Current methods for the evaluation of retention of endothelial cells seeded on vascular grafts are limited by the inability to specifically identify and quantitate seeded cells on a long-term basis. To address this problem we developed a method of quantification of graft surface coverage using genetic labeling of endothelial cells combined with computer-assisted image analysis. Rabbit aortic endothelial cells were transduced with a marker gene (lac-Z) and seeded on polytetrafluoroethylene grafts.

Sixty-one children who were restrained passengers in motor vehicle crashes had linear ecchymosis across the abdomen and had CT for abdominal trauma. Thirteen children (21%) had a lumbar spine injury, and 14 children (23%) injured a hollow viscus (bowel, 12; bladder, two); five children (8%) had both spine and hollow viscus injuries.

Subjects were also asked to select their current and ideal figures, the weight they felt would be most attractive to a potential partner, and the weight to which they would be most attracted in a potential partner from figures representing very thin to very heavy physiques. Heterosexual men were significantly heavier than homosexual men and desired a significantly heavier ideal weight.

A retroviral vector was constructed containing the human LDL receptor cDNA and was used to stably transduce primary skin fibroblasts from WHHL rabbits. The integrity and function of the introduced LDL receptor was established by immunoprecipitation, by a fluorescent LDL binding assay, and by the ability of the transduced cells to suppress 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase activity in response to exogenous cholesterol.

Infants were categorized by means of the Bohn quadrant analysis to determine the impact of ECMO on infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and a "poor prognosis." All infants assigned to the Bohn 100% mortality quadrant required ECMO.

The former occurs predominantly in young women, has a low malignant potential, and is highly curable with surgical treatment. Three cases are reported that illustrate the typical clinical features and the indolent nature of the tumor.

Since 1984, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used as rescue therapy in all infants (n = 25) with PPHN following CDH repair when conventional management failed, with an overall survival of 60%. Repair was performed in this hospital on 12 infants and in other hospitals in 13 infants transferred for consideration of ECMO after repair.

More than 2,600 children were admitted to Children's National Medical Center with blunt injury in 3 years; 395 were involved in a motor vehicle crash. Ninety-five of the crash occupants (24%) were known to be wearing safety belts.

During a 34-month period, 2,086 children younger than 15 years old were consecutively admitted to a Level I pediatric trauma center with blunt or penetrating trauma. For each child we prospectively recorded Trauma Score (TS), Injury Severity Score, (ISS), medical, and etiologic data.

However there is a small subset of patients who become incapacitated by massive liver enlargement and for whom effective nonsurgical therapy is limited. Recent surgical advances in the treatment of PLD have raised uncertainties regarding proper management of these highly symptomatic patients.

With deoxyinosine-containing degenerate oligonucleotide primers corresponding to conserved GTP-binding domains in ARFs, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify simultaneously from human DNA portions of three ARF genes that include codons for 102 amino acids, with intervening sequences. Amplification products that differed in size because of differences in intron sizes were separated by agarose gel electrophoresis.

To investigate possible cellular mechanisms for how activation of protein kinase C inhibits the relaxation caused by isoproterenol, we studied the effect of the protein kinase C activator 4 beta-phorbol-12 beta-myristate-13 alpha-acetate (PMA) on the increase in cyclic AMP (cAMP) production and adenylate cyclase activity caused by isoproterenol in bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells. Treatment of intact cells with PMA prevented in a time- and dose-dependent manner the increase in cAMP production caused by isoproterenol, whereas 4 alpha-phorbol-12 beta-myristate-13 alpha-acetate (4 alpha-PMA), which does not activate protein kinase C, did not affect isoproterenol-induced cAMP production. PMA also reduced the increase in adenylate cyclase activity caused by isoproterenol, forskolin, and Gpp(NH)p.

Occupational health nurses are in a prime position to impart knowledge and change attitudes and behaviors and thus are uniquely qualified to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate workplace health promotion programs. Employee health promotion programs are based on the theory that it costs less to educate workers about controllable lifestyle health risks than to pay for the cost of ill health.

A variety of devices is now available for venous access in patients requiring long-term infusions of chemotherapeutic agents, hyperalimentation solutions, blood products or antibiotics. All have advantages and disadvantages which may make the selection of one type of device appropriate under a given set of circumstances but inappropriate in another. Experience has shown that patients needing intensive therapy for hematologic malignancies are best served by lines that require minimal dissection for insertion, such as the Hickman catheter.

Consistent and reliable venous access is a major component of the management of patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Venous access devices such as the long-term right atrial catheter and the subcutaneous port have become a major aspect of the supportive care of such individuals, with resultant advantages which have improved their quality of life. Yet, the occurrence of infectious and non-infectious complications restricts the usefulness of these devices and warrants a standardized approach to device placement, patient education and the management of such complications.

Since Haight's first survivor in 1941, argument has continued about the relative merits of immediate repair, delayed primary repair, and staged repair, and the criteria for selection of each approach. The Waterston classification served as the foundation for selection of surgical management from 1966 to 1982.
