Neutral pion transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra at midrapidity (|y| less than or approximately 0.35) were measured in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=22.4, 62.

The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie.

More recently, prostate-specific antigen levels, usually in combination with digital rectal examination or transrectal prostatic ultrasonography, have been suggested to be useful for the detection of prostate cancer. To evaluate the association between a single serum prostate-specific antigen level and the subsequent development of prostate cancer, we measured serum levels in 35 men who donated blood to a community-based serum bank in 1974 and who subsequently developed prostate cancer and in 35 matched controls from the same group of volunteers.

The ratio of jet-associated baryons to mesons increases with centrality and p_{T,assoc}. For the most central collisions, the ratio is similar to that for inclusive measurements.

It is this group of infants who require the most therapeutic interventions to support them leading to frequent invasive procedures and the longest exposure to the hospital environment. However, infection rates vary from one unit to another, suggesting that there are differences in either how infection rates are determined or the care provided in the various units.

The S0-S1 origin of (E)-PVA occurs at 33,578 cm(-1), whereas that for (Z)-PVA occurs at 33,838 cm(-1), 260 cm(-1) above that for (E)-PVA.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA three-dimensional correlation function obtained from midrapidity, low p(T), pion pairs in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV is studied. The extracted model-independent source function indicates a long range tail in the directions of the pion pair transverse momentum (out) and the beam (long). A proper breakup time tau(0) ~ 9 fm/c and a mean proper emission duration Delta tau ~ 2 fm/c, leading to sizable emission time differences ({|Delta t(LCM)|} approximately 12 fm/c), are required to allow models to be successfully matched to these tails.

Amplitude and phase of scattered light were obtained in a diabetic rat and control model and biopsies were taken for blood vessel ingrowth and collagen concentration. NIR absorption coefficient correlated with blood vessel ingrowth over time, in both the control and diabetic animals.

The increasing incidence of a variety of cancers after the Second World War confronts scientists with the question of their origin. In Western countries, expansion and ageing of the population as well as progress in cancer detection using new diagnostic and screening tests cannot fully account for the observed growing incidence of cancer. Our hypothesis is that environmental factors play a more important role in cancer genesis than it is usually agreed.

The classical view according to which overweight/obesity is related to cancer considers adipose tissue as an active and metabolic "organ", acting through endocrine, autocrine and paracrine processes. Consequently, it has been hypothesized, that genesis and progression of cancer may be caused by different biological factors acting through diverse mechanisms including changes in the synthesis and bioavailability of sex hormones, insulin resistance, release of growth factors and/or proinflammatory cytokines and abnormal energetic disposal and expenditure. We have shown that overweight/obesity can be experimentally induced by benzo[a]pyrene, a universal well characterized chemical pollutant and that overweight/obesity may in fact be caused by several types of chemical pollutants.

The v(2) for phi mesons follows the trend of lighter pi+/- and K+/- mesons, suggesting that ordinary hadrons interacting with standard hadronic cross sections are not the primary driver for elliptic flow development. The v(2) values for (d)d suggest that elliptic flow is additive for composite particles.

Photolysis or discharge excitation was initiated inside a short reaction tube attached to the outlet of a pulsed valve. Bath gas temperatures near 100 K were achieved in the reaction tube by the constrained expansion of the gas mixture into the tube, simulating temperatures of relevance in Titan's atmosphere.

The theory that increasing cancer incidence rates in developed countries are primarily the consequence of an expanding ageing population and improved diagnostic testing is widely held. In the United Kingdom the proportion of people aged 50 and over has increased by 45% since 1951 and this proportion is set to increase by a further 36% by the year 2031, so the United Kingdom does indeed have an expanding ageing population. However, the increase in cancer incidence affects people across the whole age spectrum.

For KE T identical with mT-m up to approximately 1 GeV the scaling is compatible with hydrodynamic expansion of a thermalized fluid. For large values of KE T mesons and baryons scale separately.

The source extension cannot be explained solely by simple kinematic considerations.

In Western countries, expansion and ageing of the population, as well as progress in cancer detection using new diagnostic and screening tests cannot fully account for the observed growing incidence of cancer. Our hypothesis is that environmental factors play a more important role in cancer genesis than it is usually agreed: i) over the last 2-3 decades, alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking in men have significantly decreased; ii) obesity is increasing in many countries, but the growing incidence of cancer also concerns cancers not related to obesity nor to other lifestyle-related factors; iii) there is evidence that the environment has changed over the same time scale as the recent rise in cancer incidence, and that this change included the accumulation of many new carcinogenic factors in the environment; iv) genetic susceptibility to cancer due to genetic polymorphism cannot have changed over one generation and actually favours the role of exogenous factors through gene-environment interactions; v) age is not the unique factor to be considered since the rising incidence of cancers is seen across all age categories, including children; vi) the fetus is specifically vulnerable to exogenous factors.

Rats were trained to respond for 4% beer in one context (A), extinguished in a different (B) context, and then tested for responding in the original training context (A) or the extinction context (B). ABA renewal was mediated by D1 dopamine receptors because it was prevented by SCH23390.

We also report on the effect of requiring the photons to be isolated from parton jet energy.
