A randomized clinical trial comparing meglumine antimoniate, pentamidine and amphotericin B for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis by Leishmania guyanensis.

Fundamentals: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) treatment remains a challenge, since most available drugs are injectable and only a small number of comparative, randomized clinical trials have been performed to support their use. Moreover, treatment outcome may depend on the causative species of Leishmania.

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the efficacy and tolerability of meglumine antimoniate, pentamidine isethionate, and amphotericin B in the treatment of ATL caused by Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis.

Evolutionary insights from bat trypanosomes: morphological, developmental and phylogenetic evidence of a new species, Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) erneyi sp. nov., in African bats closely related to Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) cruzi and allied species.

Parasites of the genus Trypanosoma are common in bats and those of the subgenus Schizotrypanum are restricted to bats throughout the world, with the exception of Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) cruzi that also infects other mammals and is restricted to the American Continent. We have characterized trypanosome isolates from Molossidae bats captured in Mozambique, Africa. Morphology and behaviour in culture, supported by phylogenetic inferences using SSU (small subunit) rRNA, gGAPDH (glycosomal glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase) and Cyt b (cytochrome b) genes, allowed to classify the isolates as a new Schizotrypanum species named Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) erneyi sp.

Evaluation of the voltage quantities measured with different noninvasive meters for quality control at a calibration laboratory.

In this work the peak kilovoltage (kVp), practical peak voltage (PPV) and air kerma rate were measured with the noninvasive meters Radcal Accu-kV® Diagnostic Sensor™ model 40×12-W, and PTW Diavolt. The results were compared in order to ensure the quality control, compare the meters and establish the new quantity PPV, at the Calibration Laboratory of IPEN. These tests were performed using the standard diagnostic radiology quality beam RQR5, and the results are in good agreement.

Characterization of an extrapolation chamber for low-energy X-rays: experimental and Monte Carlo preliminary results.

The extrapolation chamber is a parallel-plate ionization chamber that allows variation of its air-cavity volume. In this work, an experimental study and MCNP-4C Monte Carlo code simulations of an ionization chamber designed and constructed at the Calibration Laboratory at IPEN to be used as a secondary dosimetry standard for low-energy X-rays are reported. The results obtained were within the international recommendations, and the simulations showed that the components of the extrapolation chamber may influence its response up to 11.

Occurrence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in cattle and pigs slaughtered, State of Rio de Janeiro.

Characterization of a homemade ionization chamber for radiotherapy beams.

A homemade cylindrical ionization chamber was studied for routine use in therapy beams of (60)Co and X-rays. Several characterization tests were performed: leakage current, saturation, ion collection efficiency, polarity effect, stability, stabilization time, chamber orientation and energy dependence. All results obtained were within international recommendations.

Characterization of a CT ionization chamber for radiation field mapping.

A pencil-type ionization chamber, developed at Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN), was characterized with the objective to verify the possibility of its application in radiation field mapping procedures. The characterization tests were evaluated, and the results were satisfactory. The results obtained for the X radiation field mapping with the homemade chamber were compared with those of a PTW Farmer-type chamber (TN 30011-1).

Decidualized pseudopregnant rat uterus shows marked reduction in Ang II and Ang-(1-7) levels.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the regulation of the RAS in the decidualized uterus in the pseudopregnant rat, a model without the presence of a conceptus.

Methods: Ovariectomized, adult female rats were sensitized for the decidual cell reaction with steroid treatments; decidualization was induced by oil-injection of the right horn; the left horn served as a control.

Supported ionic liquid membranes for removal of dioxins from high-temperature vapor streams.

Dioxins and dioxin-like chemicals are predominantly produced by thermal processes such as incineration and combustion at concentrations in the range of 10-100 ng of I-TEQ/kg (I-TEQ = international toxic equivalents). In this work, a new approach for the removal of dioxins from high-temperature vapor streams using facilitated supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs) is proposed. The use of ceramic membranes containing specific ionic liquids, with extremely low volatility, for dioxin removal from incineration sources is proposed owing to their stability at very high temperatures.

Identification of common and cell type specific LXXLL motif EcR cofactors using a bioinformatics refined candidate RNAi screen in Drosophila melanogaster cell lines.

Background: During Drosophila development, titers of the steroid ecdysone trigger and maintain temporal and tissue specific biological transitions. Decades of evidence reveal that the ecdysone response is both unique to specific tissues and distinct among developmental timepoints. To achieve this diversity in response, the several isoforms of the Ecdysone Receptor, which transduce the hormone signal to the genome level, are believed to interact with tissue specific cofactors.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic disease characterized by sustained elevation of pulmonary arterial pressure that leads to right ventricle failure and death. Pulmonary resistance arterioles in PAH undergo progressive narrowing and/or occlusion. Currently approved therapies for PAH are directed primarily at relief of symptoms by interfering with vasoconstrictive signals, but do not halt the microvascular cytoproliferative process.

Fractal dimension in quantifying the degree of myocardial cellular rejection after cardiac transplantation.

Proton NMR relaxometry study of Nafion membranes modified with ionic liquid cations.

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry was used to study the ionic mobility and levels of confinement within Nafion membranes modified by incorporation of selected ionic liquid (IL) cations. These studies were performed aiming at understanding the effect of using different types of ionic liquid cations, and their degree of incorporation, in the values of the spin-lattice relaxation times (T(1)) obtained at different values of frequency and thus detect the influence of confinement level on the ions mobility. The frequency dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation rate, R(1) = 1/T(1), for the modified Nafion/IL cation membranes was compared with that obtained for an unmodified Nafion membrane, allowing for distinguishing different contributions of the motions of the molecules depending on the frequency tested.

Human and porcine Taenia solium infections in Mozambique: identifying research priorities.

The objective of this paper is to critically review and summarize available scientific and lay literature, and ongoing studies on human and porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique to identify knowledge gaps and direct immediate and long-term research efforts. Data on the spatial distribution and prevalence of the disease in human and swine populations are scarce and fragmented. Human serological studies have shown that 15-21% of apparently healthy adults were positive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen, while in neuropsychiatric patients seroprevalence was as high as 51%.

Changes in adiposity status from childhood to adolescence: a 6-year longitudinal study in Portuguese boys and girls.

Background: Cross-sectional data show high prevalence of overweight in Portuguese children, but there are few longitudinal studies describing the patterns of obesity development in the young.

Aim: To examine the trajectories of obesity from late childhood to adolescence.

Subjects And Methods: Triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness measurements were carried out in 288 children at age 9 (baseline) and later at age 15 (follow-up).

A high-density transcript linkage map with 1,845 expressed genes positioned by microarray-based Single Feature Polymorphisms (SFP) in Eucalyptus.

Background: Technological advances are progressively increasing the application of genomics to a wider array of economically and ecologically important species. High-density maps enriched for transcribed genes facilitate the discovery of connections between genes and phenotypes. We report the construction of a high-density linkage map of expressed genes for the heterozygous genome of Eucalyptus using Single Feature Polymorphism (SFP) markers.

Low-level laser therapy on the viability of skin flap in rats subjected to deleterious effect of nicotine.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 830-nm laser in blocking the action of nicotine on the viability of skin flap.

Background Data: The authors have analyzed the deleterious effect of cigarette smoke or nicotine on the skin flap alone with evidence of increased skin necrosis in the flap.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-four Wistar-albino rats were divided into three groups of eight animals each: Group 1 (control), subjected to a surgical technique to obtain a flap for cranial base, laser irradiation simulation, and a subcutaneous injection of saline; Group 2, similar to Group 1, with subcutaneous injection of nicotine (2  mg/kg/day) for a period of 1 week before and 1 week after surgery; and Group 3, similar to Group 2, with skin flaps subjected to a λ 830-nm laser irradiation.

Molecular findings in childhood leukemia in Brazil: high frequency of MLL-ENL Fusion/t(11;19) in infant leukemia.

Translocations involving chromosome 11q23 are frequently found in pediatric leukemia, especially in infants. The mixed lineage leukemia (MLL)-AF4 fusion/t(4;11) is mostly found in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and MLL-AF9 fusion/t(9;11) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We study 441 consecutive new cases of childhood leukemia diagnosed in Brazil.

Experimental quantum tomography of photonic qudits via mutually unbiased basis.

We present the experimental quantum tomography of 7- and 8-dimensional quantum systems based on projective measurements in the mutually unbiased basis (MUB-QT). One of the advantages of MUB-QT is that it requires projections from a minimal number of bases to be performed. In our scheme, the higher dimensional quantum systems are encoded using the propagation modes of single photons, and we take advantage of the capabilities of amplitude- and phase-modulation of programmable spatial light modulators to implement the MUB-QT.

[Compliance with the treatment by patients with the co-infection HIV/tuberculosis: integrative literature review].

This is an integrative review whose objective was to evaluate the evidences available in the literature about the factors associated to the compliance with the treatment by patients with the co-infection HIV/TB. Articles published in the period from 2002 to 2008, in the databases LILACS and MEDLINE were analyzed. The material was categorized according to the year of publication, periodical, study location and factors related to the compliance.

Enzyme prodrug therapy designed to target L-methioninase to the tumor vasculature.

A new approach for enzyme prodrug therapy for cancer was tested using human endothelial cells and two breast cancer cell lines in vitro. The concept is to use the human annexin V protein to selectively target the enzyme L-methioninase to the tumor vasculature. The major finding was that enzyme prodrug treatment using the L-methioninase-annexin V fusion protein and selenomethionine as the prodrug over 3 days was shown to be lethal to the endothelial cells and the cancer cells, while having little or no effect with the prodrug but with no fusion protein present.

Abundance of jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) affects group characteristics and use of space by golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) in Cabruca agroforest.

Cabruca is an agroforest of cacao trees shaded by native forest trees. It is the predominant vegetation type throughout eastern part of the range of the golden-headed lion tamarins, Leontopithecus chrysomelas, an endangered primate endemic to Atlantic Forest. Understanding how lion tamarins use this agroforest is a conservation priority.
