The nuclear cap-binding complex (CBC) is a heterodimer composed of CBP20 and CBP80 subunits and has roles in the biogenesis of messenger RNAs (mRNAs), small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) and microRNAs. CBP20 is a phylogenetically conserved protein that interacts with the 7-methyl guanosine (m7G) cap added to the 5' end of all RNA polymerase II transcripts. CBP80 ensures high affinity binding of the cap by CBP20 and provides a platform for interactions with other factors.

The primary abnormality in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a defect in apoptosis, probably related to alterations in the expressions of Bcl-2 family members. In transgenic mice over expressing the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member, myeloid cell factor-1 (Mcl-1), B cell lymphomas occur. Research Design And Methods: The medical records of 55 Hispanic subjects with diabetes who were treated from 1990 to 1994 in a pediatric clinic serving lower income Mexican-Americans were reviewed to assess the frequency and clinical features of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, nondiabetic siblings of several patients underwent oral glucose tolerance testing, and a survey of six high schools in the same county was performed.

Oxygen consumption and 3H-guanosine diphosphate (GDP) binding were determined in brown adipocytes and mitochondria from 28-day gestation fetuses of alloxan-diabetic rabbit does and saline-injected controls. Maternal diabetes was classified as severe or mild determined by whether maternal blood glucose values were greater or less than 200 mg/dL, respectively, at death. Basal oxygen consumption and adipocyte diameters did not vary among groups.

Monocyte membrane lipid composition, fluidity, and insulin binding were studied in 10 previously untreated obese type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetic subjects before and 2-7 days, 1 mo, and 3 mo after glyburide therapy. A significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels occurred within 1 wk after initiation of therapy in all subjects. Serum insulin levels did not change significantly.

We have studied the effects of supervised caloric restriction and exercise on mononuclear leukocyte lipid composition, membrane fluidity, and insulin receptors in ten nondiabetic obese adults, (175 +/- 9.3% of ideal body weight) and ten normal adult subjects. Fasting leads to an increase in insulin binding to isolated rat hepatocytes from 12 to 17%. This increase was accounted for by changes in the affinity of insulin receptors without alteration in their number. The effect of informational feedback on the protein and caloric consumption of burn patients was investigated using a multiple-baseline across subjects. The patients were four severely burned adult males who failed to consume sufficient foods to achieve prescribed levels of protein or kilocalories via standard burn unit procedures during recovery. Feedback consisted of informing patients of (a) their prescribed levels of protein and kilocalories, (b) the protein and kilocalorie content of hospital foods and beverages, and (c) their actual intake of protein and kilocalories.

We studied 125I-insulin binding to monocytes and plasma levels of two trophoblastic proteins from 38 pregnant patients with varying degrees of carbohydrate intolerance, including 10 pregnant controls (PC), 17 Class A diabetics (A), 6 Class B diabetics - prior to insulin therapy (B-noRx) and 5 different Class B diabetics studied 1-6 weeks following initiation of insulin therapy (B-Rx). All studies were performed in the second half of pregnancy. In comparison to six age- and weight-matched nonpregnant controls (NPC), insulin binding to monocytes was somewhat higher in both PC and A.

This research was conducted to determine if there were significant differences in the vitamin A content of two enteral feeding solutions following timed exposure to a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) enteral tube feeding system. This study took place in the laboratory setting with procedures designed to simulate clinical conditions with respect to rate of flow and time of exposure. Feeding solutions (Ensure Osmolite and Vivonex High Nitrogen) were sampled, placed in PVC feeding system pouches (Vivonex Delivery System, Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceuticals, Norwich, NY) and permitted to drip from the pouches at a constant rate.
