The mechanical properties of brain and spinal cord tissue have proven to be extremely complex and difficult to assess. Due to the heterogeneous and ultra-soft nature of the tissue, the available literature shows a large variance in mechanical parameters derived from experiments. In this study, we performed a series of indentation experiments to systematically investigate the mechanical properties of porcine spinal cord tissue in terms of their sensitivity to indentation tip diameter, loading rate, holding time, ambient temperature along with cyclic and oscillatory dynamic loading.

Automation of DNA and RNA library preparation workflows offers the possibility to scale-up and standardize sample processing. We report on the clinical implementation of the automated TruSight Oncology 500 High-Throughput library preparation workflow from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor samples using the Biomek i7 hybrid Workstation.

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using a novel handheld tomographic ultrasound for 3D mapping of the anophthalmic socket.
Methods: Ten anophthalmic sockets were scanned using a tomographic ultrasound system and the results were compared to CT scanned impression molds from the same sockets.
Background: The determinants of the response to checkpoint immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain poorly understood. The organisation of the immune response in the tumour microenvironment (TME) is expected to govern immunotherapy outcomes but spatial immunotypes remain poorly defined.
Objective: We hypothesised that the deconvolution of spatial immune network architectures could identify clinically relevant immunotypes in HCC.
Background/aims: It is unclear whether a reduction in tear secretion contributes to the discomfort experienced by those with prosthetic eyes. Tear secretion has hitherto only been measured with the Schirmer test which may be affected by the pooling of tears behind the prosthesis. In this study, direct imaging of the lacrimal gland has been performed to measure tear secretion in anophthalmic sockets.

The goal of this study is to examine factors that influence access to fertility specialists for women with newly diagnosed gynecologic cancer. This institutional review board approved a retrospective cohort study investigating the impacting factors on the referral rate from gynecologic oncologists (GO) to reproductive endocrinologists and infertility (REI) specialists at a single academic institution between 2010-2022 for patients age 18-41 at diagnosis.

Methods: The study cohort included 713 consecutive immunotherapy patients with advanced lung adenocarcinomas, negative for actionable genetic alterations.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute a class of universally prevalent carcinogenic environmental contaminants. It is increasingly recognized, however, that PAHs derivatized with oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen functional groups are frequently more dangerous than their unfunctionalized counterparts. This much larger family of chemicals─polycyclic aromatic compounds─PACs─is far less well characterized than PAHs.

However, the many different types of nanoparticles or nanostructured metallic SERS substrates created over the past few decades show substantial variability in the SERS spectra they provide. These inconsistencies have even raised speculation that substrate-specific SERS spectral libraries must be compiled for practical use of this type of spectroscopy.

Observational and interventional studies have shown that decision-making based on comprehensive molecular characterization adds significant clinical value. However, the complexity and heterogeneity of the resulting data are major challenges for disciplines involved in interpretation and recommendations for individualized care, and limited information exists on how to approach multilayered tumor profiles in clinical routine.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA growing number of druggable targets and national initiatives for precision oncology necessitate broad genomic profiling for many cancer patients. Whole exome sequencing (WES) offers unbiased analysis of the entire coding sequence, segmentation-based detection of copy number alterations (CNAs), and accurate determination of complex biomarkers including tumor mutational burden (TMB), homologous recombination repair deficiency (HRD), and microsatellite instability (MSI). To assess the inter-institution variability of clinical WES, we performed a comparative pilot study between German Centers of Personalized Medicine (ZPMs) from five participating institutions.

Here we report on the prevalence of rare fusions in NSCLC and dissect their genomic architecture and potential clinical implications.
Materials And Methods: Overall, n = 5554 NSCLC patients underwent next-generation sequencing (NGS) for combined detection of oncogenic mutations and fusions either at primary diagnosis (n = 5246) or after therapy resistance (n = 308).
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of the augmented reality (AR) app "Negami" as an active exploration training for the treatment of spatial neglect. Improvements of the ipsilesional attention and orientation bias (and resulting contralesional neglect) will be examined in stroke patients with spatial neglect and compared with a control group.
Design: Randomized controlled trial with an experimental Negami group, consisting of patients with spatial neglect, and a group of neglect patients receiving standard neglect therapy.
Purpose: Automated perimetry provides a standardized method of measuring the visual field. The Humphrey Field Analyser (HFA) uses the 24-2 test pattern to cover 24 degrees centrally or the 30-2 test pattern to cover a slightly broader region of 30 degrees. The aim of this study was to determine whether the 24-2 test pattern provides comparable information to the 30-2 test pattern in detecting visual field defects in patients with tumours in the pituitary region.

Screening for aneuploidy in twins presents unique challenges compared with singletons. Cell-free DNA screening should be considered first-line; however, this option may not be available or may have limitations in certain clinical scenarios, such as vanishing twins.

HRD scores have entered routine diagnostics, but the influence of algorithms, parameters and confounders has not been analyzed comprehensively. A series of 100 poorly differentiated ovarian carcinoma samples was analyzed using whole exome sequencing (WES) and genotyping.

Priority pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), detectable in water and soil worldwide and known to induce multiple adverse health effects upon human exposure, are typically found in multicomponent mixtures. By combining the molecular fingerprinting capabilities of SERS with the signal separation and detection capabilities of machine learning (ML), we examine whether individual PAHs can be identified through an analysis of the SERS spectra of multicomponent PAH mixtures.
