Objective: Despite the clinical similarities triple-negative and basal-like breast cancer are not synonymous. Indeed, not all basal-like cancers are negative for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and HER2 expression while triple-negative also encompasses other cancer types. P53 protein appears heterogeneously expressed in triple-negative breast cancers, suggesting that it may be associated with specific biological subgroups with a different outcome.

Background: in primary breast cancers dichotomic classification of E-cadherin expression, according to an arbitrary cutoff, may be inadequate and lead to loss of prognostic significance or contrasting prognostic indications. We aimed to assess the prognostic value of high and low E-cadherin levels in a consecutive case series (204 cases) of unilateral node-negative non-lobular breast cancer patients with a 8-year median follow-up and that did not receive any adjuvant therapy after surgery.

90K (Mac-2 BP) expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in paraffin-embedded tissue from a consecutive series of lymph-node negative breast cancer patients who did not receive adjuvant systemic treatment. Background: In this study, the authors conducted a comparative quantitative evaluation of the proliferation markers ProEx C (an aberrant S-phase induction marker, human papillomavirus E6-E7 correlated) and MIB-1 in squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) to identify a biomolecular profile informative for the diagnosis of high-grade SIL/cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3 or greater that was complementary to the morphologic Papanicolaou (Pap) test ("biomolecular Pap test").

Methods: After the cytologic diagnosis, reflex immunocytochemistry was carried out on 76 unstained SurePath cell samples (20 routine samples that were negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy and 56 positive samples that were selected with matching histology). Chromosome 11p15 deletion is frequent in human tumors, suggesting the presence of at least one tumor suppressor gene within this region. While mutation analyses of local genes revealed only rare mutations, we have previously described a mechanism, gain of imprinting, that leads to loss of expression of genes located on the maternal 11p15 chromosome in human hepatocarcinomas. Loss of expression was often associated with loss of maternal-specific methylation at the KvDMR1 locus.

Background: The widespread use of diagnostic breast imaging has yielded an increase in the detection of in situ, microinvasive, and small invasive carcinomas and has provided opportunities to study the earliest stages of breast carcinoma development. The tumor-derived antigen 90K (Mac-2 BP) is a widely expressed, secreted glycoprotein found in the serum of healthy individuals and at elevated levels in the serum of patients with breast cancer and other types of cancer. Aims And Background: Several simple molecular abnormalities have been detected in bronchial preneoplastic lesions, but the simultaneous presence of these alterations has been scarcely investigated.

Methods: We studied, by an immunohistochemical method, the expression of p53, Rb, Ras and Bcl-2 in 65 samples from surgical specimens and diagnostic biopsies selected for the presence of preneoplastic changes in the bronchial epithelium. To perform an analysis of the combined expression of all markers in the same areas, we accurately mapped every consecutive section on which immunohistochemical reactions were performed, subdividing each specimen into 25x microscopic fields, which allowed good topographical mapping.

In 50 in situ breast cancers an immunohistochemical study, evaluating estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors, Proliferation Index (PI), c-erbB-2/Neu and p53 expression was performed. Background: Mortality data have clearly highlighted the province of Ferrara as an area with a particular distribution of tumors strictly related with environmental factors.

Methods: The project of a tumor registry has been planned for a better description of cancer incidence and for a deeper insight into etiologic factors, considering the typical features of the province from geographic and occupational points of view.
