Impact of a Sensor-Based Platform on the Outcome of Medial Off-Loader Bracing in Individuals With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of a medial off-loader brace with sensor monitoring capabilities and associated phone application in improving outcomes for individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

Methods: This is a randomized clinical trial of participants with knee osteoarthritis, aged 40-75 with two groups: 1) brace-only and 2) brace+sensor (sensor providing walking time, knee range of motion, and 7-day activity streak). Both groups received a prefabricated custom-fitted medial off-loader brace and 12-wk self-guided exercise therapy program.

Implications of EMG channel count: enhancing pattern recognition online prosthetic testing.

Introduction: Myoelectric pattern recognition systems have shown promising control of upper limb powered prostheses and are now commercially available. These pattern recognition systems typically record from up to 8 muscle sites, whereas other control systems use two-site control. While previous offline studies have shown 8 or fewer sites to be optimal, real-time control was not evaluated.

A case report: Null-cell cardiac lymphoma in an English bulldog.

This case report describes a novel example of an extranodal null-type lymphoma in the myocardium of a middle-aged English bulldog who presented with signs of right heart failure. An echocardiogram found, in addition to the pericardial effusion, thickened right and left ventricular free walls and the interventricular septum. The right ventricular free wall myocardium had multinodular lesions, suspicious for infiltrative disease.

CLINICAL AND HISTOPATHOLOGIC OCULAR FINDINGS IN AQUARIUM-HOUSED COWNOSE RAYS ().

Cownose rays () are susceptible to ocular disease with their prominent globes, but despite being popular animals housed in aquaria, there is little published information about their normal ocular anatomy and common pathologic ocular findings. A total of 63 live cownose rays (CNR) from three unrelated, separately housed groups had ocular examinations, and 5 adult rays were selected for ocular ultrasound. All examinations were performed out of the water, and most without anesthesia.

Retinoschisis: a retrospective study of an uncommon retinal change in cats and dogs.

Retinoschisis is a poorly documented form of retinal degeneration characterized by cyst-like splitting that occurs between the inner nuclear and outer plexiform layers. The pathogenesis of retinoschisis is incompletely understood, but congenital, acquired and secondary aetiologies (glaucoma, inflammation, neoplasia) are described in humans. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence and associated histological and clinical features of retinoschisis in cats and dogs submitted for biopsy over a 10-year period.

Prevalence of Cardiac Lesions in Cases of Bovine Blackleg in Tennessee (USA), 2004-2018.

Blackleg is a common cause of death in cattle, mostly caused by the bacterium . Cardiac lesions were traditionally considered uncommon in cases of blackleg in cattle until a 2018 study reported otherwise. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of cardiac disease among cattle that died of blackleg in Tennessee, USA.

Longitudinal associations between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms among couples in the Mexican Health and Aging Study.

Objective: To examine the bidirectional associations between older adult spouses' cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms over time and replicate previous findings from the United States (US) in Mexico.

Design: Longitudinal, dyadic path analysis with the actor-partner interdependence model.

Setting: Data were from the three most recent interview waves (2012, 2015, and 2018) of the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS), a longitudinal national study of adults aged 50+ years in Mexico.

Unilateral mixed adenoma of the third eyelid lacrimal gland in a boxer dog.

A female boxer dog was presented with a mass expanding the left third eyelid. Histopathology revealed a mass composed of pleomorphic cells arranged in tubuloacinar structures, a fibrovascular myxoid stroma, and intermixed trabeculae of woven bone. The mass was diagnosed as a mixed adenoma of the third eyelid lacrimal gland.

Qualitative investigation of µ- and κ-opioid receptor distribution in the brains of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Objective: To perform a qualitative analysis of the distribution of µ- and κ-opioid receptor mRNA in the forebrain and midbrain of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Sample: 8 brains of male budgerigars.

Procedures: Custom-made RNA hybridization probes (RNAscope; Advanced Cell Diagnostics Inc) were used for fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) assays performed on selected fresh frozen prepared sections of brain tissue to identify µ- and κ-opioid receptor mRNA.

Margin of safety of extended-duration transdermal buprenorphine solution following multiple-dose administrations to cats.

Transdermal buprenorphine solution (TBS) is approved for the control of postoperative pain in cats where a single preoperative dose provides 4 days of analgesia. It is administered as a unit dose of 8 mg to cats weighing 1.2-3 kg and 20 mg to cats weighing to >3-7.

Suspected Macrorhabdosis during a Concurrent Salmonellosis Outbreak in a Wild Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata).

We describe necropsy lesions of three adult Yellow-rumped Warblers (Setophaga coronata) diagnosed with salmonellosis during a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium outbreak. One warbler had filamentous organisms consistent with Macrorhabdus ornithogaster at the proventricular-ventricular isthmus. There is limited information on Macrorhabdus ornithogaster infections in wild North American birds.

Pulmonary silicosis in 2 rock hyraxes, and literature review.

Two rock hyraxes (), from the Chattanooga Zoo, were submitted separately for autopsy at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center. The first was a 4-y-old intact female that died without premonitory signs and the second was a 10-y-old intact male that was euthanized because of severe renal disease. Microscopically, the lungs of both hyraxes had multifocal-to-coalescing, <1-mm diameter aggregates of epithelioid macrophages separated by streams of fibrous tissue.

The Implications of Early Marital Conflict for Children's Development.

Although negative associations between the frequency and intensity of marital conflict and children's adjustment are well documented, less is known about how parents' conflict styles are related to children's developmental outcomes. The present study examines whether exposure to different types of parents' conflict styles, during a child's first year of life, is related to children's behavioral outcomes in the first grade. Parents' conflict resolution styles (CRSs) and child outcomes were examined in a sample of 150 working-class, first-time parents and their children.

Correlation of Mock Board Examination Scores During Anatomic Pathology Residency Training with Performance on the Certifying Examination.

Mock board exams are common in residency programs across many disciplines. However, the value of mock board results in predicting success on the actual certifying examination is largely anecdotal and undocumented. The University of Tennessee anatomic pathology residency program has a long history of giving mock board exams twice a year during the course of the 3-year diagnostic training program.

Parents' work and children's development: A longitudinal investigation of working-class families.

The current study examines the relationship between working-class mothers' and fathers' job autonomy across the 1st year of parenthood and their children's behavior problems and adaptive skills in the 1st grade. Data came from a longitudinal study of 120 couples interviewed 5 times across the transition to parenthood and again when the target child entered the 1st grade. Mothers' job autonomy and fathers' work hours during the child's 1st year of life directly predicted fewer behavior problems and more adaptive skills in their children at 6-7 years of age.

Dyadic, longitudinal associations among outcome expectation and alliance, and their indirect effects on patient outcome.

Research indicates that patient outcome expectation (OE) correlates with improvement, and that this association may be mediated by better patient-therapist alliances. However, despite OE and alliance being dyadic and dynamic constructs, most research on these direct and indirect associations has assessed these variables from only one dyad member's perspective and at single time points. Addressing these gaps, we used a longitudinal actor-partner interdependence model to first examine OE-alliance associations.

Laryngeal Pilar Cyst Masquerading as an Internal/External Laryngocele.

Objectives: This study aimed to document and describe a case of a laryngeal pilar cyst and to review the literature.

Methods: We describe the case of a 65-year-old woman with a laryngeal pilar cyst presenting with occasional ear pain and positional dyspnea, with imaging studies suggesting external/internal laryngocele. We also review the existing clinical literature.

From Discovery to Practice: Translating and Transforming Work-Family Research for the Health of Families.

The aim of this paper is to examine the meaning of translational research in the work and family field. Specifically, we review findings from a longitudinal study of low-wage workers across the transition to parenthood and examine how this basic discovery research informs the next step in translational research, that of clinical practice. The authors describe three specific sets of findings that hold direct and immediate implications for interventions and policy that could support working families.

Effects of low-level laser therapy on the healing of surgically closed incisions and surgically created open wounds in dogs.

OBJECTIVE To assess insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin expression within pancreatic islets of horses with and without insulin resistance. ANIMALS 10 insulin-resistant horses and 13 insulin-sensitive horses. PROCEDURES For each horse, food was withheld for at least 10 hours before a blood sample was collected for determination of serum insulin concentration.

INVESTIGATION OF ENROFLOXACIN-ASSOCIATED RETINAL TOXICITY IN NONDOMESTIC FELIDS.

Enrofloxacin is known to cause retinal toxicity in domestic cats. The hallmark lesion of enrofloxacin-associated retinal toxicity in domestic cats is thinning of the outer nuclear layer of the retina. Enrofloxacin is commonly used to treat bacterial infections in nondomestic felids because of its action against a wide spectrum of bacteria and the ability for it to be given orally.
