Since their inception, plastics have become indispensable materials. However, plastics used for extended periods in industrial applications are prone to aging, which negatively impacts their material behavior and performance. To ensure the long-term usability of these materials, they must be tested in real-time, in-service environments to assess degradation.

In the industry sector, it is very common to have different types of dissimilar materials on the same construction rather than products made from a single type of material. Traditional methods (welding, mechanical fastening, and adhesive bonding) and hybrid techniques (friction stir welding, weld bonding, and laser welding) are used in the assembly or joining of these materials. However, while joining similar types of materials is relatively easy, the process becomes more challenging when joining dissimilar materials due to the structure and properties of the materials involved.

Parts produced using a 3D printer are combined with friction stir welding (FSW). In the FSW processing of parts with a low infill ratio, welding errors occur due to a lack of material. In this study, plates were created using two different-colored PLA Plus filaments with different infill ratios in the weld area (20%, 60%, and 100%).

Joining dissimilar materials is important in engineering studies to reduce costs, lighten structures, and take advantage of the superior properties of the materials. However, the different chemical compositions, physical, and mechanical properties of dissimilar materials make the joining process difficult. To overcome the limitations of traditional joining techniques, there is an increasing interest towards innovative welding methods such as ultrasonic welding, laser welding, friction stir welding, and so on.
