The current therapy study with 50 patients showed that a reversible down regulation of the ovaries is possible. Particularly in cases with severe endometriosis a rapid release of pain can usually be achieved. Further development of the disease could be prevented and in two third of the cases even a partial reduction of tumor size.

Twenty-six women, most of them with advanced endometriosis (Stage III according to Acosta), were treated for six months with the LH-RH agonist Buserelin. After initially increased liberation both of the gonadotropins as well as of the sexual steroids there was consecutive inhibition of gonadal function, especially after inhibition of FSH secretion. Within two to four weeks estradiol production was completely and lastingly suppressed in 21 of the 26 women.

double-blind cross-over study with Org OD 14 was done in 35 post-menopausal patients aged 48-69 years who had hot flushes and other associated symptoms. Patients were randomly allocated to Org OD 14 or to placebo as first treatment. Each period of treatment lasted for 6 weeks and there were no intervals between treatments.

The histological findings of the endometrial biopsy specimen (n = 109) were correlated with the hormonal profiles and the bleeding pattern. There was an evident dose-related inhibition of ovulation or corpus luteum integrity.

Ovulation was inhibited in 136 out of 156 treatment months. In 20 treatment months, progesterone values temporarily increased indicating luteinization of follicles or ovulation with defective corpus luteum function.

A specific, sensitive, and rapid radioreceptor assay (RRA), employing membranes from bovine testes as receptor and [125I]hLH as radioligand, has been developed for measurement of human LH in serum. This RRA was used to determine the time of ovulation in seven women. For comparison, four hourly values around midcycle were measured by RIA.

A new tissue-selective prostaglandin E2-derivate, 16-Phenoxy-prostaglandin E2-methansulfonamide (SH B 286) developed by Pfizer, USA, and Schering, Germany, has been investigated as abortifacient using the intrauterine as well as intravenous route of application. Vital signs, intrauterine pressure, serum levels of steroid hormones, hPL and hCG were recorded before, during and after administration of Pg SH B 286. By using 100--250 microgram Pg SH 286 extraamniotically abortion rates reached 80%.

The lactotrophic hormone prolactin is necessary for the growth of the milk producing system, initiation and maintenance of lactation. Inappropriate responsiveness of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-ovarian system causes independent of the actual prolactin serum values postpartum amenorrhea during early puerperium.

Nine treatment cycles were monitored indirectly with the cervical factor and hormonal cytology. The concomitant serum estradiol and progesterone values were later determined by radioimmunoassays.

LHM was tested in a double blind study compared to placebo.
