In view of evidence of increasing ophthalmic injury in modern warfare we examined available data for evidence of any changes in the incidence of head and neck injuries since 1914. Although data concerning maxillofacial injuries were available for only five of 26 conflicts, we could find no evidence of increasing incidence of head and neck injury. Overall mean incidence of head and neck injury was 16%; greater than expected in terms of random wounding and the proportion of whole body surface area (12%).

A multi-centre, randomized, single-blind, parallel-group clinical trial was undertaken in 50 patients (26 fenticonazole, 24 clotrimazole) with symptomatic vaginal candidiasis to compare the antifungal efficacy and tolerability of single-dose intra-vaginal treatment with a fenticonazole ovule (600 mg) or a clotrimazole vaginal tablet (500 mg). Assessment was by laboratory mycological investigation and symptomatic assessments for a period of 3 weeks from the day of treatment. Of the 50 patients, 43 (23 fenticonazole, 20 clotrimazole) returned for assessment 1 week after drug administration and 32 (17 fenticonazole, 15 clotrimazole) were re-assessed 3 weeks after drug administration.

The GTP-dependence for stimulatory and inhibitory regulation of plasma membrane adenylate cyclase activity was measured in plasma membrane fractions isolated from a variety of cell types (platelets, lymphocytes, PC12 cells, GH3 cells, NBP2 cells, and hepatocytes). This report shows that the isolation of plasma membranes for the study of GTP-dependent adenylate cyclase activity was, for some cells, enhanced by the exposure of the cells to glycerol prior to cell lysis. The isolation of plasma membranes from other cells, which did not appear to be sensitive to glycerol pretreatment, was enhanced by the removal of heavy particulate matter prior to fractionation of the cell lysate.

Careful analysis of affinity-purified class II molecules (Ia Ag) from the murine MHC revealed the existence of a set of associated molecules that consistently co-purified with the Ia Ag. SDS-PAGE revealed that molecules of Mr of 41 to 43 kDa and 56 to 58 kDa were associated with the affinity-purified I-Ak Ag from the AKR B cell lymphoma AKTB-1b. Two-dimensional electrophoresis (IEF vs SDS-PAGE) allowed further characterization of four molecules in the 41- to 43-kDa range and two in the 56- to 58-kDa range.

Altered subcellular distribution and activity of protein kinase C (PKC) is associated with transmembrane signalling in a variety of systems in which receptor occupancy leads to increased hydrolysis of polyphosphoinositides. Here we report evidence that in B lymphocytes, cyclic-cAMP-generating signal transduction pathways can activate translocation of PKC from the cytosol to the nucleus. Elevated cAMP levels and translocation of PKC to the nucleus are induced by antibodies against Ia antigens in normal B lymphocytes.

We have reviewed 172 occurrences of vascular injuries caused by intravascular or perivascular drug injections. Various patterns of injury are discussed including presentation. Recommendations have been made for diagnostic evaluation, surgical and medical treatment based on proposed pathophysiologic etiologies and bacteriology.

A prospective randomized study compared the use of moxalactam disodium vs clindamycin phosphate and tobramycin sulfate for treatment of 190 patients with penetrating abdominal trauma. Twenty-seven patients were disqualified because of early death or failure to follow the protocol. The patients in each group were comparable regarding the cause and severity of injury.

An esophageal feeder and a rubber nasoesophageal tube were used to administer fluids to calves. Radio-opaque fluids were given and their destination determined by fluoroscopy and radiography. Fluids containing glucose and xylose were also given and plasma glucose and xylose concentrations measured.

The drug consumption of institutionalized and noninstitutionalized elderly in the central Kentucky area was surveyed. The 259 subjects above age 60 were randomly selected and consisted of 122 institutionalized and 137 noninstitutionalized subjects. Individual data on age, sex, drug intake, dosage, and health status were recorded.

A 9-year-old boy with documented congenital adrenal hyperplasia owing to a deficiency in C21 hydroxylation is described. Precocious virilization and testicular asymmetry were noted when he was 5 years old. Both of these conditions persisted despite progressively larger doses of replacement steroid therapy.

Five cases of granulomatous disease of the male genitalia are presented. Of these, 3 cases involved foreign-body reactions in which some form of hydrocarbon was the causative agent. In the other 2 cases, idiopathic granulomatous processes were found, and this condition may be secondary to endogenous lipoid degenerative processes.

In vitro colony-forming cells (CFUc) were evaluated in preleukemic and leukemic AK mice. Increased concentrations of CFUc were found in normal appearing marrow of superinfected animals 2-3 wk prior to the onset of lymphoma. CFUc were present in marrows of mice with virus-accelerated, spontaneous, and transplanted lymphoma.

Five Zirconi samples from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina yield discordant uranium-lead ages which suggest an original age of 820 million years and an episodic lead loss at 240 million years. The indicated age of lead loss is interpreted as the age of movement of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet.
