Aims: We conducted this study to investigate the impact of muscle loss on musculoskeletal health, fall and fracture risks, and activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly patients with osteoporosis.
Materials And Methods: This age- and sex-matched cross-sectional study analyzed data from a medical center involving patients aged ≥ 50 from 2020 to 2022. The included participants were formed into three groups: 100 with osteoporosis only, 100 with osteosarcopenia, and 50 control individuals without osteoporosis and sarcopenia.
Background: Septic arthritis is a rare but devastating complication after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). While early treatment can prevent significant graft complications, outcomes are often inferior to those in uncomplicated ACLR. Furthermore, whether to retain or remove the graft after infection remains debatable.

This study investigated the interplay between host genetics, gut microbiota, and musculoskeletal health in a mouse model of osteosarcopenia, exploring the therapeutic potential of gut microbiota modulation.
Methods: We examined the effects of Rg3, a phytochemical, on osteosarcopenia and its interactions with host genetics and gut microbiota in six founder strains of the Collaborative Cross (CC) population.
The application of NMR crystallography to organic molecules is exemplified by two case studies. For the tosylate salt of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, Ritlectinib, solid-state NMR spectra are presented at a H Larmor frequency of 1 GHz and a magic-angle spinning (MAS) frequency of 60 kHz. Specifically, N-H heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence (HMQC) and H-H double-quantum (DQ) single-quantum (SQ) correlation experiments are powerful probes of hydrogen bonding interactions.

Despite the susceptibility of these patients to a second hip fracture (SHF), the literature insufficiently discussed its impact leading to poor outcomes. This study aims to directly assess the outcomes of elderly patients with initial hip fractures (IHF) vs those experiencing an SHF within a well-matched group with similar characteristics.

In this study, we carried out a comprehensive survey of the Reaxys database for all reactions in which the NSA functional group is consumed. Very different reactivities for different classes of NSAs, e.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with the FMS-related receptor tyrosine kinase 3 internal tandem duplication (FLT3/ITD) mutation have a poorer prognosis, and treatment with FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has been hindered by resistance mechanisms. One such mechanism is known as adaptive resistance, in which downstream signaling pathways are reactivated after initial inhibition. Past work has shown that FLT3/ITD cells undergo adaptive resistance through the reactivation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling within 24 h of sustained FLT3 inhibition.

Ocular manifestations range from fluctuations in vision, to microstructural changes in the retina and choroid, to dry eye disease. This narrative review highlights the range of pregnancy-related effects on the eye and vision that are likely to present in the context of routine eyecare.

Purpose: During the non-attack period, people with migraine may show retinal dysfunction. This study builds on previous work by exploring the possibility of foveal and non-foveal visual field and electroretinographic deficits and determining the overlap in eccentricity of such localized visual deficits in people with migraine.
Methods: Visual fields and multifocal electroretinography (mf-ERG) were tested in 27 people with migraine (aged 19-45 years) and 18 non-headache controls (aged 20-46 years).
The emergence of multicancer early detection (MCED) tests holds promise for improving early cancer detection and public health outcomes. However, positive MCED test results require confirmation through recommended cancer diagnostic imaging modalities. To address these challenges, we have developed a consultation and work-up protocol for definitive diagnostic results post MCED testing, named SPOT-MAS.

We aimed to investigate the association between CoI/ScI and mortality in patients hospitalised with mild-to-severe COVID-19.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a COVID-19 treatment hospital in Vietnam and collected all eligible medical records, with CoI/ScI status as the exposure (non-CoI/ScI and CoI/ScI, with the latter including nature of pathogen [bacterial, fungal, or bacterial + fungal] and multidrug-resistance pathogen [no MDRp or ≥ 1 MDRp]).
Antibiotic tolerance in reduces bacterial killing, worsens treatment outcomes, and contributes to resistance. We studied rifampicin tolerance in isolates with or without isoniazid resistance (IR). Using a minimum duration of killing assay, we measured rifampicin survival in isoniazid-susceptible (IS, n=119) and resistant (IR, n=84) isolates, correlating tolerance with bacterial growth, rifampicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), and isoniazid-resistant mutations.

Dysfunctional CFTR is the key variant of the lethal genetic disorder, cystic fibrosis (CF). In the past decade, highly effective CFTR modulator therapies, including elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor, have revolutionised CF management by correcting the underlying molecular defect to improve patient outcomes and life expectancy.

Methods: Data were derived from the ITC project in Vietnam, which included 1585 adult smokers at baseline (Wave 1, Aug-Oct 2018) followed up to waves 2 (Sep-Nov 2019) and 3 (Sep-Dec 2020). Generalized estimating equations regression was performed to estimate changes in the intention to quit.
Desmoid fibromatosis (DFs) is rare, low-grade neoplasm. Although it poses no risk of metastasis, DFs exhibits a range of clinical manifestations characterized by local infiltrative growth tendencies and a propensity for recurrence. Despite its nonmalignant nature, DFs can be highly debilitating and occasionally life-threatening, causing severe pain and functional limitations.

This study aimed to assess the anti-diphtheria toxoid antibodies status in Khanh Hoa Province and identify factors contributing to the vaccination policy in the south-central coast of Vietnam.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate the seroprevalence of anti-diphtheria toxoid antibodies among 1,195 participants, aged 5 - 40 years in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam.
Purpose: Studies have reported conflicting findings on the relationship between smoking and surgical site infection (SSI) post fixation for ankle and calcaneal fractures. This meta-analysis explored the effect of smoking on SSI incidence following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of these fractures.
Methods: Full-text studies on smoking's influence on post-ORIF SSI rates for closed ankle and calcaneal fractures were sourced from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases, with no consideration given to language or publication date.
Background: Smoking has long been recognized as a risk factor for impaired wound and bone healing, particularly in the context of ankle and foot surgery. Despite numerous studies exploring the association between smoking and complications following ankle replacement, there remains significant inconsistency in their findings. Therefore, this meta-analysis study aims to elucidate whether smoking increases the rate of complications after total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), providing valuable insights for clinical management.

FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) alone have limited and transient clinical efficacy thus calling for new targets for more effective combination therapy. In a loss-of-function RNAi screen, we identified NOTCH4 as one such potential target whose inhibition proved cytotoxic to AML cells, and also sensitized them to FLT3 inhibition.
