Recommendations of the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology for the Treatment of Neoplastic Pericardial Effusion.

This document presents guidelines to assist surgeons in the diagnosis and management of this condition, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach. Recommendations described by a group of physicians members of the Brazilian Society of Oncological Surgery regarding the treatment of neoplastic pericardial effusion, developed to guide oncological surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons and general surgeons in their clinical practice. Members of the Thoracic Neoplasms Committee carried out a literature review and discussion among expert peers to create a guideline that would help in managing this very serious clinical condition in our oncology practice: Neoplastic pericardial effusion.

NEARER SCAN (LENO BESIK) evaluation of a task-sharing echocardiographic active case finding programme for rheumatic heart disease in Australia and Timor-Leste: protocol for a hybrid type II effectiveness-implementation study.

Introduction: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is underdiagnosed globally resulting in missed treatment opportunities and adverse clinical outcomes. We describe the protocol for a study which aims to co-design, implement and conduct an evaluation of a task-sharing approach to echocardiographic active case finding for early detection and management of RHD in high-risk settings in Australia and Timor-Leste.

Methods And Analysis: Echocardiograms will be obtained by trained local staff using hand-held echocardiographic devices employing the 'Single Parasternal Long Axis view with a Sweep of the Heart' (SPLASH) technique and interpreted by experts remote from the site of acquisition.

Cellular communication network factor 2 regulates smooth muscle cell transdifferentiation and lipid accumulation in atherosclerosis.

Aims: Accruing evidence illustrates an emerging paradigm of dynamic vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) transdifferentiation during atherosclerosis progression. However, the molecular regulators that govern SMC phenotype diversification remain poorly defined. This study aims to elucidate the functional role and underlying mechanisms of cellular communication network factor 2 (CCN2), a matricellular protein, in regulating SMC plasticity in the context of atherosclerosis.

Effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment associated with transcranial direct current stimulation in individuals with chronic low back pain: A double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) associated with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in reducing pain, disability, and improving quality of life in participants with non-specific chronic low back pain.

Design: A randomised double-blind clinical trial.

Hematology and Serum Biochemistry of Coastal Seabirds Rehabilitated on the Southeastern and Southern Coast of Brazil.

Complete blood counts (n=566) and serum biochemistry (n=426) were assessed in seven coastal seabirds species that underwent rehabilitation along the southeastern and southern coast of Brazil from Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro State (22°56'16.44″S, 42°18'24.16″W) to Laguna, Santa Catarina State (28°29'43″S, 48°45'39.

Effects of Supplementing Milk Replacer with Sodium Butyrate on Dairy Calves.

Diarrhea and respiratory diseases pose significant challenges in the rearing of pre-weaned calves, motivating the investigation of tools to improve gastrointestinal tract development, health, and overall performance in young calves. Consequently, the primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an additive incorporated into milk replacer to promote the development and health of the animals. Forty-six dairy calves were randomly assigned into two treatments: control (CON, = 23; with 15 females and 8 males), and sodium butyrate (SB, = 23; with 15 females and 8 males).

Use of homologous platelet gel to manage refractory diabetic lower extremity ulcers: additional experience at a tertiary hospital.

Background: DLEUs are a major cause of morbidity. Appropriate treatment is essential, and newer methods to achieve ulcer healing have been described, including application of PG.

Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of homologous PG in patients with chronic noninfected DLEU refractory to standard treatment as well as possible correlations between patient comorbidities and response to treatment.

Scoping review: Effect of surface treatments on bond strength of resin composite repair.

Objective: to evaluate the existing evidence on surface treatment techniques employed in resin composite repair and their effect on the repair short- and long-term bond strength.

Data And Source: This scoping review was performed under the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for scoping reviews and registered on the Open Science Framework platform.

Study Selection: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus and grey literature up to September 2022 without language or date restriction.

Congenital morphological patterns of myocardial bridges.

Background: Myocardial bridging (MB) is a coronary anomaly in which a segment of the coronary artery is overlapped by a layer of myocardial tissue. Nowadays, there is no scientific agreement on if the MB are congenital or acquired or on the factors that determine their presence and/or absence.

Objective: This study is performed to analyze the anatomical characteristics of adult and children's hearts regarding the shape of the left coronary artery branching, presence of pre-bridge arterial branch, coronary dominance and its correlations to MB formation.

A brazilian nationwide multicenter study on deficiency of deaminase-2 (DADA2).

Introduction: The deficiency of ADA2 (DADA2) is a rare autoinflammatory disease provoked by mutations in the ADA2 gene inherited in a recessive fashion. Up to this moment there is no consensus for the treatment of DADA2 and anti-TNF is the therapy of choice for chronic management whereas bone marrow transplantation is considered for refractory or severe phenotypes. Data from Brazil is scarce and this multicentric study reports 18 patients with DADA2 from Brazil.

Food-related substrate preference in juveniles seastar Echinaster (Othilia) brasiliensis (Müller & Troschel,1842) in captivity.

There are only a few studies that describe the larval development of Echinaster or aspects on culture systems for the genus. For starfishes, the choice of suitable substrates has received special attention since it could influence the acid-base balance of the water, movement capacity and predation rate. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ideal food-related substrate for the rearing of juvenile Echinaster brasiliensis.

Physiotherapeutic approach to the preoperative period for the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A systematic review.

Introduction: The tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common type of knee injury. Current evidence show that there are specific predictors for postoperative success in ACL injuries, but there is a limited number of studies on preoperative rehabilitation. Therefore, the goals of this review were to emphasize physiotherapy approaches to the preoperative period and to verify its effectiveness at the time the athlete returns to sport.

Determination of the lactose content in low-lactose milk using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and convolutional neural network.

Demand for low lactose milk and milk products has been increasing worldwide due to the high number of people with lactose intolerance. These low lactose dairy foods require fast, low-cost and efficient methods for sugar quantification. However, available methods do not meet all these requirements.

The influence of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation on the evolution of diabetic foot lesions and peripheral arterial disease.

Purpose: Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) remains the best treatment option in patients with type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney failure. There are only a few studies addressing the potential ischemic deterioration of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) due to blood diverting from the iliac artery to the kidney graft. We aimed to evaluate diabetic foot lesions and PAD evolution in SPKT recipients and investigate if they are more frequent in ipsilateral lower limb of kidney graft.

A machine learning proposal method to detect milk tainted with cheese whey.

Cheese whey addition to milk is a type of fraud with high prevalence and severe economic effects, resulting in low yield for dairy products, nutritional reduction of milk and milk-derived products, and even some safety concerns. Nevertheless, methods to detect fraudulent addition of cheese whey to milk are expensive and time consuming, and are thus ineffective as screening methods. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy technique is a promising alternative to identify this type of fraud because a large number of data are generated, and useful information might be extracted to be used by machine learning models.

Despite the numerous known edible fruits in the world, consumption by humans is most often restricted to a few dozen of them.

True neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: late outcomes from a surgical series.

Background: True neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (TNTOS) is rare, and evaluation of surgical treatment is limited to a few studies in the literature. The purpose of this study is to present the results from a surgical series of 21 patients with TNTOS.

Methods: Retrospective analysis on 21 patients diagnosed with TNTOS who underwent surgery.

Effect of Photobiomodulation on Denervation-Induced Skeletal Muscle Atrophy and Autophagy: A Study in Mice.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether photobiomodulation (PBM) can protect against and attenuate muscle atrophy owing to complete peripheral nerve lesion in mice by acting on autophagy.

Methods: C57BL/10 mice underwent right sciatic nerve transection to induce tibialis anterior muscle atrophy. After 6 hours of denervation, the mice received PBM (wavelength, 830 nm) daily, transcutaneously over the tibialis anterior muscle region for 5 or 14 days.

Urticaria and angioedema in children and adolescents: diagnostic challenge.

Urticaria diagnosis may be challenging in children since it can be triggered or related to numerous conditions. In this paper, we reviewed the main aspects regarding the diagnosis of urticaria in the pediatric population. Acute urticaria is often due to viral infections.

External validation of Villalta score in high-middle income country patients with deep vein thrombosis.

Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a late complication that does not have a cure yet, with a prevalence estimated between 20 to 75%, associated with previous deep vein thrombosis event. Although the Villalta score (VS) is the gold-standard clinical tool for diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of PTS, there are currently no VS intra-rater agreement established and no validation studies for VS' application into Brazilian Portuguese. We sought to translate and validate VS reliability systematically; and, secondarily, to compare the ultrasound findings with the severity of PTS.
