Transplacental transfer of cobalt: Evidence from a study of mothers and their neonates in the African Copperbelt.

Background: Transfer of the trace metal cobalt (Co) from mother to foetus has not been documented in populations with high environmental exposure to Co, as is the case in the African Copperbelt mining region. We analysed data obtained from 246 mother-infant pairs included (at delivery) in a previously published case-control study on birth defects, done in Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of Congo) between March 1, 2013, and Feb 28, 2015.

Methods: Co was measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry in maternal blood, maternal urine, umbilical cord blood and placental tissue, as available.

[Dust Exposure and Respiratory Health Effects Among Stones Crushers in Haut-Katanga Province, D.R. Congo].

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms and respiratory diseases and to assess respiratory function in stones crushers stones in the province of Haut Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This cross-sectional analytical study included 293 stones crushers and 295 office workers from public administrative services. A standardized respiratory health questionnaire was used, and lung function test performed with the use of peak flow-meters.

Respiratory health of women selling cassava, corn and soybean flour in Lumbumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of respiratory complaints in Congolese women selling grain flours in Lubumbashi. The study enrolled 370 women, including 183 cassava, corn and soybean flour selling women (exposed group) and 187 tax collectors in municipal markets (control group) in Lubumbashi, DRC. A standardized respiratory health questionnaire was used, and a lung function test performed with the use of peak flow-meters.

[Ovarian pregnancy: a case report].

We here report a case of left ovarian pregnancy passively detected in the General Reference Hospital outpatient clinic in Dilolo, Democratic Republic of Congo. The diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasound; the patient underwent surgery with uneventful postoperative course. Pregnant women and healthcare personnel should be aware of the importance of proper clinical and echographic monitoring in pregnancy for early diagnosis of abnormal implantations.
