Background: Nance-Horan syndrome (NHS) is a rare, frequently underdiagnosed, X-linked disease caused by mutations in the NHS gene. In males, it causes bilateral dense pediatric cataracts, dental anomalies, and facial dysmorphisms. Females traditionally have a more subtle phenotype with discrete lens opacities as an isolated feature.

Background: Brazilian spotted fever is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, whose main vector in Brazil is the tick Amblyomma sculptum. Amplifying hosts are essential for the perpetuation of this bacterium in the tick population as they can be sources of infection during bacteremic periods. Recent studies demonstrated the ability of suids (Sus scrofa) to sustain populations of A.

Therefore, we assessed the effect of physical activity versus absence of physical activity on markers of oxidative stress and antioxidants in cancer patients.
Methods: We looked for randomized controlled trials that included adult with any type of cancer performing some physical activity and compared them to a control group of cancer patients with no physical activity.
Periodontitis, an oral disease initiated by a dysbiotic dental biofilm, has an unclear response to photobiomodulation (PBM) as an adjunctive treatment. This study investigates the effects of PBM on reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers in a periodontitis model using C57BL/6 mice, divided into four groups: control (C), control + PBM (C + PBM), periodontitis (P), and periodontitis + PBM (P + PBM). An infrared diode laser (808 nm, 133.

Two subspecies have been recognized, but their names, validity, and geographic ranges have been controversial. We obtained samples covering the species' entire distribution in Brazil and Argentina to clarify these issues by investigating their genetic diversity and structure and assessing their evolutionary history.

Background: Autoimmune limbic encephalitis (ALE) is a rare inflammatory disorder characterised by a subacute onset, usually within weeks. The presence of multiple neuropsychiatric symptoms such as seizures, short-term memory deficits, anxiety and depression often leads to misdiagnosis as another medical condition, contributing to poor prognosis and reduced long-term survival.
Case Description: A 60-year-old man, with no chronic illnesses, presented at the emergency department with daily episodes of palpitations, shivering, piloerection and a sense of impending doom lasting two months.
Among the parasitic and infectious diseases affecting cats, those caused by vector-borne pathogens deserve attention due to their ability to cause nonspecific clinical signs and clinicopathological abnormalities. We studied the presence of spp., spp.

PDMS-based biomodels are widely used in blood flow studies, offering a platform for improving flow models and validating numerical simulations. This review highlights recent advances in bioflow studies conducted using both PDMS microfluidic devices and macroscale biomodels, particularly in replicating physiological environments.

The autonomic response over a training course is unclear in exercises performed at high intensities, such as kettlebell training. The study aimed to characterize the cardiac autonomic modulation after exercise in three distinct phases of a high-intensity kettlebell training program in young women.

Catastrophic spending resulting from increased expenses and reduced income must be taken into account, whether due to unemployment, a reduction in the number of hours worked or the difficulty of entering or reentering the job market. Given this scenario, the main objective of this study was to estimate the catastrophic spending attributed to the caregiver of blind or low-vision children in reference centers for education for the blind, ophthalmology and child health located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, identifying which factors are associated with a higher or lower prevalence of this expenditure.
