  • Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in young adulthood affects the risk of chronic diseases, prompting a study on how changes in 2.4 km run times relate to health outcomes in healthy young men.
  • An analysis of data from 148,825 men ages 18-34 indicated that poor run time performance was linked to a higher risk of major cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality later in life.
  • The study concluded that a decline in run times over time correlates with an increased risk of cardiovascular issues, suggesting that improving fitness could be a potential modifiable risk factor for long-term health.

Background: The utility of large language model-based (LLM) artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in many aspects of healthcare is becoming apparent though their ability to address patient concerns remains unknown. We sought to evaluate the performance of two well-known, freely-accessible chatbots, ChatGPT and Google Bard, in responding to common questions about stroke rehabilitation posed by patients and their caregivers.

Methods: We collected questions from outpatients and their caregivers through a survey, categorised them by theme, and created representative questions to be posed to both chatbots.

Ischemic stroke patients with thrombophilia and patient foramen ovale (PFO) may have an increased risk of recurrent stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA), and may benefit from PFO closure. However, screening for thrombophilia is not routinely performed and the impact of thrombophilia on prognosis after PFO closure is uncertain. We aim to compare the risk of recurrent stroke and TIA after PFO closure in patients with thrombophilia versus those without.

A 30-yr-old patient with Becker muscular dystrophy presented with stroke. Background issues of proximal weakness, dilated cardiomyopathy, and reduced endurance challenged the usual goal-setting and formulation of a stroke rehabilitation plan. We discuss the holistic rehabilitation program that this patient underwent, with a focus on the utilization of robot-assisted gait training that eventually led him to successfully regain mobility.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether tracking changes in liver stiffness measurements (LSM) over time can better predict liver-related events (LRE) in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) compared to just looking at the most recent LSM.
  • Analyzing data from 480 patients across five countries, researchers found that while a higher current LSM was linked to a higher risk of LRE, changes in LSM over time were not significantly predictive.
  • The conclusion is that once the latest LSM value is available, previous LSM measurements do not provide any additional predictive benefit for LRE in cACLD patients.

Our skin is constantly exposed to blue light (BL), which is abundant in sunlight and emitted by digital devices. Prolonged exposure to BL can lead to oxidative stress-induced damages and skin hyperpigmentation. For this study, we used a cell line-based model to examine the protective effects of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) on BL-induced oxidative stress and hyperpigmentation in B16-F1 melanocytes.

Adult weight management (AWM) clinic at our tertiary institution is a clinical service run for overweight or obese adult women, who are also under the care of gynaecologists for subfertility or menstrual irregularities. Unfortunately, the appointment waiting days for the first consultation at AWM clinic were long, which affected the timeliness of care given to our patients. We suspect that the referred patients are more likely to forget or lose motivation during the long waiting days, resulting in higher non-attendance rates.

A "chemical linearization" approach was applied to synthetic peptide macrocycles to enable their de novo sequencing from mixtures using nanoliquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-MS/MS). This approach─previously applied to individual macrocycles but not to mixtures─involves cleavage of the peptide backbone at a defined position to give a product capable of generating sequence-determining fragment ions. Here, we first established the compatibility of "chemical linearization" by Edman degradation with a prominent macrocycle scaffold based on -Cys peptides cross-linked with the -xylene linker, which are of major significance in therapeutics discovery.
