Photonics offers a promising platform for quantum computing, owing to the availability of chip integration for mass-manufacturable modules, fibre optics for networking and room-temperature operation of most components. However, experimental demonstrations are needed of complete integrated systems comprising all basic functionalities for universal and fault-tolerant operation. Here we construct a (sub-performant) scale model of a quantum computer using 35 photonic chips to demonstrate its functionality and feasibility.

This report delineates the intricate diagnostic journey and therapeutic conundrum presented by a 61-year-old male who exhibited atypical neurological deterioration shortly after lumbar fusion surgery, manifesting clinical and radiological features suggestive of pseudohypoxic encephalopathy, an entity characterized by symptoms mimicking cerebral hypoxia in the absence of a discernible hypoxic insult. Following an initially unremarkable recovery from an elaborate spinal surgery, the patient's postoperative condition was confounded by a perplexing decline in consciousness, unresponsive to conventional therapeutic interventions and devoid of clear etiological indicators on standard neuroimaging. The subsequent diagnostic odyssey unraveled a cerebrospinal fluid leak as the putative reason, positing a nuanced clinical paradigm wherein the cerebrospinal fluid leak engendered a state mimicking pseudohypoxic brain swelling.

We present the Python Red Pitaya Lockbox (PyRPL), an open source software package that allows the implementation of automatic digital feedback controllers for quantum optics experiments on commercially available, affordable Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) boards. Our software implements the digital generation of various types of error signals, from an analog input through the application of loop filters of high complexity and real-time gain adjustment for multiple analog output signals, including different algorithms for resonance search, lock acquisition sequences, and in-loop gain optimization. Furthermore, all necessary diagnostic instruments, such as an oscilloscope, a network analyzer, and a spectrum analyzer, are integrated into our software.

The dynamic nature of the actin cytoskeleton is required to coordinate many cellular processes, and a loss of its plasticity has been linked to accelerated cell aging and attenuation of adaptive response mechanisms. Cofilin is an actin-binding protein that controls actin dynamics and has been linked to mitochondrial signaling pathways that control drug resistance and cell death. Here we show that cofilin-driven chronic depolarization of the actin cytoskeleton activates cell wall integrity mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling and disrupts lipid homeostasis in a voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC)-dependent manner.

A quantum computer attains computational advantage when outperforming the best classical computers running the best-known algorithms on well-defined tasks. No photonic machine offering programmability over all its quantum gates has demonstrated quantum computational advantage: previous machines were largely restricted to static gate sequences. Earlier photonic demonstrations were also vulnerable to spoofing, in which classical heuristics produce samples, without direct simulation, lying closer to the ideal distribution than do samples from the quantum hardware.

Although the exact knowledge of the binding energy of organic adsorbates on solid surfaces is of vital importance for the realization of molecular nanostructures and the theoretical modelling of molecule-substrate interactions, an experimental determination is by no means trivial. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) is a widely used technique that can provide such information, but a quantitative analysis requires detailed knowledge of the pre-exponential factor of desorption and is therefore rarely performed on a quantitative level for larger molecules that often exhibit notable mutual intermolecular interactions. Here, we provide a thorough anlysis of TPD data of monolayers of pentacene and perfluoropentacene adsorbed on Au(111) that serve as a model system for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on noble metal surfaces.

Generating laboratory flows resembling atmospheric turbulence is of prime importance to study the effect of wind fluctuations on objects such as buildings, vehicles, or wind turbines. A novel driving of an active grid following a stochastic process is used to generate velocity fluctuations with correlation lengths, and, thus, integral scales, much larger than the transverse dimension of the wind tunnel. The combined action of the active grid and a modulation of the fan speed allows one to generate a flow characterized by a four-decade inertial range and an integral scale Reynolds number of 2×10^{7}.

Objective: In trauma patients with potential cervical spine injury, immobilisation with a rigid cervical collar is widely recommended to prevent a secondary spinal cord injury. There is a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of this practice, but increasing evidence for complications from rigid collars. Soft foam collars may mitigate some of these issues and are used in our health service in place of rigid collars in selected patients at risk for traumatic cervical spine injury.

A new method of probing mechanical losses and comparing the corresponding deposition processes of metallic and dielectric coatings in 1-100 MHz frequency range and cryogenic temperatures is presented. The method is based on the use of high-quality quartz acoustic cavities whose internal losses are orders of magnitude lower than any available coating nowadays.
