control diet + 4 × 10 CFU QST 713 per day.
