Atomically precise clusters such as [Pt(CO)(PPh)] ( = 1,2) (PPh is triphenylphosphine) are known as precursors for making oxidation catalysts. However, the changes occurring to the cluster upon thermal activation during the formation of the active catalyst are poorly understood. We have used a combination of hybrid mass spectrometry and surface science to map the thermal decomposition of [Pt(CO)(PPh)](NO).

Small differences in the structure and subsequent reactivity of glyphosate complexes can have a highly consequential impact due to the enormous quantities of glyphosate used globally. The gas phase metal speciation of glyphosate and its abundant metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), were determined using cross-platform electrospray ionisation ion mobility mass spectrometry. Monomeric [M + L - H] complexes, and both larger, and/or higher order clusters formed with divalent metals (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Co, Cu, and Zn; and L = glyphosate and AMPA).

Tissue hypoxia is associated with the development of organ dysfunction and death in critically ill patients commonly captured using blood lactate. The kinetic parameters of serial lactate evaluations are superior at predicting mortality compared with single values. S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), which is also associated with hypoxia, was recently established as a useful predictor of septic organ dysfunction and death.

Subnanometer clusters with precise atom numbers hold immense potential for applications in catalysis, as single atoms can significantly impact catalytic properties. Typically, inorganic clusters are produced using batch processes with high dilutions, making the scale-up of these processes time-consuming and its reproducibility challenging. While continuous-flow systems have been employed for organic synthesis and, more recently, nanoparticle preparation, these approaches have only rarely been applied to cluster synthesis.

Collision-induced dissociation and high-resolution cyclic ion mobility mass spectrometry, along with quantum chemical calculations and trajectory simulations, were used to compare the structures of isolated [MAu(CCR)], M = Ni, Pd, or Pt, and their associated fragment ions. The three different alkynyl ligand-stabilized (CCR, R = 3,5-(CF)CH), transition metal-doped, gold cluster dianions showed mutually resolvable collision cross sections (CCS), which were ordered consistently with their molecular structures from X-ray crystallography. All three [MAu(CCR)] species fragment by sequential diyne loss to form [MAu(CCR)], with up to 12.

Background: The aim of the rapid introduction of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic was a reduction in SARS-CoV-2 transmission and a less frequent occurrence of severe COVID-19 courses. Thus, we evaluated COVID-19 severity in vaccinated individuals to examine variant-specific symptom characteristics and their clinical impact on the serological immune response.

Methods: A total of 185 individuals previously vaccinated against and infected with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta (B.

Vacancy defects are known to have significant effects on the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. However, the formation and structural dynamics of vacancy defects in atomically precise coinage metal clusters have hardly been explored due to the challenges associated with isolation of such defected clusters. Herein, we isolate [Ag(BDT)] (BDT is 1,3-benzenedithiol), a cluster with a "missing atom" site compared to [Ag(BDT)], whose precise structure is known from X-ray diffraction.

This report demonstrates a novel class of innate immune cells designated "variable immunoreceptor-expressing myeloids" (VIREMs). Using single-cell transcriptomics and genome-wide epigenetic profiling, we establish that VIREMs are myeloid cells unrelated to lymphocytes. We visualize the phenotype of B-VIREMs that are capable of genetically recombining and expressing antibody genes, the exclusive hallmark function of B lymphocytes.

Mechanically ventilated patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) frequently receive aerosolized iloprost. Because of prostacyclin's short half-life, prolonged inhalative administration might improve its clinical efficacy. But, this is technically challenging.

A common final pathway of pathogenetic mechanisms in septic organ dysfunction and death is a lack or non-utilization of oxygen. Plasma concentrations of lactate serve as surrogates for the oxygen-deficiency-induced imbalance between energy supply and demand. As S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) was shown to reflect tissue hypoxia, we compared the ability of SAH versus lactate to predict the progression of inflammatory and septic disease to septic organ dysfunction and death.

Background: Severe courses and high hospitalization rates were ubiquitous during the first pandemic SARS-CoV-2 waves. Thus, we aimed to examine whether integrative diagnostics may aid in identifying vulnerable patients using crucial data and materials obtained from COVID-19 patients hospitalized between 2020 and 2021 ( = 52). Accordingly, we investigated the potential of laboratory biomarkers, specifically the dynamic cell decay marker cell-free DNA and radiomics features extracted from chest CT.

Enormous recent progress in diagnostic testing can enable more accurate diagnosis and improved clinical outcomes. Yet these tests are increasingly challenging and frustrating; the volume and diversity of results may overwhelm the diagnostic acumen of even the most dedicated and experienced clinician. Because they are gathered and processed within the "silo" of each diagnostic discipline, diagnostic data are fragmented, and the electronic health record does little to synthesize new and existing data into usable information.

Background: Longitudinal humoral SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2) immunity for up to 15 months due to vaccination, the efficacy of vaccination strategies (homologous, vector-vector versus heterologous, vector-mRNA), the influence of vaccination side effects, and the infection rate in German healthcare workers need to be investigated.

Methods: In this study, 103 individuals vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 were enrolled to examine their anti-SARS-CoV-2 anti-N- and anti-RBD/S1-Ig levels. A total of 415 blood samples in lithium heparin tubes were prospectively obtained, and a structured survey regarding medical history, type of vaccine, and vaccination reactions was conducted.

Cyclodextrin (CD) macrocycles are used to create a wide range of supramolecular architectures which are also of interest in applications such as selective gas adsorption, drug delivery, and catalysis. However, predicting their assemblies and identifying the possible isomers in CD oligomers have always remained challenging due to their dynamic nature. Herein, we interacted CDs (α, β, and γ) with a divalent metal ion, Cu, to create a series of Cu-linked CD oligomers, from dimers to pentamers.

Limited response rates and frequent relapses during standard of care with hypomethylating agents in myelodysplastic neoplasms (MN) require urgent improvement of this treatment indication. Here, by combining 5-azacytidine (5-AZA) with the pan-lysyl oxidase inhibitor PXS-5505, we demonstrate superior restoration of erythroid differentiation in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) of MN patients in 20/31 cases (65%) versus 9/31 cases (29%) treated with 5-AZA alone. This effect requires direct contact of HSPCs with bone marrow stroma components and is dependent on integrin signaling.

Article Synopsis
  • The EU Diagnostic Device Regulation (IVDR) emphasizes risk-based validation, traceability, and post-market monitoring of diagnostic devices while excluding medical services based on these devices.
  • Laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) can be used when commercial devices are unavailable, subjecting them to specific performance and safety guidelines under an ISO 15189-equivalent quality system.
  • The IVDR may lead to the disappearance of some commercial tests, necessitating urgent LDT replacements, while raising concerns about the potential loss of niche medical applications and increased costs within healthcare systems.
