Gastroparesis is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by significant prolongation of gastric emptying time caused by impaired motility of the stomach. Its estimated prevalence is 24.2 per 100 000 people.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNeurofibromatosis type (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized predominantly by neurocutaneous manifestations. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is uncommon but is associated with a significant risk of malignancy. There are a handful of case reports linking NF-1 with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors; these include gastrin-secreting variants with the attendant Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

We discuss a woman aged 60 years who presented with a 2-month history of recurrent severe constant epigastric pain. Abdominal examination revealed massive hepatomegaly and a CT scan of the liver confirmed coarse liver lesions.

We aimed to validate the functional fibrinogen thromboelastography assay (FF-TEG) and propose a new model to estimate fibrinogen levels via the Clauss method (Clauss) using data from a prothrombin time-derived fibrinogen assay (PT-Fg) in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Background/aims: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding provides enteral nutrition to patients with neurological dysphagia. Thirty-day mortality rates of 4-26% have been reported, with pneumonia being the common cause post-percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy insertion.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective analysis of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube insertions in Malta (January 2008 - June 2010) compares the incidence of pneumonia in patients fed through a nasogastric tube versus in those fed via a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube.
Background: Cytologic diagnosis by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration is associated with low sensitivity and adequacy. A newly designed endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy device, endowed with a side fenestration, is now available.
Aims: We carried out a study with the aim of evaluating the feasibility, safety, and diagnostic yield of the 22-gauge needle with side fenestration for endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration and biopsy of pancreatic cystic lesions.

Background And Aims: There is limited data on the risk of developing diarrhoea in travelling patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We analysed the rate of developing diarrhoea among travellers suffering from IBD and their healthy controls.
Methods: We performed a retrospective case-controlled study among 78 patients with IBD and their healthy travelling companion controls, thus matching both groups to the same environmental conditions.
Background: We analyzed the characteristics associated with increased risk of osteoporosis in patients with Crohn's disease in Malta.
Method: Eighty-three patients with histologically and endoscopically confirmed Crohn's disease underwent a DEXA bone density scan and their phenotypic characteristics were analyzed.
Results: There was a significant association between body mass index and bone mineral density (P = 0.
Any process that substantially diminishes arterial blood flow or arterial oxygen content to the liver can result in hypoxic (ischaemic) hepatitis. 90% of hypoxic hepatitis occurs in unstable patients in intensive care units with haemodynamic failure secondary to heart failure, respiratory failure and toxic shock. The rate of in-hospital mortality in hypoxic hepatitis is very high with studies recording mortalities of 61.

Adequate management of such stomas might prevent severe morbidity and mortality when this potentially fatal complication develops. In this case report, we describe a female patient with a recent ileostomy formation following panproctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis who presented with progressively increasing shortness of breath.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA young lady with a long history of recurrent infections was referred to the gastroenterology department by an infectious disease consultant because of a long history of profuse diarrhoea. A nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) test performed in her mid-teens had shown zero reduction of the dye. The clinical, biochemical, radiological and endoscopic findings were suggestive of possible underlying Crohn's disease.
