Purpose: The purpose is to analyze the possible correlation between expression and activation of the high-affinity nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor TrkA, cell cycle protein expression, and disease outcome in serous ovarian carcinoma. In addition, we wished to study the possible link between expression of NGF, a novel angiogenic factor and its receptor TrkA, and the expression of factors involved in angiogenesis in effusions and solid tumors.
Experimental Design: Sections from 80 malignant effusions and 65 corresponding solid tumors were evaluated for protein expression of NGF, TrkA, and phospho-TrkA (p-TrkA).
Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the occurrence of CD44 isoforms in breast carcinomas and their role in predicting clinical outcome.
Methods And Results: Shock-frozen tumour tissues from 110 patients with breast carcinoma were examined by immunohistochemistry using antibodies directed against CD44s, v5, v6, v7 and v3-10. In addition, 80 of these tumours were available for quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of CD44s and CD44v6.

The 5-year overall survival was 41%; 70% had tumor size >20 mm; 72% had metastasized to regional lymph nodes; 95% were histologic grade II or III; 66% and 75% were negative for estrogen and progesterone receptor, respectively; and c-erbB-2 expression was high (44%). BRCA1 expression was reduced in 33% of the cases.

Methods: Review of clinical and histopathologic data and follow-up information of 216 patients with clinical FIGO stage I-II disease, primarily treated by surgery from 1977-1991.
Results: Eighty-nine patients underwent radical vulvectomy with bilateral groin dissection by en bloc excision, 60 by the triple incision technique, 20 individualized vulvar surgery with uni-or bilateral groin dissection, and 47 vulvar surgery only.
Aims: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue of uncertain histogenesis that may show a biphasic (spindle and solid/glandular components) or a monophasic histological appearance. In previous studies, we demonstrated that the solid/glandular component possesses higher proliferation rates than the spindle cell component of biphasic synovial sarcomas and that the spindle cell component may exhibit a progressive transition from or to the solid-glandular component in biphasic synovial sarcoma. A moderately differentiated grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma was diagnosed in the right breast of an 81-year-old woman. The uniform nuclear profiles and moderately abundant granular cytoplasm suggested a neuroendocrine tumour and a Grimelius stain was positive.
