Our understanding of cardiac remodeling processes due to left ventricular pressure overload derives largely from animal models of aortic banding. However, these studies fail to enable control over both disease progression and reversal, hindering their clinical relevance. Here, we describe a method for progressive and reversible aortic banding based on an implantable expandable actuator that can be finely tuned to modulate aortic banding and debanding in a rat model.

We describe a technique for measuring focus errors in a cryogenic, wide-field, near-infrared space telescope. The measurements are made with a collimator looking through a large vacuum window, with a reflective cold filter to reduce the background thermal infrared loading on the detectors and optics. The vacuum window and cold filter introduce a wavefront error that we characterize using an autocollimating microscope.

This work investigates the electron-donating capabilities of two 10-π electron nitrogen bridgehead bicyclic [5,6]-fused ring systems, imidazo[1,2-]pyridine and imidazo[1,5-]pyridine rings. Eight compounds with varying positions of electron-withdrawing moieties (TCF or DCI) coupled to the imidazopyridine ring were synthesized and studied. DCI-containing compounds (-) exhibited a purely dipolar nature with broad absorption bands, weak fluorescence, large Stokes shifts, and strong solvatochromism.

Background And Objectives: Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt procedures can improve idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) symptoms. However, there are no automated methods that quantify the presurgery and postsurgery changes in the ventricular volume for computed tomography scans. Hence, the main goal of this research was to quantify longitudinal changes in the ventricular volume and its correlation with clinical improvement in iNPH symptoms.

Exercise leads to robust cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and psychological benefits that improve quality of life and longevity for older adults, but accompanying improvements in athletic parameters are less well explored. The aim of this review is to summarize some of the most common exercise modalities, namely, Pilates, martial arts (tai chi, Japanese-style karate, hard martial arts), locomotion (brisk walking/jogging and running), Masters sports, resistance training, and high-intensity interval training, in improving athletic performance for older adults. Regular participation in these activities can have robust yet unique impacts on physical performance that prolong exercise participation.

In this case series, we present four unique cases of Riga-Fede disease (RFD), a rare disorder characterized by mucosal trauma as a result of repetitive tongue protrusion against the incisors, leading to the development of a large oral mass/ulceration. Due to the rapid development and growth of these lesions mimicking malignancy, it is important for the general and pediatric otolaryngologist to correctly diagnose and treat this benign disorder. This series highlights the variable clinical presentations, along with comorbidities of RFD, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary care between the pediatric otolaryngologist and pediatric dentist in its management.

Background: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is known to modulate the immune system and contribute to the generation of anti-tumor T cells and stimulate T cell infiltration into tumors. Radiation-induced immune suppression (RIIS) is a side effect of radiation therapy that can decrease immunological function by killing naive T cells as well as SBRT-induced newly created effector T cells, suppressing the immune response to tumors and increasing susceptibility to infections.

Purpose: RIIS varies substantially among patients and it is currently unclear what drives this variability.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical imaging is vital for diagnosing non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (NICMs), but interpreting imaging studies can be time-consuming due to the need for patient history reviews.
  • *The study proposes using time-series analysis of longitudinal electronic health records (EHR) to predict NICMs more accurately, leveraging ICD-10 codes and recurrent neural network architectures.
  • *Results show that the model performed well in predicting NICMs using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), achieving good accuracy metrics, while performances for echocardiograms were more moderate, suggesting potential to ease physicians' workload.

Biomimetic tumor microenvironment models bridge the gap between in vitro and in vivo systems and serve as a useful way to address the modeling challenge of how to recreate the cell and system complexity associated with real tissues. Our laboratory has developed an ex vivo rat mesentery culture model, which allows for simultaneous investigation of blood and lymphatic microvascular network remodeling in an intact tissue environment. Given that angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis are key contributors to the progression of cancer, the objective of this study was to combine tissue and tumor spheroid culture methods to establish a novel ex vivo tumor spheroid-tissue model by verifying its use for evaluating the effects of cancer cell behavior on the local microvascular environment.

US Asian adults and people with limited English proficiency (LEP) confront mental health treatment receipt disparities. At the intersection of racial and language injustice, Asian adults with LEP may face even greater disparity, but studies have not assessed this through explicitly intersectional approaches. Using 2019 and 2020 National Survey of Drug Use and Health data, we computed disparities in mental health treatment among those with mental illness comparing: non-Hispanic (NH) Asian adults with LEP to NH White adults without LEP (joint disparity), NH Asian adults without LEP to NH White adults without LEP (referent race disparity), NH Asian adults with LEP to those without LEP (referent LEP disparity), and the joint disparity versus the sum of referent disparities (excess intersectional disparity).

Despite the wide availability of several safe and effective vaccines that prevent severe COVID-19, the persistent emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern (VOCs) that can evade vaccine-elicited immunity remains a global health concern. In addition, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs that can evade therapeutic monoclonal antibodies underscores the need for additional, variant-resistant treatment strategies. Here, we characterize the antiviral activity of GS-5245, obeldesivir (ODV), an oral prodrug of the parent nucleoside GS-441524, which targets the highly conserved viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp).
