What Are the Psychosocial Needs of Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer? A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYACs) have become recognized as a unique group in recent years. The unique developmental context and related challenges of being a young person with a cancer diagnosis can lead to a distinct and diverse set of psychosocial issues. Existing research has attempted to explore these psychosocial needs and challenges and to develop appropriate and individualized interventions.

Midwife led randomised controlled trials in Australia and New Zealand: A scoping review.

Background: Midwives are the largest workforce involved in caring for pregnant women and their babies, and are well placed to translate research into practice and ensure midwifery priorities are appropriately targeted in researched. Currently, the number and focus of randomised controlled trials led by midwives in Australia and New Zealand is unknown. The Australasian Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Trials Network was established in 2020 to build nursing and midwifery research capacity.

The Australian and New Zealand nephrology nursing workforce: clinical pressure and organisational culture.

There has been increasing prevalence in the community of chronic kidney disease and an increased demand for nephrology trained nursing staff. We explored how nephrology trained nurses are impacted by daily caseload pressure, organisational support and workplace education. A co-designed 57-item questionnaire developed by the research team and clinical nephrology nurses hosted on Qualtrics™ was distributed to nephrology nurses in Australia and New Zealand.

Impact of treatment summaries for cancer survivors: a systematic review.

Purpose: As a treatment summary (TS) documents information for follow-up care, it is believed to be an important communication tool for the patient, their GP, and other health professionals. The aim of this systematic review (SR) was to evaluate the impact of receiving a TS for cancer survivors when compared to receiving standard care and to identify knowledge gaps to inform future research.

Methods: A systematic search of electronic databases and grey literature was undertaken from August 2018 to October 2018.

Use of a Novel Measure of Nontechnical Skills in Surgical Trainees: Is There an Association With Technical Skills Performance?

Objective: To investigate whether scores on a psychological measure of concentration and interpersonal characteristics, The Attentional and Interpersonal Style Inventory (TAIS), are associated with performance of surgical skills.

Design: Postgraduate surgical trainees completed an operative surgical skills assessment in the simulation laboratory and the psychological measure (TAIS). The surgical skills assessment consisted of 6 tasks (3 per trainee): laceration suturing; lipoma excision; incision and closure of a laparotomy wound; bowel anastomosis; saphenofemoral junction ligation and basic laparoscopic skills.

Intensive home care packages for people with dementia: a realist evaluation protocol.

Background: Dementia presents a significant challenge to health systems and to the person and family affected. Home care is increasingly seen as a key service in addressing this challenge in a person-centred and cost-effective way. Intensive Home Care Packages (IHCPs) were introduced in Ireland to provide personalised and high levels of support for people with dementia to remain at home or be discharged home from hospital, and to build on the work of the HSE & Genio Dementia Programme.

[Regulation of inositol-1,4,5-triphosphate receptor by G(i)-protein].

The pertussis toxin (PT) inhibits thrombin-induced mobilising of Ca2+ but does not affect formation of inositol-1, 4, 5-triphosphate (IPh3). The latter being related to Gi and G0, the possibility of a direct effect of these proteins on the IPh3-induced release of Ca2+ from sarcoplasmic reticulum, was studied. The data obtained suggest existence of an association of the Gi3 protein with the IPh3-P on the sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane, as well as a direct modulation by the Gi protein of the Ca2+ release from intracellular stores.

A comparison of methods of dietary assessment in Australian children aged 11-12 years.

A total of 225 children attending year 7 classes in state primary schools in Perth, Australia, participated in the study. Nutrient intakes were determined by a number of low-intensity methods and compared with intakes determined by a reference method based on 14 24-h diet records collected over several months and covering each day of the week twice. The low-intensity methods were (i) a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) administered to the children in school, (ii) the same FFQ administered to the children's parents by post and (iii) a small number (one, two or three) of 24-h diet records completed by the children.
