Facial approximation is a common tool utilised in forensic human identification. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging technologies allow researchers to go beyond traditional clay models to now create virtual computed models of anatomical structures. The goal of this study was to compare the accuracy of available methods of facial approximation ranging from clay modelling to advanced computer facial approximation techniques.

In view of the possibility of a human pandemic of avian influenza, a first-line strategy for many countries is stockpiling of antiviral neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir [Tamiflu] and zanamivir [Relenza]), which can reduce mortality, morbidity and influenza transmission. However, global supply of the antivirals is controlled by the European-based patent owners, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline. This prevents competition in the manufacturing and distribution of antivirals and has reduced global supply capacity and affordability.

On 1 January 2005, a controversial trade agreement entered into force between Australia and the United States. Though heralded by the parties as facilitating the removal of barriers to free trade (in ways not achievable in multilateral fora), it also contained many trade-restricting intellectual property provisions and others uniquely related to altering pharmaceutical regulation and public health policy in Australia. Phenylacetylglycine, a putative biomarker of phospholipidosis: its origins and relevance to phospholipid accumulation using amiodarone treated rats as a model.

Amiodarone was given to male Sprague-Dawley rats at a dose of 150 mg kg(-1) day(-1) for 7 consecutive days to induce phospholipidosis in the lungs of treated rats. Amiodarone was given alone or concurrently with phenobarbitone. Animals given amiodarone had raised total phospholipid in serum, lung and lymphocytes, and elevated lyso(bis)phosphatidic acid (LBPA) in all tissues.

Characterisation of a potential biomarker of phospholipidosis from amiodarone-treated rats.

A novel and relatively simple analytical method for the separation, characterisation and semi-quantitation of phospholipids (PLs) from extracts of complex biological samples has been developed. When seen, the patients are usually very apprehensive and present difficult decisions regarding treatment and surgery, especially with regard to anesthetic considerations.

Evaluations of genotypexenvironment interactions of beef bulls performance-tested in feedlot or pasture.

Purebred Angus (n = 96) and Polled Hereford (n = 96) bull calves sired by bulls of either low or high yearling weight performance lines were assigned to either creep-fed or non-creep-fed treatment before weaning for four calf crops. For each breed, after weaning in the fall, half of the calves within each of the four groups were fed a high concentrate diet for 189 d after weaning in a feedlot and the remainder were put on winter temporary pastures (rye or ryegrass) followed by summer grazing on pearl millet and bermudagrass pastures for 329 d after weaning. Dependent variables were ADG for various intervals and the complete test period, weight, height and scrotal circumference at periodic intervals, and weight per day of age at regular intervals during the test.

Principal component analysis of mass spectra of peptides generated from the tryptic digestion of protein mixtures.

Principal component analysis (PCA) has been used to analyse mass spectral peptide profiles obtained from the enzymatic digestion of standard protein mixtures. Scores and loadings plots clearly revealed peptide fragments that differentiated one protein mixture from another. Peptide map search results identified with a high degree of certainty any additional proteins in these mixtures.

The beta-amyloid (Abeta) peptide, a major component of senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease brain, has been shown previously to undergo a process of polymerization to produce neurotoxic forms of amyloid. Recent literature has attempted to define precisely the form of Abeta responsible for its neurodegenerative properties. In the present study we describe a novel density-gradient centrifugation method for the isolation and characterization of structurally distinct polymerized forms of Abeta peptide.

Medical evidence concerning the suitability to succeed to the tenancy of a farm: the case of 'toad of toad hall'.

A hill farmer applied to succeed to the tenancy of his farm on the death of his mother who had leased the farm from his maternal aunt. As landlord, she opposed the application which was heard at an Agricultural Land Tribunal (ALT) convened under the provisions of the Agricultural Holdings Act, 1986. Leptin acts on the brain to inhibit feeding, increase thermogenesis, and decrease body weight. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-ergic neurons of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) that project to the paraventricular nuclei (PVN) and dorsomedial nuclei (DMH) are postulated to control energy balance by stimulating feeding and inhibiting thermogenesis, especially under conditions of energy deficit. We investigated whether leptin's short-term effects on energy balance are mediated by inhibition of the NPY neurons.

Simple differentiation between core-fucosylated and nonfucosylated glycans by capillary electrophoresis.

Core-fucosylated glycans, derivatized with 2-aminoacridone, consistently migrate slower than the corresponding oligosaccharides which lack this fucose residue, using the micellar electrophoretic capillary chromatography conditions outlined in this study. alpha-Fucosidase digestion of glycans followed by CE analysis has allowed facile differentiation of these two classes of oligosaccharides and this methodology has been applied to obtain preliminary information on the carbohydrate content from two glycoproteins, a monoclonal IgG antibody and the soluble complement receptor type 1 (sCR1).

Conformation of the cytoplasmic domain of phospholamban by NMR and CD.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy have been used to characterize the conformation of the putative cytoplasmic domain of phospholamban (PLB), an oligomeric membrane-bound protein which regulates the activity of the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-dependent ATPase. In aqueous solution the 25-residue peptide adopts a number of rapidly interconverting conformers with no secondary structural type obviously predominating. However, in trifluoroethanol (TFE) the conformation, while still highly dynamic, is characterized by a high proportion of helical structures.

Electrophoretic techniques for the analysis of synthetic amyloid beta-A4-related peptides.

Two electrophoretic techniques have been developed for the analysis of synthetic beta-A4 related peptides. The first is an acetic acid--urea--polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis denaturing system while the second employs capillary zone electrophoresis at pH 7. Both methods were calibrated to identify the state (monomeric or aggregate) of the longer amyloid fragments beta-A4(1-40) and beta-A4(1-43) during analysis.

Demographic aging is examined in selected countries of east and Southeast Asia. "Among the 10 countries discussed in this article, there is a wide range of experience in the process of aging from the advanced stage reached by Japan to the incipient stage evident in the Philippines. Although the direction of age structural shift in these countries is consistent throughout, earlier patterns of fertility, mortality and migration dictate differing effects over the 50-year period, 1970-2020.

Subsequent reproduction and calf performance of nonpregnant cows compared with pregnant cows and replacement females.

This study was conducted with Angus, Polled Hereford and Santa Gertrudis straightbred and crossbred cows. The subsequent cow breeding and calf performance of cows that were nonpregnant (NP) were compared with cows that were pregnant (PG) at the time calves were weaned. All NP cows had a calf the year previous to their being nonpregnant.
